Shoutout to everyone chasing the dream. Since last year I've cleaned up my act, living more frugally and am halfway towards the deposit I need to buy my first house. I know some people have billions and can invest in amazing watches but for me to stop renting is a huge deal and I'm very proud of myself because I know I can get there. Don't let this fool you, watches are almost never a good means of investment outside of a small handful of models that increased in value because of marketing. Consider that if you buy a watch as an investment, you can't use it, meaning you can't enjoy it. Plus, watches require servicing and care. It's easy for Michael and the store owners to hold them, but they're highly educated on the subject and enjoy/do it professionally. Plus, Michael is friends with store owners that will sell it to him for a fair price. In reality, you will be very hard pressed to find non-shady dealers who will sell you without a high premium.

Well, yes and no, in those 20 years you had the opportunity to wear and enjoy the watch, and then still sell it for the same amount of money you bought it for. Objectively, due to inflation the watch technically did lose in value, but subjectively you won’t feel this as you got to wear it, and still sold it for the same amount of money.

Seth is also completely disregarding inflation and repair costs... "This watch was 4K 20 years ago, and it's 4K today, so it retains it's value" which is a completely bullshit statement. Inflation causes money to lose value over time, meaning that 4K watch would today be priced at around 6K since the dollar has lost value and normal items have become more expensive.

It's not really an investment, but it's not a loss, that's what's so special about these watches. Most luxury items lose value over the years. 99% of cars, forget about it, terrible investments. As opposed to just putting the money in the bank, you can always wear the watch and enjoy it.

Investments as in "what can I sell immediately for a quick buck." I'm sure most of Michael's collection is worth less than half of what he paid for it. But, that's not really the reason why he buys them.

"Investment" isnt being used in this case as we normally think of investments. The rich only need to not take losses on items to maintain wealth. If everything I have ever purchased could now be sold for break even, I would be in pretty good shape. They would have been good, actually MUCH BETTER investments than I made.

For a reason. I'm an Omega guy and it's awesome that the brand is now back with full vengeance offering insane watches at a great price. Imo Omega watches are better than Rolex in terms of design and quality (within the same price bracket). But in terms of resale value, ALL Omegas will lose money. This is why some people like Seth won't bother with Omega.

If you want to speculate on the low end you can do so with Seiko right now, SARB, Alpinist, and SKX line all discontinued and the prices are going up. So for sub $500 you can still have fun and play the game at that level.

If you save $200 a month for 3 years you can afford a submariner. It's just a matter of opportunity cost. You have to decide in life where you want your money to go, but realistically anyone with spending discipline can save up to buy a Rolex.

3500 bucks in 1999 dollars is equal to $5400 in 2019. So yes that particular watch did grow in value. Watches however are not a good investment if you are looking to make money. You would have been better off buying 3500 dollars worth of coca cola stock at 30 bucks a share in 1999 and having it worth 54 dollars a share today, plus the added bonus of 20 years of quarterly dividends.

Geeze.... 15 years ago, spent 3400 on buying amazon or google stocks, your worth is millions now. And it beat inflations. Or 20 years ago, buy a house and you are up 5 fold+. Or just plain buying gold.... Almost baseball cards may beat the returns of these watches.

Hi Michael it’s Paul from Melbourne Australia, just went to a Rolex and other brands dealer in new and used watches, a used with box and papers never worn 2022 Rolex submariner the shop is asking $35,000 Australian dollars. My jaw dropped. That’s $26,038 USD, Brand new on is just under $13,000 Australian and just under $10,000 USD. My life dream is a Rolex watch. Love yours and Adams work.

It's funny they said "Not about the money...Which one would you recommend?" then talks about which will go up in price/loose a penny over time.. But not the actually reason which is the prettiest, looks the best, performs the best in a long time etc. that kind of questions. It doesn't seem like they buy it for the watch and use itself, more, which watch do i buy to either invest in it, or loose the least money with.

Anyone will tell you that buying watches as investment pieces is a poor idea. Very few brands or watches ever gain meaningful value over time beyond Rolex. Unfortunately, the industry is saturated with flippers who'll buy a watch for the sole intention of immediately selling it for a profit.
