My dad couldn't get me interested in basketball. My husband couldn't get me interested in it, either. It bored me, an MLB and NFL fan. Two years ago I was watching YT and for some reason a Bird video came up and against all odds, I watched it. I have been mesmerized by Bird and the 80's and 90's bb ever since.

Larry was also angry. He wasn't going to let Person get him. By the way, as the teams were leaving the floor, Person was walking just in front of Bird. If you look you'll see one security guy put his hand on Person's back and there's another longer clip of this that shows a second security person also starts walking behind Person. Don't know which one they might have been protecting. Also, Chuck Person was a good player and received several awards during his playing career, including NBA rookie of the year in 1987. After his playing career was over he became an assistant coach for 17 years with 6 different teams. But that came to an end on 9/25/17 when he, along with several other people, was involved in a college recruitment scandal. Person avoided prison by pleading guilty to a bribery charge. I'm a Bird fan for many reasons. His all around game, his heart, his commitment to work and his appreciation of the fans. I also love the fact he didn't play just for the money. The day he retired, he knew that if he waited less than a week his new multi-million dollar contract would kick in. So when the Celtics president said "Why not wait a week" Bird told him, if he couldn't play, he wouldn't take the money.

You're right and that was the work ethic that he got from his father. I don't remember what year it was but Larry sat down cuz the game was in the bag and he only needed one more assist for a quad. A QUADRUPLE DOUBLE. Polo use the word heroic tonight on this video to describe Larry. That's one of those things that makes him heroic.

He was unbelievable! I can still remember watching that game like it was yesterday. He had no quit in his body. I have never seen a player like Bird, he gave everything he had to will his team to win. No player has ever done that like he did. I still believe if Bird had not break his back after the 86 season, and if Len Bias had not passed. Bird would have at least 3 more rings, and I think Bird would have put up number that would still be unbreakable! He was just different. He is my GOAT, and it's not even close!

I remember back then the games really weren’t over till the buzzer. A 15 point lead was nothing, only 7 buckets and Showtime could and did do that plus. Boston had the ability with their half court game to slow the tempo and make the other teams play their type of ball. Great teams back then, even fun to listen to Chick Hern

Love the channel, first of all. Bird is my alltime favorite athlete and this video highlights a pinpoint example. A concussion, broken bone in his face, and in TRACTION for hours pregame just to be able to play! NO wheelchair, NO facemask, NOT even a single person helping him off the damn floor! Beast! This dude still averaged 24/9/7 as an older injured player. This was a testament to what he could have been without the injuries, with Len Bias & Reggie Lewis not passing away early, and what he could have done if he 'practiced' or was more familiar with the 3pt line growing up or had a coach that encouraged more 3pt attempts!! Other than being an average athlete for 6'9..." (or 6'10" according to Chris Webber, Paul Pierce, and Jamaal Mashburn) Larry Bird was the most all-around, smartest, 'clutchest' player to ever play the game. On top of being one of the greatest shooters ever (he created the 50/40/90 club and won the first three 3pt contests) he was one of the greatest passers ever especially at small forward position, (he's considered the greatest outlet passer ever by most other greats) "averaged" 10 rebounds for a career, (with two other great bigs on his frontline and with injuries! Which was more than Patrick Ewing!) and, would have won more chips if the Eastern Conference wasnt 10x's tougher than the West back in the 80's. He also won College Player of the Year, ROTY, 3 back-to-back MVP's, 3 all-defensive teams (pre injurys), created the 50/40/90 club, won 3 consecutive MVP's, won 2 Finals MVP's, had the Gold medal in the Olympics with the Dream Team, won a Coach of the Year Award, and won an Executive of the Year Award. Bird has won more all around awards than any player ever, hands down! MJ has no coaching awards and definately has zero Executive of the Year Awards! Lmao!!! 😂

The way I heard it, Prior to a Christmas Day game, Person told reporters that The Rifleman was in the building and that he was going Bird hunting. Some told Bird, of course. While they were waiting for the opening jump ball, Bird told Person he had a Christmas present for him. At a point where Person was on the bench, Bird came down in front of their bench and put up a three-pointer. Before the ball went through the rim, Bird turned to Person and..... wished him a merry Christmas 😏 ..... and ..... the ball swished through the net.

When Larry was being attended to in the training room, the doctor told him that you had a good run and your not going back out there. Besides the back injury he also suffered a concussion and fractured check bone, Larry said your right Arnie, then when his back was turned Bird slipped out and the rest is history. This was the same doctor who would perform surgery on his back when he retired.

