I just geeked out to your video over my morning coffee. It's great to hear you talking about steeel again. Reminds me of when you first stared your video career with the welding series - which by the way I miss! Anyway, I built a modern outdoor fireplace (?) (firebox?) not sure what to call it, but it made out of Corten steeel. I love how it rusted and will protect itself, and would love to know more about how this works. I'll leave the coffee pot on ...

@JordanSmithBuilds
@JordanSmithBuilds 5 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say. Galvanized steel has been around in the building industry for a lot longer, so we regularly see 50 year old buildings in need of new metal. Galvalum was invented in the 70's and hasn't been used as roofing material for nearly as long as galvanized, so I don't have a great feel for how much longer it lasts. Price-wise galvalum will win it for shear availability in a large number of rib patterns. Galvanized is pretty limited to a standard corrugations pattern, which can be pricier than r or u panel.

If you want a colored roof buy your metal roofing prepainted, Both galvalum and galvanized panels do not take paint well when field applied. Also no warranty Factory painted panels are similar to auto finishes and usually come with a 40yr warranty

Are special pieces (ridge caps, Chimney flashing etc. the money sucker?) expensive? Is it difficult acquire and more expensive for 24 ga.? Is it easy for "Harry the Homeowner" to purchase or is this one of those secret society like HVAC guys only supplies to buy? Easy to cut? What did it cost for this home?

On a Mike Holmes barn recovery video, they used several steps on a rusty galvanized roof starting with blowers to remove the leaves and pine needles, then I believe they power washed the roof and ultimately they coated the entire roof with spray able cork. Would the cork prevent any further deterioration of the galvanized roof? Thanks.

It looks like you didn't use any sheeting material underneath the roof overhangs leaving them completely exposed. Did you use sheeting material underneath the rest of the house roof? I'm curious to see how much extra noise you experience from the open back overhangs/roof when it rains. I'd think that it would sound like my old pole barn (that had a completely exposed underside of the roof).

Have heard everything's big in Texas, including the size of hail. Was told it can destroy a metal roof so if you could, please explain the cost/benefit of high dollar roofing material. I'M here to learn so if I'm wrong let me know. Exposed rafter tails, minimal eaves, great look but the damage to siding, erosion and if high clay content, aren't you asking for trouble? Great looking house though.

Would a parrafin wax mixed with zinc oxide sprayed on the underside of metal roofing panels extend the rust resistance ? Or would the wax degrade from the heat? Parrafin is a very long chained hydrocarbon known as a "saturated hydrocarbon" and is the most stable of the natural hydrocarbons. Parrafins are known as alkanes and are inert substances which don't react with other materials. Cosmoline is an example of a parrafin based metal preservative with a long history of success. I'm just curious, I'm sure someone has considered this topic before.

@@hellonoko oh, I see. Stainless works similarly to aluminum in the way it doesn't an oxide layer which protects the underlying metal. Stainless has at least 10.5% chromium which reacts with oxygen to create a chromium-oxide layer over the surface of the metal, preventing it from oxidizing further.

Great video especially. On the Geeky stuff another issue with modern boats That. Speed up the corrosion is that marinas are notorious for having faulty. Electrical systems due to the harsh eviorment of high moisture and salt water tha t creates a lot of stray electricity to enter the water and making it speed up electrolysis on all the weakest. Metals Because of the way vessels are grounded that electrolysis will often eat engines. From the inside out basically and cause major problem they do make sacrificial zincs to mount strategically in the engines that. Will help direct the rlrctricity to that. Part with the hopes that it wont eat The engine metals that and a good wiring job can help prevent serious problems but then again as vessels get aged they. Often do have electrical problems that don’t get. Repaired correctly all the time especially when done at sea and when all the correct parts aren’t available often the crew has to just do a patch job. To keep the crew and vessel as safe as possible Therefore a roof and a boat. Would each have completely different enviorments As the roof isnt. Sitting in a live battery of electric I’m thinking that has something to do with why that roof system is better than the galvanized one In the manner that their coating protects the metal by sealing. Out the elements I watched your video Because i am hoping to build on my next home and i prefer. The thought and look of the metal roofs
