The metal piece in the eye of a hatchet or axe is called an axe wedge. They aren't normally installed until after the axe head starts to loosen with time and use (provided the tool was high quality in the first place). They are used to tighten up the fit between the handle and head of the axe or hatchet, making up for wood shrinkage and wear. I would actually be suspicious of an axe or hatchet that came new with an axe wedge because it means the handle was not properly fitted to the head in the first place and is using the wedge to fill in where there should have been wood. In addition, if a wedge is already in place, it makes it much more difficult to install an additional wedge, if the head does start to loosen over time or with constant use.

You and I have a similar outlook of the very near future. I have been preparing my family accordingly and Gränsfors Bruk, Hults Bruk, Helkowerk, Silky, Boreal 21s and Falkniven all have their place in that.

You got something wrong. The reason for using the brass rivets is that the steel of the axe will not dull at all if you touch it against brass, it's way softer than steel. It also offers greater protection than aftermarket sheath and the reason is obvious, you can easily cut through stitching and leather but the edge will stop when pressed against brass. I would never switch to a stitched leather sheath, it's way more dangerous.

Congratulations…my husband took down several 10” to 12” trees in the back yard with that same axe…I thought he was nuts but the axe did the job…..now he’s got at least 4 Gransford Brux axes….he loves them all….

I have three GB axes - Small Forest Axe, Scandinavian Forest axe and the Wildlife Hatchet. The only thing that I do not like is the thin linseed oil finish that came on my Wildlife Hatchet. I have changed that. It now has several coats of linseed oil on it. I will build it up with about five thin coats of Linsheen. My small Forest Axe has ten coats, my Scandinavian Forest Axe has five coats. You can limit the hatchet cutting your mask by coat in the mask, inside and out with linseed oil.

I also look forward to the future field tested review after you put a few months of work on it :-)

They should have modified the sheath, not the steel! I don’t understand why many of the GB hatchets sort of “droop” downward.

Very nice gift :) I sometimes compare for so long that when I make a decision, the item is gone. haha. Do you watch Dutch Bushcraft Knives? They review a lot of knives for heavy outdoor use, and are very amusing as well.

Any particular reason you didn't go for the small hatchet at 26 cm vs the wildlife you got at 35cm. From what I understand the head is identical otherwise.

Oh that was just a good old Stanley Hammer. Thrashed it once and then went back the next day at took another swing at it just to make sure it still had feeling… it did. Thumb is doing better, but I’m still working on my hand eye coordination.
