I have been doing harness fighting since 2009 and have gone through a lot of different helmets and armors. My group started with sallets. They were available, and easy to make safe. From there it would not be until 2016 that we started exploring other armors. Great bascinets, bascinets, bascinet with bevor (a short lived French thing), tournament style great helmets, great bascinet sallet hybrid as seen in the thun sketchbook, armet, etc. and I agree more or less with your opinion on the modern suggestion for practitioners. During some of our classes, we even use open face helmets, for slow work or drills.
@dequitem Жыл бұрын
I also tried many different helmets over time. I startet HMB and Imcf-Duels and Harischfechten around 2015. I startet with a highmedival Spangenhelm with Facemask. That was totally unsave. After that I tryed great helmets, but the neck wasn't protected. Some unhistorical collars from my videos of the last years show that helmet with the brown collar. Occasionally I tryed a Buhurt optimized Bascinet with chaincollar. The helmet was to heavy! After that I build my own helmet a mix of a closed helmet and great bascinet and the closed helmet of the video.

My favourite helmets are sallets (specifically Italian ones, but the sigismund harness one is beautiful like the rest of the armour). there are ways to make a sallet more tournament appropriate. like strapping over your bevor, or doing a bellows type sallet or a sallet with an integral bevor. a sallet is great and versatile, just not as inherently protective as some other helmets.
@andyperez27424 ай бұрын
@@TheDragorin i really appreciate you mentioning what you stated. I was starting to think about that only thing is I'm not learned in regards to armor. I am entry level rookie beginner. Sallet helmet is the only helmet that i remember it's name and styles (one piece or two piece. I prefer one piece .) so I still need to learn a lot more about armor. For instance, i am very interested in the parts of armor that protect lower arms (elbow down), lower legs (knee down), chest back and in particular the area around the neck collar bone and face. I am a volunteer in Santa Clarita that goes around helping the Poor and Homeless. I require light armor but but not a lot so as to have less weight and mover ability. I've been attacked quite a number of times and having armor has saved my life but they broke as a result since they were plastics
@finnl68878 ай бұрын
So basically, sallets are more practical on actual battlefield where long term stamina, the ability to make yourself heard, and improved visibly were required, but provided the poorest defense in tournaments or duels including modern buhurt? Makes sense.
@TheDragorin4 ай бұрын
not the "poorest defense" but pretty poor. there are plenty of less protective helmets out there.
@stefthorman85484 ай бұрын
I think he meant, "poorest" of full armor, since the top and bottom isn't connected, and not rigid, yes, it's better then not having neck and lower face protection, but it isn't great in defence when compared to other types of helmets.
@sirfijoe4503 ай бұрын
@@stefthorman8548 There are some sallets I have seen where the bevor and helm are actually connected almost like a close helm. It seems very protective.
@andyedwards9222Ай бұрын
I agree with your assessment of helmets, very sensible and informed, matches my own assessment. I favour the sallet/bevor combination but only because our fighting system limits degree and severity of head hits. I would definitely upgrade to a great bassinet for greater protection and reserve the wallet for field use.
@grahammacbean4989 Жыл бұрын
The only way i would wear a sallet for buhurt is a late period 'close sallet', where the bevor is locked to the sallet, and is basically a close helm that looks like a sallet.
@dequitem Жыл бұрын
But even that helmet has some disadvantages in safety combare to other closed helmets, especially against thrust. Yes in Buhurt thrusts are not allowed, but it wouldn't be the first time that I see a wolfrip helmet fail!
@ChaoticSorceror3 ай бұрын
I love the sallet but I can 100% agree it's not the safest for a 1v1 heavy armor duel. Its strengths lie in its versatility of wear, which is fantastic for battlefields where you might be fighting for hours, but as cavalry, or in a tournament, there are definitely safer options.

What are you opinios on doing 16th century harnischfechten and the lack of openings in the later armors (gorget, voiders of plate, hoguine, codpiecd, etc.)
@dequitem Жыл бұрын
Yes that is sometimes difficult. I myself have chosen some pieces of armor that have gaps and openings that the opponent can use. This is not good for me, but it makes the battles more interesting. Duels in completely closed armor often end in wrestling with a dagger, this is fine for me, but makes the whole prelude with the sword sometimes questionable and in my videos is just stretched for the viewers without it really being relevant. However, it is more complicated to do harness fencing with 13th century armor, because the chain mail can be vulnerable to everything but not necessarily, you never know if you should count a hit or not.

I’m looking into getting some armor. I’m drawn to the arm street armor lines (I don’t have access to any local blacksmiths so online shops are my only way in to this world) they are very beautiful armors but I’m curious if I should be looking into places that focus on selling simpler armors specifically for things like buhurt? I’m not interested especially in buhurt itself I’m much more drawn to the style of sparring you do but I feel I’ll wind up mixing in with buhurt people if I end up getting into this. Long story short, what are your opinions on getting armor through arm street specifically and also just generally any online retailers you might recommend for armor?

Exept the helmets, Buhurt armors are a very good choice in my opinion! The more expensive stuff from armstreet looks okay, the cheap stuff doesn't look like you would feel good in it, but I don't have experience with them.
