Joe calzaghe was one of Britain’s best boxers ever. Very underrated , heart of a lion & never lost. Retired undefeated. And yet no knighthood. But if you are a talentless tv personality or a singer happy days.

Calzaghe the real deal, the ability to adapt throughout the fight is a quality that only in him you could see
@beadlebaby904 жыл бұрын
Calzaghe had a great boxing brain with ability to adapt, not sure if his notorious hand trouble was the reason for his strange punching style. Not pretty to look at but it clearly worked for him. I believe calzaghe was an elite fighter, he unfortunately appeared on the boxing scene in between other top oppositions careers starting and ending, it seemed easy for everyone to say he beat people when they were not their best. But you can only fight the people your promoter is willing to put in front of you. People will always say he beat finished fighters in Roy jones and Eubank or that he avoided froch etc. The fact is that you have to appreciate a good fighter when you see one. Boxing is a hard hard game and anyone that beats a champion to win a world title deserves some credit.

@Sam Harris No way... all hopkins did was try to grab onto joe and lean on him, hoping to pick the occasional shot. Unfortunately for Hopkins, Joe was the superior boxer, with a superior work rate. He threw more, landed more...and Calzhage has a great chin! I;m guessing you have the same racial animus that ruined BHs reputation...
@leeturner80234 жыл бұрын
Bradley Anderson Yes, he had to adapt to speedy arm punches. They’re not power shots, but he could land 5 to an opponents face while they’re trying to wind up a power shot. This is why Lacy was ripe pickings for him. Also with arm punches, they expend less energy, never put you off balance and non-telegraphic and very hard to defend against.
@sabyseb51043 жыл бұрын
his ability to pull fouls via illegal headshots ..... Referees are supposed to take a point when a fighter doesn't direct his punches to his opponent's face so instead hitting him in the back of the head thus, causing brain damage .. 🥷

The problem with American boxing at that stage was the big fighters such as Jones and Hopkins were hand picking their fights. They would avoid the most dangerous fighters to take opponents they knew that could be beaten by their style. It was the era that boxing started to become cynical and the show man clowns started to dominate.

@gabrieltsgardner99424 жыл бұрын
@Thomas Emilio Respectfully, thats a slanted statement. If he fought over-aged, over the hill fighters in his own prime? you'd have a point. The reality? People are referring to the Jones and B-Hop fights *only* in a 46 fight career, which were Calzaghe's last two fights, when he was out of his own prime. A destructive win over Lacy (the huge betting favourite in that fight) and beating a prime Kessler handily (who would be a player at that weight for a number of years afterwards, toppling Carl Froch and being one of the bigger notches on Andre Ward's belt) show you how good he was.

Hopkins is a legend but he didn’t do enough . Calzhage is the most underrated fighter of the last 25 years. Watch his total demolition of Jeff left hook Lacy and then say he isn’t quality . Lacy was rightly touted as the man to finally beat Calzhage. He was a world champion, unbeaten and came into the fight with an excellent record. Joe Calzhage completely destroyed Lacy in the most one sided fight I’ve ever seen. Calzhage beat Kessler , Eubank, Bika , Jones jr ( admittedly at the end of his career) , and every top fighter of his generation. He’s accused of being a slap puncher and to a point that’s a valid point . However, his handspeed was incredible, the volume of punches thrown to punches connected beyond belief which was due to impeccable conditioning. He had a granite chin and never fought defensively. He reigned for over 10 years and retired undefeated. You can’t argue with that record . I understand the Americans not giving him the credit he deserves, but ain’t it funny how the same people jump on the Deontay Wilder band wagon when he’s fought nobody of any class . Oh , apart from a washed up old man in Luiz Ortiz .

Hopkins goes into the boxing books as a great, Calzaghe goes in as a God. Why he still doesnt get the credit he deserves baffles the 💩 out of me, for his era and weight class, there was NOBODY better. Long Live Joe Calzaghe the King

Loved seeing Bernard get his dirty fighting ass kicked here

The disrespect to Calzaghe is ridiculous, he was a fantastic fighter who doesn't get the credit he deserves because he was ducked by the bigger names.

Hopkins was never hurt , Calzhage put down in round 1 with a straight right , which Hopkins would score at will throughout the fight because Calzhage came in many times with his head down . That's why Hopkins would go to the ropes. Also Hopkins was 43 and Calzhage could not take him out . Ultimately Calzhage won but Hopkins gave him all he could handle .

Many people talk about how old Hopkins was in this fight. Granted, Calzaghe was 7 years younger; but Calzaghe was certainly more past his prime than Hopkins. Bernard was 43, but Joe was 36. Bernard fought for years at the highest level of the sport after this fight (mostly due to his excellent defensive skills) but by the time this fight happened Calzaghe's hands were shot, he was clearly past his best, this was his first fight at light-heavyweight and in America, and yet he still beat Bernard. If they fought in 2002 like they were supposed to I think this fight would have looked almost exactly the same.

I agree I think roy would have been harder fight if it was 2002 cal to win still but only just

Calzaghe didn't "win". He landed a few more slaps than Hopkins. He is made to miss and Hopkins isn't throwing many punches

Calzaghes hand issues unfortunately were horrendous when he turned 30. By the time the lacy fight came around it is well documented that he was going to pull out again with hand issues but his dad made him take the fight. Joe did zero sparring for lacy and very little for the rest of his career. Concentrated on fitness and speed running up and down the Welsh valleys.

Messy fight that didn't really show Calzaghe at his best but still deserved to win as he was prepared to go out and graft for it, hence showed greater range than Hopkins who also has the annoying Mayweather shoulder roll.

Highlights carefully selected to favour Hopkins. Funny how the faked low blows wasn't on this ... Hopkins would have got tko'd without that 5min rest. You have to respect Bernard's better performances but his behaviour when he was struggling against the best in the division was absolutely horrible.
@jonnotuckster88564 жыл бұрын
Lol when you edit a video to make Hopkins look like he should have won but he still looked average against joe
@TreforTreforgan4 жыл бұрын
Hardly the best performance by either fighter really. Both went on from this to give a performance of a lifetime.

Agree bud just made me laugh how some people try to make it look like it should have been a different result lol 😂
@TreforTreforgan4 жыл бұрын
jonno tuckster Hopkins just had a hit a hold spoiler’s mentality, which was a shame. At least Roy Jones stood in front of Calzaghe and actually boxed. Well, at least he kept to Freddie Roach’s game plan though, eh.

Quillan Jacobson yup. Around the same time Mayweather was on Dancing With the Stars. I reckon B-Hop was jealous and was grabbing Joe coz he wanted to do a waltz with him.

Thats funny because he regained the belts afterwards, becoming ring and lineal champion also. So he was 120 by then and still doing the business!