Hi Polo! I grew up watching football starting in the 70s. But I can tell you the NFL is no different - as I'm sure you're aware. My point is, I think the difference between today's game and all the years prior just comes down to money. When a team is paying you tens of millions of dollars, they don't want to risk them unless it is the finals or the championship. That's the management side of it. From the players perspective - they're already getting theirs. All they need is a small injury and they can sit out for a while and still get paid. Again, everybody wants that ring, so I don't see any leaders from any sport sitting out in the playoffs with a minor injury. But reg season, most likely sitting back and just counting that money. Being a football fan in the 70s, it wasn't unusual for there to be blood on somebody's uniform - especially as a Raider fan. Football today doesn't interest me. It's still rough, but way too many penalties, everything just looks so clean and sterile in most turf stadiums, the replays from the booth???, stupid choreographed dancing in the end zone. Nah. Not for me, Polo. Celebrating a touchdown while you're still losing the game is not a fighter. It's a narcissist. Jeter was my fav baseball player ever bc he played every play like he was in the playoffs. Every single ball he hit, he hustled to first base. Even knowing it was an easy fly ball, or the occasional homer, he would still get out that box fast every single time. A true leader and champion, while making that money. Now look at the Yanks. I used to go to the stadium at least once a year as my son was growing up, but I think I've only been to the new stadium a couple of times. It's a 3 hour trip each way by car, the prices are crazy, tickets are insane - and they lose. It could easily cost me from $400-700 bucks to go see a baseball game, and not have great seats. And this before the big C hit us. I haven't been nowhere near the city since then. Sorry for the novel. I could've just said, it's all about the Benjamins, and left it at that, but you deserve a little more insight than that. You just gave us yours, and I appreciate it. Have a great day, my friend!!

When Larry went down and left for the locker room, his teammates didn't really know why/how he'd wound up on the floor. _They didn't know if they had just experienced the end of his career._ I personally think that is part of what affected their concentration during the time he was in the locker room.

A lot of people compare Patrick Mahomes to Jordan, but I think he more closely compares to Bird. Not just for the WTF magic moments, but playing through injuries, spreading the ball around and doing everything he can do to win the game. And most of all, leadership, by word and example. Special players. Jordon's special too, but he never really covered any of what I mentioned as well as Bird did. Call Jordan the GOAT, and I don't mind, but if I was drafting a team and had a choice between Bird and Jordan, I'll take Bird every time. Intangibles matter too.

I began watching NBA basketball during the late 1960s. There have been many great players over the years; but for me it was fairly easy to pick out the very best player of each decade until the 2000s. After that, I watched fewer games, so to me each subsequent decade has had 2 - 4 stars (in no particular order) that I can’t decide between. I respect that other people may pick different players than me, but these are my choices: 1960s - Wilt Chamberlain 1970s - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 1980s - Larry Bird 1990s - Michael Jordan 2000s - Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett 2010s - LeBron James, Stephen Curry 2020s (so far) - Nickola Jokic, Luka Doncic

Totally agree. I believe in giving your all in a game and being competitive, but to purposely try and cripple a guy, and you can clearly see he went for the lower back to hurt him, that's just wrong and he should have been fined and suspended. You notice Larry didn't complain to the refs like someone else we know would. He got up and just busted Chuck's ass and showed him who the real King was. He almost went to prison a few years ago for accepting bribes for funnelling top player to people posing as government employee. As a player I'd compare him to Lance Stephenson but not as goofy. #35 Reggie Lewis was a great young player who was next in line to lead the Celtics franchise. He had quickly risen to being arguably Bostons overall best player in the early 90s as Birds career was winding down. Unfortunately he would die a couple years after this game due to a fatal heart attack. He was only 27 at the time of his death. Boston was not able to recover from his loss. It took almost a decade after Reggie died before Boston would put together another contending team. Reggie was most likely on his way to a hof career at most and at least was on his way to becoming a multiple time allstar.

In defense of today's player, they wouldn't be allowed to come back in after a concussion. Also, Larry had nothing, career wise, to save his body for. It was an elimination game, at home, vs a rival, in his last season. He may not have decided that at the time, but knew it was possible. All that said, the game was so much more physical in this era.

