Lived back in Waimanu Valley in 1975 for 3 months. No people, no permits, no restrooms. Great times, body surf and hike all day. Plenty coconut, wild papaya, wild banana, little shrimps in the stream. Hunters shot a boar and we had buried, steamed pig.

Having done this hike, by bad luck it took me three attempts. Twice I tried the hike, but the Waipio river had high water, a bummer considering I am from Pennsylvania. The third time I made I across and did the hike. Waimanu is nice. Quite a few wild boar. Great swimming in the plunge pool of the waterfalls.

The road is currently closed to anyone other than residents of the valley. The road is going to be completely redone for safety reasons. No walking down it either. It's going to be closed for years. Believe it or not my friends and I used to ride our mountain bikes down that road to the very back of the valley and then ride back up no stopping. 4wds would stop just to watch us. That was back in the 90s. Too many vehicles these days to do it safely.

@@rjs848 oh sorry here is the current text on the Hawaii Permit site. Waipi‘o Valley Access Road (only access to the trailhead) is RESTRICTED only to Hawai‘i Island Residents, riding in vehicles. Due to the unsafe conditions of the Waipi‘o Valley Access Road (which leads to the Muliwai trailhead), the County of Hawai‘i Public Works Department has closed the road to all users except local traffic. Hi Toby! Great video! I loved your one about Kalalau which I watched several times before completing it in June of this year. What a hike of a lifetime! For this one, would microspikes help for the hike down? How many days would you recommend staying & finally how hard is ir to get the permit?
@TobyVisuals808
@TobyVisuals808 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Kathy. I am glad to hear you had a great trip on the Kalalau Trail. Microspikes may help especially when it is wet. When I went it was totally dry, sandy, rocky and slippery. Just take your time on the way down and you will be fine. I would recommend at least 2 days at Waimanu so on your second day you can visit Wai’ilikahi Fall. Spectacular! I just looked at the reservation system. Definitely easier than Kalalau. Campsite #2 would be my recommendation. I am actually standing at #2 when talking about the hike. One more thing, I had perfect cell coverage just before dropping down into Waimanu. Enjoy your trip, make sure to check the weather forecast especially this time a year. Enjoy!
