I like setting my hi hats so, when fully open, they are far apart so I get this splash cymbal thing when open, and regular hi hats when closed. I only have hi hats and a ride on my kit, and I’m too cheap to buy more cymbals and stands, so I make the most with what I got.

This: i hate when people have the hi hats so far apart that you need to keep constant pressure with your foot just to get a normal hi hat sound. I don't get why people do this it's just extra work, and personally i really hate the fully open hi hat sound. It's not really used in any genre as far as i can tell, so why do it? This is the most optimal way.

I agree too. But I guess there are no rules in music though, perhaps some people love that wide open sound, and I guess depending on the hihat used, it can fit the context too. Cheers for your input! I personally find no use for fully open hihats too haha 😁🙌

If you open them more and then contract them wuickly they can give a nice ring afterwards, which is snother sound you can use. also in a jazz direction it‘s nice to get them more open, so you can create a louder closing sound. Did have it more closed like you guys before, tried it more open got used to it and now I keep it looser.

open hi hat is all over classic/modern rock - see it in pop/jazz as well. I’m not a fan of the sound either but think a crash into open high hat to a snare buzz roll and closed hi hat accented snare is a great way to glide down through the two cymbals into the snare, covering up the trashy open sound, and showing some pretty cool and fluid kit movement!

I find it's entirely dependent on what you're playing. Inserting a whole drumstick? That's way too loose! I'd never play a set like that - unless I'm doing jazz or some specific song. If I am, I'll just loosen it so that I get the effect. In general play, having the hi hat this open is way overkill.

It's personal, I'm just giving the most versatile option in this setup. If you don't open them more than a drumsticks width, you'll struggle to get properly audible splashes and foot chicks when playing the ebtire drumset together especially. And you said it yourself too, when you play jazz you willl loosen your hihats too. Well in this position, I can play all genres and get all possible sounds I need to create. Cheers for your opinion though, debate like this is great to add even more detail :)

Haha, no, but really depends what sound you like. I like to stax flexible with my hihat sound so I open it up even more, but I‘m also more jazz interested.

eh nah, depends on your foot pressure, sliding, and body weight control as you work the kit. Whatever gives you the ability to control pressure, create the sounds you need, and feels most comfortable!
