because Square during the PS1/early PS2 era held most of the industry talent for JRPGs. it was only after some of then left to other companies where Square had competition (e.g Xeno series and how it went from Square, to Bandai Namco, to Nintendo). PS2 era, especially after FFX was an arms race between companies and which jrpg would win depended on your preferences as it'd be a long time till the next final fantasy was out (barring 11 being an MMO, 12 didnt come out till 2006). For example in 2003, I'm a big homer for Dark Cloud 2 (Dark Chronicle for anyone outside of NA) which cemented Level-5 to being a major JRPG dev.

As someone who is a bit of an RPG nut, I cannot agree more. The Shadowheart series is perhaps one of the best that's ever existed and Shadow hearts 1 & 2 combined are my favourite RPG of all time, considering that both of them together is a 'complete' story. Just sad really that the third installment was just a giant let down compared to what had come before.

@jamesneeson57519 ай бұрын
This is kind of interesting. Why would you say that? Clearly it is an RPG from Japan, which seems to be the only real conditions for the label. Are you saying it needs to be anime to be a jrpg?
@sanityxgaming62799 ай бұрын
I agree. The souls borne series are more of western style rpg rather than a jrpg. You wouldn't call fallout or oblivion a jrpg. So dark souls wouldn't be one imo.
@heyitsscottyo9 ай бұрын
The distinction between a WRPG and a JRPG is pretty simple. Western RPGs PUT you in a story. Japanese RPGs TELL you a story. In the west, you ARE the main character. In Japan, you PLAY the main character. The W/R distinction has very little to do with the actual local area the game is created in, and everything to do with style. I've never played Elden Ring, but if you follow a linear path with little to no agency on the stories course, that's a JRPG. There are weird exceptions to this classification. The Witcher III comes to mind and a difficult to place game. You play as a main character, with their own personality, their own motives and their own reasons for adventuring requiring little input from the player to justify their place in the plot. However, your decisions have far reaching and often difficult to anticipate outcomes that can vary the adventure/story in large ways creating a unique experience player to player. It treads both paths. It feels right to call it a WRPG, but I couldn't judge someone for calling it a JRPG.
@jamesneeson57519 ай бұрын
@theBeetleGoose as a follow up. Would you consider forspoken a jrpg? It has all the elements your require for one, and yet I think most would not consider it. Also, would you consider dragons crown a WRPG? You don't play a specific character in that and are encouraged to role play. And what makes your resist putting the witcher 3 in that same pile? To me, the reason it seems like an outlier is because of the lack of an anime art style.

25:50 Man, that moment of Silence really adds to the massive impact of the game that follows and that told one of the most epic tales spun across it's two sequels and in the end, with the "Future Redeemed" DLC for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 brought it to such an unparalleled wonderful, satisfying and complete end like no game ever before has done in my ~30 years of gamer career. And I highly doubt anything will anytime soon, considering that Tetsuya Takahashi himself with Xenogears and Xenosagsa refined and reworked and with Xenoblade finally finished his perfect vision of that story....an real life arc of chasing one's perfect dream over 30 years and never giving up until it is done, despite the circumstances. Kudos to this legendary trilogy of games and Kudos to Takahashi for having the energy to pull through for 30 years straight!!!

The first game on this list is also my absolute favourite game. I got it when I was 11 years old and it introduced me to RPGs and set me on my path with video games. It was so much bigger than the previous DQ games, but it also felt more grounded because of the great cast of characters. What a fantastic NES game.

As for Dragon Quest, I only just recently got to play DQ8 and I really enjoyed it. The characters were great, and the world was a lot of fun to enjoy. It's not an open world game, but the game does a good job of making the world feel big and it rewards the players for pushing the envelope and exploring new places they might not be ready for.

Everything you said about FF8 is 100% accurate for me too. It was the very first RPG I ever played, and even then what got me hooked was the demo where Rinoa is in your party for the Dollet battle. Then my step dad at the time bought the full game and it was over from there. When I went back to my dad’s (My dad had main custody when I was a kid), I got $25 for my birthday and went to the store to get a new game with my sights set on FF8 and FF8 only. Unfortunately, I got to the store and saw the $40 price tag on FF8 and my heart sank and my dad refused to cover the rest. Defeated, I looked next to it saw FF7 (greatest hits edition) next to it for $20. My 9-year old self thought “I love 8, maybe I’ll like 7.” I turned the case around and saw all the blocky characters and it almost turned me away after how great the character models looked in FF8 by comparison, but I decided to give it a chance. Little did I know I just made the best decision that shaped my childhood and gaming in general for me that if I could go back to that time and thank 9-year old me, I would. Super stoked for FF7R2, and thank you for the trip down memory lane.

13:20 So did I....so did we all. And FF VIII still holds the credit for being the first ever FF that had a completely vocalized song in it. When people talk about "Cinema Magic" for the greatest moments of Hollywood blockbusters, that for sure is an instance of "Video Game Magic" right there on the Ragnarok.

2017 should be Dragon Quest XI, 2018 should be Octopath Traveler, 2023 should be Octopath Traveler 2.

Nice video, and Maybe someone has said this already, but it’s “swee-ko-den”, not “soo-kuh-dun”. Also Trails in the Sky the 3rd is only playable in English on PC. Just some fun facts that could be included in case someone wants to actually play some of these.
