Frank Vignola recently told me that teaching jazz is like leading a horse to the water, but you can't make it drink. Jazz is hard to learn by yourself, but having guidance from many people, and being inquisitive has taught me a lot.

The Chang Method is by far the best! (I’m being a little silly, but seriously, these video are great. A teacher with context awareness, who can shift to meet each student where they are at, is by far an excellent place to come from.) Thanks Dennis for all the great videos:-)

"The best method is the one that you create for yourself by getting to know yourself as much as possible. Knowing yourself means being really honest with yourself and being aware of what your problems might be. You have to have a clear idea of your musical aspirations." I like hearing this a lot. I kee coming back to hear this bit. I'd love to hear more. I feel like I don't know myself well, either. I'm trying to work on it.

Hi Denis, I am a teacher and I do believe there is one method that suits all styles of learners and it's based on how we learn our native language as we all learn that in exactly the same way. And it is more than applicable to the guitar. When children learn their first language, they are basically .... transcribing by listening to what they hear and repeating it. I teach music in the same way. Those that don't insist on understanding all the theory behind everything all do really well and grow better than they thought possible.

Thank you Denis. I have a Godin as well (though a 5th ave series), so it was nice to see a Godin on this youtube video. I'm an amateur, but I love learning jazz guitar and love trad and swing jazz music. I've had four different jazz guitar teachers over many years that I stuck with for at least 6 months each. I have to say that each taught in a totally different way. I really didn't know what I needed to learn, or what my strengths or weaknesses were. But, after watching your video, I'm going to list them and work on them, as you suggested and practice. Of course, asking questions of pros I respect is one of the goals.

Hello Denis. Excellent and inspiring presentation. Have followed your career for a number of years. Remarkable. I believe Segovia ( though a known tyrant : ) ) said he, too, was self taught. Curious about the guitar. Considering there are many models from Godin to include the 5th Ave series and the JAZZ, why did you choose the Montreal? Best wishes from So Oregon, USA. Stay safe and healthy.

Denis, I notice your Soundslice pieces of late are more mainstream jazz guitar than gypsy jazz. Are you working more in this area in Taiwan?
@DenisChangMusic
@DenisChangMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Jazz music is really new in Taiwan, and it’s not very diverse. There is nothing ressembling trad jazz or Gypsy Jazz here, so rather than get bored , I decided to explore the straightahead territory, which I always enjoyed but never really seriously worked on! Fear not, the Gypsy Jazz will come back eventually. If not Gypsy Jazz then at least Django :-)

Denis ___ Your Playing is immaculate, Your Instructions are easily understandable, however: ( and there always is a 'however' ), you need to trim down your Chit-Chat, and get to the the business part of the lesson... you can talk forever , without imparting anything of use. Keep unessential's, to a minimum . Thank you !

Yeah being self taught is really frustrating. The method is keep practicing even if you're frustrated, there's no methods, anything that's easy is not worth it. Everyone is different, including me I have adhd, yeah I know what the fuck am I doing if I can't focus, I will keep trying don't care it's my life

It depends what you mean on accompaniment as it’s quite a vast subject . I did make a video on old style accompaniment last year. I think it was called Gypsy Jazz Rhythm Secrets or something, but it only focuses on four to the bar rhythm used by Eddie Lang, Django, Charlie Christian, Freddie Green, Miley Cyrus
