Regarding those Dyneema spokes @7:45. What knot did they use to hold the spokes to the hub? Looks like they trimmed the ends off pretty close. Do they ever come untied? I also know that there better be no burrs in those drilled out holes. One question, could you lace one piece of Dyneema as two spokes to avoid the knots? If so, you could lace the same piece of spoke to the same side and cut down on the number of holes to drill in the hub.
@albr45 жыл бұрын
I really think they should be riding heavier, 50mm aero wheels since the aero saving will most certainly be faster than the weight saving (as long as they go faster than 15mph). 5:25 that bullhorn idea is great, not sure why everyone doesnt use these, lighter and definitely more aero than drop bars

10:20 - how do you get a drivetrain to spin as smoothly as that?
@mrnobody98215 жыл бұрын
Thomas King it doesn’t mean anything, what matters is the resistance under load.
@mikefandango22964 жыл бұрын
Ceramic ball bearings with no grease, just a light oil. They need to be re-oiled after every short ride. If you spin a normal bike with gears correctly set the resistance in the bearings (grease) will slow the movement. If anything is out of sync chain, over greased bearings the bike will have resistance under load. Although then again the Lad that Won was on the heaviest bike with alloy wheels and a double chain ring 😂

being older, growing up at the end of steel bikes, hill climb bikes are closer in my mind to what a race bike should be, skeletal things with every gram possible shaved off. with technology advancing to the point that you can have an chunky looking aero bike around the minimum weight , climbing bikes are becoming a bit redundant in road racing. isn't it time for the UCI to look into dropping minimum weight?

@peterparahuz70945 жыл бұрын
1:07 hmmmm. light wheels have lower rotational inertia, which means that the cyclist can accelerate faster. this is a significant advantage on flat stages/races or the track, where the finish is a sprint. but less important when fighting gravity. when climbing, the key is the total weight. so yes, lighter wheels help. but only a little bit, because the wheels are only a fraction of the total weight. the heaviest element by far is the rider. so the most cost effective method to improve climbing speed is to reduce the weight of the rider. obviously there is some limit, below which you cannot reduce weight. so the best climbers are typically those riders who have that limit the lowest, i.e. who are very short and very thin.
@WHAT_14005 жыл бұрын

I've done just about everything I can to an all-round road bike to lower weight. It's a carbon frame, Reynolds tubular wheels, Dura-Ace 9000 gropuset. Not unlike the Ridley at the end but I can't get it down below 7kgs. Going from Ultegra to DA saved all of 200 grams. The only thing I can change for more carbon is the handlebar and a lighter saddle. That might save another 200 grams. These guys are a full kilo lighter again.
@SonjaTheDork5 жыл бұрын
earthstick || Yeah, the tech here is ridiculous. My race bike is a pretty budget oriented build (as it's really all I can afford). Aluminum frame, carbon fork, chinese 50mm carbon wheels, Shimano 105 5800 w/Ultegra calipers, and all this ends up with a weight of 8.4kg.
@earthstick5 жыл бұрын
@Aramintai I agree the wheelset is where the biggest savings can be made. That's why I choose shallow section carbon tubulars from a good manufacturer. They weigh 1070g without tyres. Groupset is DA and the finishing kit is carbon apart from the bars. Carbon bars don't save much. If I forget puncture protection and went for the lightest tyres I could save about 200g. A Carbon bar and saddle with no padding would save about aother 150 grams so I could just sneak in under 6.8kgs but I would no longer have an all-round bike.

Why does everyone have both brakes? You could save some grams by only having the front/rear without any cables. You could even only use one hood and save a lot of weight. I was also surprised that most of these bikes still had paint, if you took it off you could shave about 100g-150g off the total weight
@gcntech5 жыл бұрын
You have to have two brakes to compete in the hill climb
