In this hike I explore a portion of The Overland Track in Tasmania which is rated as one of the best multi day hikes in Australia. I'm hiking South to North from Echo Point to (almost) Narcissus Hut which is normally hiked in the opposite direction on the 7th and final day of the multi day Overland hike. This is around 5km of the total 65km 7 day hike.
This section of the Overland track winds through a wild, ancient forest, under Eucalyptus regnans tree over 100 meters tall and sometimes pops out on the shores of Lake St Clair. Often hikers skip this day of the hike and catch the ferry from Narcissus Point hut to the end of the trail but I would highly recommend the extra day hike to take in the giant trees. It was a highlight of my Overland Track hike in March 2022 and as you can see in this video I liked it so much I went back and filmed the hike! (I ended up hiking 30 km to get to this section of forest just for the video!).
The trail was in a very wild state when I hiked in early September with lots of fallen trees and leaf debris across the trail which made navigation a little hard at times. This is the off season so I expect a lot of trail maintenance to occur closer to the popular hiking season from October to May.
I hope the camera captures just how big the Eucalyptus regnans trees are in the second half of the hike. They are incredible! Whilst their base doesn't immediately make you think they are too big the trunk just keeps extending into the sky and meets a huge canopy of branches. Along the trail are lots of fallen giants which give you a nice up close experience with the entire tree. I can only imagine the colossal sound these trees make when coming down in a storm.
If you are looking to hike the overland track then give this video a watch as it captures lots of the environments and trail types you can expect to see when hiking the full multi day hike in tasmania.

Here some more information about the Overland Track from the park and wildlife website:
"The Overland Track is Australia's premier alpine walk. This exhilarating and life-changing journey attracts walkers from across the globe. Beginning at the iconic Cradle Mountain and ending at Australia’s deepest lake - Lake St Clair, this 65 kilometre, six-day trek takes you through the heart of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, part of the magnificent Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
Your journey will be physically demanding, emotionally challenging and scenically spectacular. This is a landscape of glacially carved valleys, ancient rainforests, fragrant eucalypt forests, golden buttongrass moorlands and beautiful alpine meadows. Optional side-trips take you to cascading waterfalls and mountain summits, including Tasmania’s highest peak, Mount Ossa (1617 m).
The Overland Track is about you and your time in the wilderness, so while six days is the average time taken to walk the track, you can create your own pace depending on how many rest days or side-trips you wish to enjoy.
Most walkers finish their journey at Narcissus Hut at the head of Lake St Clair where they board a small privately run ferry (prior booking required) to reach the Lake St Clair Visitor Centre at Cynthia Bay. Or you might choose to walk the 17.5 km length of the lake through rainforest to the visitor centre, extending your journey by a day.
Almost half of the track is above 1000 metres in elevation on exposed plateaus in a remote area. Thorough preparation and good gear is essential.
It’s no wonder the Overland Track has secured its reputation as one of the world’s great wilderness bushwalks. "

I really like forest vegetation like this, especially when it is interspersed with the sound of running water. The place is definitely cool and will reduce fatigue while hiking. Very good sharing, dear.... 👍🏻😊
