Hi Nicole, I love watching your videos - thank you! I’m looking for some inspiration for my hallway. I’m based in the UK and love the “modern rustic” style. I want the space to feel warm and inviting, with neutral tones and a bold stair runner to add contrast. The hallway is west-facing and gets good light from the windows by the front door, and the layout is similar to a Victorian hallway. I need help with paint colours and where to use them (wood trim, skirting, panelling, ceiling, and walls). I’d like to keep the doors and stair handrail as they are and plan to add half-wall wainscoting. I’m leaning toward striped stair runners and have samples from Roger Oates (Sudbury, Cranborne Lichen, and Morella Emerald), but I’m open to other ideas. We love green but already have two green rooms, so we’d prefer not to paint the hallway green-perhaps something with a green undertone to complement the runner? I’m also considering a vintage-style mirror on the long wall facing the front door and a rustic console table, possibly in black. For reference, we have neutral oak vinyl flooring with sandy and brown tones, oak panel doors, and a simple oak handrail with chrome spindles. If possible, I’d love specific paint suggestions (brand and colours). Thanks again for your videos/blogs and any suggestions you can offer! X

Good morning, thank you so much! Sounds like a gorgeous vision in mind :) If you are doing half wall panelling, I would use the same colour on the panelling as you are on the skirting, if you introduce another colour on the skirting you end up segmenting the walls, and making the hallway feel shorter. I would personally use the same colour on the upper half of the walls and the ceilings so again, you aren't segmenting colour and your eyes will be drawn straight up to the ceiling. Based on the scheme, I would go for a warm neutral and a lighter tone on top of the panelling and instead use a green tone either on the mirror you choose or decor to tie this into the stair runner, you only need something small to match so the colour feels intentional. Alternatively, go for a moodier, darker look with a greige colour on the panelling so you have that tone of green. In terms of colours, here are some suggestions; Panelling colours - Dulux Natural Hessian, Egyptian Cotton or Gentle Fawn with Moon Shimmer above and ceiling or Frosted Dawn, both Dulux (this actually has a light green undertone to it) Farrow and Ball - Panelling - Skimming Stone, Blue Gray (if you want a light green tone and adds definition to lower half, Shadow Gray - and whites above and onto ceiling - All White. Wimborne White. Wevet. I'd also look at Coat paints, this have some great colours in their range. Hope that helps, there is honestly so many to choose from so totally depends what you are leaning towards but happy to send some more recs on here if needed, I'd also get a tester pot beforehand so you can see how it works in your specific light conditions, Nicole x

Hi Nicole, I have watched sooo many videos about paint colurs but you are the first one to mention about which direction a room faces being important. I have inherited a very expensive carpet in the lounge which is a strong mid blue with a hint of grey The south/west facing room is very light and sunny. All the connecting floors are natural pale oak. I am stuck. I was raised with Magnolia so really dislike cream paint in all its shades, especially pinky/yellow based creams. I am leaning towards a pale taupe, but do I go warm or cool? Please help? Thank you

Hey! Absolutely and I totally get the dislike for magnolia type paints, I would stick with a warmer taupe if the carpet takes up a large proportion of the room as it may feel too cold else. If not, go for something cooler and you can bring some warmth in with an area rug and decor. Hope that helps and happy decorating!

I have a really dark hallway with practically no light. I have the colour elephants breath in my living room and really want it to flow through, but i think if i carry it, though, it will be too dark.what colour would you suggest.

Morning, yes elephants breath will likely be too dark, especially if you have a dark hallway, it's going to make those darker corners appear even darker. If your living room is not open plan, I would stick with the elephant's breath if you like it, you get greater depth and visual interest with the contrast in colours. I'd look at a yellow, red or pink based white for your hallway such as Wimborne white. However, something like Skimming Stone has warm grey undertones so would complement the elephant's breath perfectly. I'd grab a couple of testers and try them on an A4 sheet of paper so you can move them around and see how they look during different levels of light during the day.

Great video. Thank you. The tiny entrance in our flat has no natural light. If I paint the wall in Almond White, would you suggest that I should paint the woodwork and the doors in the same colour? Also, the tiles in our bathroom with a tiny window are light beige, Is Almond white a good colour to go for? Thank You

Thanks for watching! Yes - if it's a small space, best to keep the colour consistent on woodwork - you could paint the doors a lighter colour for a soft contrast though if you like. We did this in our hallway with a light sage green which worked really well. Almond White is a great versatile shade so will work will in a bathroom with beige tiles, just introduce some pops of colour through decor to lift the scheme, hope that helps!

great video some good ideas, what accent colour would go with almond white in a hallway, what colour for example can i paint the bannisters with when using almond white? i dont mind a little colour on the bannisters but dont know which one?

Thanks! I would tend to go for something at least two shades darker so it can be quite subtle but brings definition, alternatively, go for something like a sage or olive green, of if you want more drama, go for a black on the bannister. Here are some colour suggestions that would pair well; Willow Tree, Overtly Olive, Jurassic Stone, Pebble Shore, Basically Black. Grab a tester beforehand and paint and A4 sheet of paper so you can see how it looks in the light your hallway receives, hope that helps!

Oh really? Cotton white has yellow undertones so definitely doesn't, of course it depends what light people are viewing it in, orientation of room. Timeless has stronger yellow undertones than Cotton White - get a tester of each to be sure, paint a swatch on an A4 piece of paper and stick to your wall, it will allow you to see how both colours look as the light changes throughout the day.

We painted our north facing room white cotton and it does have hints of grey/blue. In the evenings it almost looks baby blue
