This was a lot of fun. I can't imagine a nursery with a bonsai section. Nothing like that around here. Plenty of garden centers, because Tennessee has a great reputation for garden to table, and land scaping, but no bonsai supplies, or even knowledgeable people who even know what bonsai is. They think it's a jade tree. Any tree that I have, I found in the hill behind our apartment building, or from some cuttings that succeeded in rooting. These videos are super helpful. And Peter Chan's Bonsai Bible, of course.

It is easy to forget how different other enthusiasts find things in their own areas. I had someone suggest I should try collecting 'real' trees from the wild! I would - but I don't have a wild anywhere near me to do it :)
@Hollylivengood2 ай бұрын
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Wild is a concept. Urban collecting is wild too. I found two mimosa trees from the woods up the hill from us. But I have a little maple that was growing in trash and rocks from where it all got bulldozed for the build. He can grow in anything and looks great. Just found a juniper in an abandoned grocery store parking lot. Literally bashed through the tar and gravel to grow. Maybe it's not in the "wild," but they sure have stories to tell. Y'all are where I learned how to collect trees and keep cuttings healthy, so I love your journey.

That nursery is a gold mine for bonsai enthusiasts. You kept that a secret to yourself, Jelle will be disappointed you didn't tell him about them the nursery. As always, enjoying your bonsai adventures. I haven't seen a nursery like that in the US. Looking forward to seed to bonsai, but could you expand that to cover buying groups of small bare root whips, like the crab apples I have coming this winter? I shop frequently in the spring at a little seasonal (March thru May) nursery where everything is small like these whips and costs $7. It would be great to know what to do while waiting for them to grow out. My goal is small trees, not giants like your new juniper. Cheers!😊
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat2 ай бұрын
I started something like that with my larch whips last March. To be fair they are just left to grow right now so nothing much to show in 2024. I will be following that up in Spring 2025. I did my crab apple whips in 2017 and they took ages. I will pick some more up this spring and start a comparison style approach to different growing techniques :)
