The Best (Legal) Way to Avoid Paying Back Taxes Owed

If you can afford to pay your taxes, it's your duty to do so. But if you have to choose between paying the IRS for back taxes owed and paying for basic needs, there is a legal way that you can avoid paying your taxes. Attorney Eric Olsen is the founder and Executive Director of the HELPS Nonprofit Law Firm, which helps people with debt problems. His firm has helped many seniors and others go on Currently Not Collectible status with the Internal Revenue Service, which relieves them of paying their unpaid taxes. In Part 1 of this two-part video, Eric explains that people don't have to choose between paying their taxes and paying for necessities. He explains how people can qualify for Currently Not Collectible status, how they can apply for it with a simple phone call, and what they need to do to prepare for that phone call that could save them thousands of dollars in taxes.

It took me 1 1/2 hours on hold and I finally got a IRS employee on the other end to make an appointment. It took 30 mins. of arguing before she gave me the appointment. I had IRS letters from Austin, TX, Fresno, CA, Kansas, Utah, Phoenix... Yet this person, claims that she sent me all these letters, She started telling me, "Well I sent you that letter because". She did not know about The 10 year stature of limitations, or Not collectable status. she sounded like a scammer. With your videos I was confident and sounded smarter than this person. Thank You!

I have and will continue... I made it to my appt. with IRS and was told that , Yes , They would put me on "Non Collectable status" they were also clueless about "The stature of limitation of 10 years. She said she thought it was 12 years.

I don't see how the IRS would accept verbal as opposed to written statements of assets/income when applying for CNC status that won't result in some sort of follow up verification. Also, I think it's wise to have the taxpayer's attorney and/or CPA guide them through the questions so they don't wind up making statements that can be used against them later (i.e. accidentally volunteering information that wasn't part of the question which seniors typically do). Thoughts?

IRS takes people's word every day of the week. You realize that the IRS can see the person's income, for example, Social Security. Also, there is no way on earth that a lower-income or poor senior could afford a taxpayer attorney or CPA to help them. Often they barely have enough to pay for utilities, food and other basics. And they don't need that help. Taxpayer attorneys and CPA's help people with money. Eric HELPS
