If he was Japanese, everyone would say that he is the undisputed GOAT. But because he’s French and black, some people attempt to undermine his success by saying that he is just tall and strong.

This dude is a killing machine. I was watching his interview as he was arriving in Guadeloupe 2 days after the Olympics. The journalist asked him what's next? He said I am on holiday forba month then I ll get back to train. Train for what? asked the journalist . His answer was LA 2028

A street and a gymnasium in my neighbourhood are named after him. He legits deserves the legend status, but everybody knows that already.

I like reading the comments of haters or losers stuck in amateur judo who say that he is just big and strong but in this case why does no country in the world line up a guy of his weight and height with the same technique for all these years? Strange that there is only one guy like him who is so strong and his weight and size are absolutely nothing rare in the world of Judo. In short, stop your excuses with your "he's just big and strong". Bunch of loser who can handle than this guy is the goat of history in Judo period.

The GOAT!

He puts the effort, IJF can't do nothing if anotehr guy make him fall. And just because he is strong , some guys like you think he is only strong. He delivered some of the best ippons seen in the heavy weight division, some by attacking straight, some by counters, some in action/reaction... He is very technical, you can't lift and throw 120 kg guys by counting on big arms, if you think it's possible, I wonder what judo gyms you've been to.

Konnichiwa.

In fact, the only one he's had a quarrel with is known to have quite bad attitude. He even hurled insults at Teddy. Terry didn't respond to his provocations and left it at that. Otherwise, Teddy has always had immense respect for Japanese judokas. Moreover, even if France won against Japan in team judo (a Japanese sport), the Japanese won against the French in fencing (a French sport). What I mean is that it's no disgrace to lose to another country in a sport invented by your own nation. It's happened to every country in the world, and it's likely to happen again and again. To conclude, Japan was the 3rd best nation at the Olympics, ahead of Australia and France. You can be proud of your nation and your athletes, they did a fantastic performance.

I think lots of people forget the essence of Judo. Judo means "Gentle way". In French, Judo means "voie de la souplesse", which can be translated as "way of flexibility". Choose which traduction you like the most. Anyway, this is not Judo. This is pure strenght, and limited technique. The sixth first movements shown here are the same. And again later in the video. Yes, as a matter of fact, Teddy Riner is the best competitor. But the best Judoka? No. By the way, in modern Judo tournaments, so many Ippons are not true Ippons. But of course, with some rules modifications, like the suppression of "Yuko", at some point, any projection will allow any Tori to score an Ippon. See the 4th Ippon here. Riner is so strong is he almost turning too much on himself, and his Uke only hits the tatami with the side of his shoulder. Not at least half of the back, as any Ippon should be. As he was also trying to project Riner, Yusupov even thought that he might have scored himself. The 7th one is funny too. For once Riner changed his technique, for something quite simple and useful, some kind of Hiza-Guruma. But you can see Simionescu falling on his left knee and rowling on his thigh, then on his butt. And finally, rotate so much he touched the tatami with his right shoulder. In what world this can be an Ippon? No speed, no strenght, not half of the back on the tatami. (Yeah, there are four criteria to fulfill in the same time to score an Ippon... Control, Speed, Strenght, and hit the tatami with at least half of the back.) In this case, it worth a "Koka" if it still existed. Nothing more. The 10th one is also quite funny... Saito is litteraly diving on the tatami, and protects himself with his left arm. If the side of his shoulder hits the tatami, it's only because of the inertia of Riner falling too. No point should ever been scored on this one... Why "Waza-ari"? Where is the intention of Riner to make Saito fall? Where is his control? Where is his speed? And the Strenght? Not a single criteria to score an Ippon is respected. The only logical decision the referee might have taken would have, maybe, to give a small penalty to Saito. By deleting some old points, Judo competition lost lots of nuances. And it seems referees are quite prompt to give "Ippons" when they decide, and for which competitor they want. In the last Olympics, there were lots of strange decisions made by referees. I heard lots of competitors telling they were bored of this kind of "Judo", and this kind of competition, which is unfair. All that said... Does it lessen the performances of Riner? I don't think so. Like I told before, he is the best competitor, with the current rules of Judo. Nothing forbid to use the same movement in competition, ever, and ever. And obviously, his opponents are almost all never able to beat him. If you want to see what Judo should look like, even with the current rules, which implies more strenght than flexibily... Watch videos of Shohei Ono. His technique is way more impressive than the technique of Riner. (And yes Ono also scored a few times very strange Ippons.)
