This might not be relevant to a lot of people but if you ever get stung by a jellyfish, as much as it burns, vinegar really helps. Got stung on both hands a few years back in Spain, which is really ironic because where I was there had been maybe two jellyfish sightings in the last ten years and yet, moi, managed to get stung by one. As further example of my very prevalent (*ironie*) luck, the only pharmacy/drug store that was open that day was severely understocked and didn't have anything to soothe the burning. Which is why I found out that wetting tissue paper with vinegar and placing it on the sting, will lessen the irritation and the burning will stop for a bit. Thought I'd share in case anyone ever finds themselves in the same situation. (Please don't pee on yourself because that's a myth.)

Regarding that plakat betta, I have seen bettas that look like that, it’s basically just a horrible deformity. That betta looks like it has really bad scoliosis (also referred to as “humpback”). Typically the recommendation is to buy a betta with little to no dip near the mouth. Some dip is fine. Excessive dip from the back to the mouth is typically a sign of deformity.

in my opinion, there's a huge difference between "surviving" and "thriving" - too many people go with the absolute minimum for things to get by. sure, there can be cases where that works, but what kind of life is it? a fish stuck in a tank (or something that people think can replace one) where they don't have room to move, sometimes not even turn, filthy conditions, barely able to squeak by and keep on living. it's cruel, and while they might not be killing their fish swiftly, it's a slow, agonizing death while they just....exist. kind of like someone living in a closet for their lifetime, with barely enough oxygen surrounded by their own filth. whatever kind of pet you get, it's a living creature that's depending on you for their care. go for the best care you can give it within your budget, and if that's not enough to provide a good life, no matter if it's a cheap species or not, don't get it to begin with

The one with the rainwater barrel could actually be a temporary habitat. Especially if you have a pond that is likely to freeze through, they can be a good way for your fish to survive winter. They're cheap and they can hold quite a lot of water. A large barrel with good filtration isn't a bad enclosure, it's just not pretty. And it is definitely waaaay better than putting the fish in a small (e.g. 40 gallon or less) aquarium. I just saw a post where someone asks for help because the water in her 11 gallon tank containing four medium sized goldfish is running wild. My tank is a bit over 90 gallons and appart from the financial aspects - this thing is going nowhere, not even empty. It's heavy and you can't just store it away in the summer. So a large barrel might actually be an amazing option.

The other day, I went to a minigolf course with a very, very green pond. My only relief was that I didn't see any fish for over an hour...until I saw a dying, bent goldfish. That's when I realized there were others. They swam very slow, letting me know there was barely any oxygen in that water.

@hollanderson3 жыл бұрын
I don't know the context behind the fish in the bottom of the barrel one, and while I've not defending what they are doing to the fish, this is actually not uncommon at all to see, at least for me 10 years ago. I've seen setups like this, commonly in rainwater barrels, that collect the water runoff from the roof. The water is collected and then used for watering plants or for flushing. Very often, these barrels are filled with mosquitoes offspring, hence why people put fish and mint leaves in there to prevent an outbreak. I've seen them in South Eastern China, the Philippines, Germany and England. It genuinely works very well, and seems to be genuinely a common practice all over the world in more rural parts of the countries, no matter the level of income. I think it very much depends on how the people feel about the fish, because some of these individuals also have their own fish tanks inside their homes which have a reasonable setup, and that they do genuinely care about the fish inside. I guess fish considered as pets are more privileged than the ones considered as "workers". So while the continuation of this practice should probably be stopped, there is weirdly an actual "culture" behind it.

Geléfiskar, what you guys call Swedish Fish, is a very nice kind of sweets. If not visiting Sweden, you can still get it - your local IKEA might sell it. Directly translated from Swedish to English, Geléfiskar is; Jelly Fish. Our word for Jelly Fish fish (why is it called fish?... the creatures living in the sea) are called; Maneter. Like the English word Sea nettle, but in Swedish Mar (sea)+ Neta (old word for nettle) = Ma(r)net(a) = Manet. Linné (Linneaus) used the word and it is found as eary as 1745 in the Swedish language. Swedish very trivial trivia. :)

It’s sad how betta owners keep their poor fish in cups and small things. Half of the time, they at least put in a heater! My friend, who’s sister’s birthday party I went to, she had a betta in a 1 gallon tank, with no heater or plants. She said “My betta isn’t your average betta, he doesn’t need a heater” “I don’t put plants because they grow algae”. We recommended her to get a bigger tank, 5 gallons at least. At least she considered that. I’ve shown her my betta and previous betta in my 10gal. I even showed her a picture of my betta next to the heater (he loves doing that even when the water is the right temperature.). Nope. Still refuses to get a heater. Said the pet store person said he didn’t need a heater. Now, listen up. Her family is very close to mine, around 1 neighbourhood away. There’s one nearby pet store closest to us. I know the people working in the fish section. Cared very much for the fish, so helpful when my previous betta got swim bladder. I don’t think they told her that. I believe she decided herself that her betta doesn’t need a heater. She feeds her fish those cheap aqueon pellets. When I was first got Quartz, I fed him those too and wouldn’t understand why he’d spit them out. After 4 days of him not eating, we got smaller pellets as his mouth was small. She doesn’t care if it fits his mouth or not. It just falls. Now, you can imagine how angry I am at her. Hope her fish dies quickly so he’s free of suffering. He’s so pretty too. He’d look just like Quartz did with some love. (Sadly can’t get rid of her bc her parents are friends with mine)

I think for a first timer, 20g long are definitely a good option. Not that expensive compared to larger tanks, big enough that you can keep a good stocking, but small enough that they won't be an overwhelming amount of work. Just a good starting size before you get more knowledgeable about the hobby and/or decide to go larger.

@jem56363 жыл бұрын
I would also recommend a 20 long, or 40 gallon breeder. If you want goldfish, you can keep two or three fancy goldfish in the 40. An go for a light stocking! I'm sure you've heard that before but it really helps. And wherever you set it up, put ease of water change near the top of the list. When I was a kid the main reason my first tank didn't get enough water changes was how hard it was to get the water there.

I really want a goldfish tank, bu there's so much inaccurate, and inconsistent information I don't have a clue what's good, and what isn't anymore. People are saying 30 gallons is just right for two small ones, (runts, not stunts) people are saying 30 is too small for one. They'll choke on gravel, so you can't use that for substrate- but they'll die if they eat sand. They can cut themselves on certain stones, and grazing on ceratin plants will make them sick. The list goes on and on, it sucks. I don't think half the people know what they're talking about, but watching FTR gives me some confidence about these things, so that's great, I guess. Thanks Chris

I definitely get the vibes of Thor and star lord from Rapashy and Chris. Chris thinks he’s the leader/host but everyone knows it’s actually Rapashy

Quick question, I'm haveing plant troubles at the moment and was wondering if I should invest in API co2? I noticed lately that my Jungle val's have been rotting away. I used root tabs which help alot and i also keep the water temp to around 78deg, but now I'm staring to get longhair green algea on the leaves. Would you recommend me getting co2 for the plants?

I know that you don't do salt water tank but, I was wondering, if one had an irukandji jellyfish in their tank with other fishes, would it after a short time go understocked? do they do something to fish too?
