In 2005 I did this same double peak climb, but I knew I had to acclimate, so I chose to camp at Fuller Lake, the highest bivouac I've personally ever done, at 12, 500 feet asl. I went into an old abandoned mine shack (see 7:21. The shack was actually still standing back then) on the shore of the lake, and I thought I could sleep on a bench inside, out of the elements. It started blowing, and I could hear the wind coming from up above, pouring from the west over the scarp of Golden Horn and Vermillion Peak, building as it came roaring down the alpine valleys, directly into the tin-covered old shack I was trying to sleep in. The wind would then start ripping at the tin that the old shack was covered in and it was pandemonium, the worst racket you could imagine, all at over 12,000 feet in elevation when the temperature was about 25° F in the Colorado Rockies. I actually saw little mice in my headlamp, with frost blowing around, running to find a safer spot to sleep. I got very little sleep that night, to say the least, but the next morning I summited Fuller Peak, then Vermillion, and then I decided to move camp back down to treeline before climbing Golden Horn the next morning. That night I got visited by a bear, but I turned on my headlamp and it ran away. Golden Horn is amazing, it makes you feel like you are floating out above the landscape below you, as it has an overhanging summit block about the size of a skyscraper.

Your videos are the best of the best that shows the beauty of the San Juan mountains. Just be sure you watch them in 4k. My KZbin app first presented this video in 480p. We just returned from our yearly trip to Ouray and the San Juan's. Our 9th year in a row. My serious hiking days are over and now consist of a few hundred yards from the Jeep. But I still return with some great memories and videos from the area. I have been playing with 360 videos lately and have a few on my channel. As this video shows this was a fantastic year for wildflowers. Keep up the great work and I will keep watching!

Big Thanks Lynn, I very much appreciate your comments and encouragement. Every time I drive through Montrose I think of how I need to stop by and meet you. I know we have a bunch in common. Would you reply with your email? if you're comfortable with that. As the season winds down I am planning to check out some of the MTB trails in your area, especially Sidewinder! I ride lots and the reason I have not been quite as active on the Tube. Anyway, hope all is well with you Brother, Cheers Karl

Karl, I love your videos man. I was just backpacking in ice lake basin a few weeks ago with my friend hoping to summit the golden horn, but the weather didn’t let us. Have you ever heard of Avery Peak near Crested Butte? I just climbed the face of it a couple days ago and it was the coolest adventure I’ve ever been on, reminded me exactly of something you’d enjoy. It’s a super solid sustained class 4 slab climb up an absolutely beautiful 12er. I’ve never climbed any of the flatirons but it looks very comparable. It was perfect to do in climbing shoes, wouldn’t have been as fun with hiking shoes on.

While this was lovely, it doesn't reflect the reality that this place is being completely overrun by inconsiderate hikers and campers. This video will only serve to exacerbate the resource damage being done in this sensitive environment. A permit system is inevitable.
@KarlDeckerPresents
@KarlDeckerPresents Ай бұрын
@@rustyshackle917 welcome to planet earth my friend! While that is a reality, I do think anyone who hikes 2000 vertical feet to visit has earned admisión, unlike those milling around 300 yards from the parking lot and camping permits would help insure responsible people are the ones spending the night. I have been told permits are coming as well. When I first researched this area I heard rumors of the damage you are referring to but honestly both times I’ve visited it appeared to be in great shape, not sure but my hope is that the area is so stunning people are stating to give a #%*#. And getting on those who do not. . . Both nights I was in the area I ended up camping beside really cool solo people like myself and there was plenty of space and very few campers. . . Sadly, this truly is the plight of our planet and I would argue that by FAR the biggest culprits to public land would be profiteers damaging huge areas, general irresponsible resource consumption, especially fossil fuels (that may wipe us out rather soon) and shrinking EPA protections. I do think any tax paying American willing to do the work has the right to visit their national treasures if done so responsibly. My personal solution would be more education and responsible human reproduction. . . I often wish things were like they were 20years ago but, it‘s a one way ticket, enjoy the ride and imagine a world with no KZbin! We’ll have to take the good with the bad. .