And what You don't know, Is the Doctor told Larry He was done & could Not go back in. Larry waited until the Doctor walked away & Larry went back in anyway. Also Larry 1st hurt His back in 1985, So He played 7-More years dealing with a Bad Back. And He was in His Prime still in 1985-88. At the beginning of 1988-89 Season Larry only played 6-games, He had to get Surgery on Both Feet for Achilles. He also had 2-different Back Surgery's. Larry Loved the Game & Guess what The Team needed Larry out on that court. The Celtics Franchise tried to pull a fast one on Larry. After the Olympics, He called the Big Guys in the Franchise and Told them He was going to Retire. He knew His back had gotten to a point where in His own words said, " I couldn't feel My feet when moving Or running at times". But the Franchise needed Larry because of His High BB IQ. They even tried to make a deal with Him His contract wouldn't be lowered on Pay (in fact a raise), That He just would Play only Home games & if His back was to bad on some of those days, that was find too. Larry being a Man, Said No, I could take Money when I know I can't earn it. They still would keep putting Larry off, Because Larry needed to go in and Sign His Retirement papers. By a certain date On His contract would Roll into a New contract. So finally, Larry Knew what They were trying to pull to Keep Him. So One day Larry Called Them & Told Them; Hey Either You all can Or I will Call the Sport's Journalists up Today. Because I'm leaving to come up there Now & Sign My retirement papers & I Want this all Done in This One Day. And that is Exactly how it was Done. You can find Him there with some of the Big Wigs & Journalist's all there Here on Yt somewhere. So Yes Larry Still could of Had a Career; But He wasn't going let Them Pay Him if He wasn't able to Be out there on that court enough. How many Real Men do You See in this "Crap Of BB Playing" That wouldn't take that offer? Answer: NONE

We didn’t really appreciate his greatness back then because it was just another game and Larry was playing, year in year out. It only hit you later when you realized he was no longer going to play that night or anymore nights. The most entertaining for me was watching his off ball movements and court placement, he didn’t have to have possession of the ball to draw your attention, he had your attention as soon as his first step on the court.

It's difficult to compare players against different generations. Bird's rookie stats: 21.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 84 percent foul shooting and 41 percent three-point field goal accuracy. But that isn't the story of his greatness. He was a TEAM player. He only took 17.8 shots per game. His team play lifted Boston from a mere 29 wins to a league-best 61 in just one season.

The early 90s Celtics are often overlooked but they were still a very dangerous team. Injuries to Bird and Mchale kept them from making it back to the conference finals and possibly even the finals. Woulda been hard to get by Chicago but if Bird and Mchale were not as banged up, i think they were probably the only team in the East who could beat Chicago in the early 90s besides Detroit. Boston won their division in 91 and 92 winning over 50 games both seasons with Bird and Mchale missing a lot of games and limited playing time.

I wonder if any other Celtics fans here get that horrible feeling seeing Reggie Lewis on the court with Larry. We were facing the fact that Larry was leaving but we were so hopeful because Reggie was there. I remember every minute of the day Reggie died....

I remember that day and like most die hard Celtics fans got choked up as he also had played at Northeastern University in Boston so we all had watched him grow up playing there in college then getting drafted by the Celtics. Those of us who are a bit older also know how good that team would have been with both Reggie Lewis and Len Bias taking the mantle from McHale and Bird.

Chuck person the rifleman….. was above average player during the regular season… in the playoffs he played like a Hall of Famer….. unfortunately he never won anything in his career…. But he could be a hell of a marksman when he was on… Basketball Has a rich history of talented players that nobody today has any idea about today ☮️❤️🙏🌍🌎🌏🇺🇸❤️☮️

6:14 It's weird. The only reason why I know anything about this era of BB is because of my mom. She was a fanatic about the NBA.

I'm old school. i'm 57 .. and more a football fan than basketball.. It hurt my heart as a Raven's fan when Lamar got a sudden injury or whatever.. and didn't play when we needed him to.. because he hadn't gotten the money yet that his Momma said he should get.. I just don't like that.. back in the day they played for the love of the game.. back then.. they weren't getting much money. So many players from the 70's and 80's.. never thought to hold out for money.. they were just thankful to play... Today.. it's all about the money

Sadly the main reason Persons was shoving Larry around so much was Persons knew Larry was in pain and wearing a back brace, pretty weak if ya ask me taking advantage of it.

Byrd played w/ bad back that he had recently broke, broken bone in face and concussion...If your comparing. That's slot worse than MJ having a fever

I think you jumped the gun with the "bit of a flop" assessment. It is my understanding that Bird only played in three of this series of 5 playoff games against the Pacers due to his back issues. Every hour he wasn't playing or practicing, he was wearing a rigid body brace. He spent the night before the fifth game in the hospital in traction in an effort to be able to contribute to a win for the team.

Yeah, Paul shit on himself so he faked an injury to get carried off the court without embarrassing himself… then came back and shit on the Lakers 😢
