I forgot to mention that US companies in the same industry are trading around 25x earnings or more with less growth, the US infrastructure trade is hot but the CA one isn't yet.

I'm Canadian and housing has been out of control for 2 decades. They can't fix the problem because of a combination of red tape and increasing unaffordability. The weighting of the housing industry as a percentage of GDP is more than double that of the U.S. ...most families can't afford a new single family home so the move is towards condo ownership in larger centers.

I have been looking in the Canadian housing sector, construction, re. Most are still overvalued esp. when you price in the risks and cyclicality. Historically speaking, Bird Construction has been poorly managed. Have you looked into their management track record? They miss uptrends and downtrends which led to shareholder capital destruction (reminds me of INTC), failed to report as per regulatory requirements, misallocated capital, legal case for misleading investors in their 'renewable' segment, etc. Do you know any other stocks aside from BDT? I am interested at other stocks.

Has been, but the management has changed, if you look at the last 3 years , they pivoted and the business is much better managed, people still have your thesis which is why it's trading at 10x, it will get a multiple expansion once people believe the company has changed

I live in Canada and I would be careful about touching ANYTHING to do with real estate or housing until at least 2027, just a fair warning.

@@thepatientinvestor9580 What other Canadian stocks do you own aside from decisive and BDT? I do own decisive dividend for quite some time.. But I am passing on BDT. I know the management quite well and even if they have 'good' management, they deserve a low multiple because of the cyclicality, single digit gross margins (I own construction company that has 20% gross margins, taking market share and better valuation) and inefficiencies. Would be nice if you could do a video on other Canadian stocks that you own.

If construction of housing is up, then you must expect a lot of buying in the coming years so how about mortgage insurance companies? Specifically, PMI companies since they're required and downside protection can exist with reinsurance.

It depends on what you're buying, builders that buy and hold the homes for sale or construction companies that build the homes for the developer

Housing starts have been holding up pretty well in the US too, btw. Not trying to bash on your thesis, just some devil's advocate conversation starter with the community... You're a seasoned investor, I don't have to tell you that haha

The housing sector will do well in Canada. The questions that I have are the following: 1. How long will the boom last? 2. Why (or how) would any particular construction company achieve a competitive advantage and capture all the surpluss?

That's an easy answer, for the boom, I think it will last until 2030, especially for construction companies like bird that are involved in the net zero transition which is a goal for Canada to achieve by 2030, but the main competitive advantage there is labor , they lack skilled labor , if you have skilled labor in a specialty industry and some automation to lower cost, you have a competitive advantage

It depends on the company that you're investing in, Canada has a problem with skilled labor if the company you own has skilled labor or has automation which allows them to lower cost it has an advantage

Thier debt is a bit high, but that could be a tailwind if the interests start to decline. Yeah! nobody is talking about that, this stock just went from 10 to 23 dollars in 5-6 months but the Canada housing trend is a secret! 🤣🤣 Just like AI also the graphs you showed are already priced in, I don't know if this is the peak or multiples will expand furhter, but for sure the timing is very risky now.

It is a secret because the stock is trading at 10x earnings growing 100% and its comparables in the us are growing less trading at 35x , so what you said might not be so funny, thanks

@@thepatientinvestor9580 yes but this 100% earning growth is a special supply/demand situation, it cannot be forever, so the market cannot price 35X a one shot 100% growth, it would be crazy. I'm not saying this is the peak, of course I don't know if this will go up or down, but these premises don't have a favorable risk/reward to me after this huge run

Interesting points, Hope you're right. 76% of Canadians mortgages are due for renewal in the next couple of years and they're going to be at higher rates. Things here are already very stretched.
