The Canyons in Carbon have left an everlasting impression on me the same way pursuits did in Most Wanted. Other games just don't capture that feeling of adrenaline brought on by a one on one duel down a dark, narrow, and winding roadway where one wrong move can spell your doom.

7:54 Something REALLY cool about canyon races that a lot of people don't know about is that they are based on a real life type of street racing: touge races from Japan. In real life touge races (unlike in Initial D :v) you duel against a opponent in a mountain road twice, once leading and once following, and because the roads are usually very narrow, overtaking is generally not allowed to prevent excessive amounts of crashes, and instead the winner is decided by who got a bigger gap when leading. Carbon's canyon events are just a gamefied version of that, with a precise score to dictate the winner instead of people watching the race and telling everyone how big of a gap you had

Most Wanted shone brightest in the police chases, but Carbon's best part was most definitely the Canyons. They were the ultimate proving ground of your driving skills in-game. Or alternatively, how well you could handle the Corvette in the turns.

Palmont is the great city to live in over the Need for Speed franchise. For street racing, for drifting, and even for canyon races, these are the very good events around Palmont to die for. But as for me, Bayview has been the best of the best throughout almost 2 decades. I really like the ways to not only have both Kanjo races with tuned Honda Civics and Underground Racing Leagues with track cars, but drift events with import tuner cars.

Funny little trivia: in Spain, videogames titles don’t usually get translated (with some exceptions, like Pokémon), and NfS games are no different. Underground is called Underground, Most Wanted is Most Wanted, etc. However, NfS Carbon was translated to NfS Carbono. The change doesn’t seem something big, and the meaning is the same. This was due to the fact that, in Spanish, “carbón” actually means “coal”, while “carbono” is the translation of “carbon”. Would have been strange to have this game called NfS Coal (but kinda fitting, tho).

"This video is probably longer than the entire game." You got me good with that one. Thanks for a hearty laugh. Btw note how the music in Colin's intro video ends with a surprised "What?!" It's like even the game itself was expecting more. Speaking of the game itself it's such a frustratingly mixed bag. For example, like you joked about it's a short game which in theory makes it more replayable however its design decisions work against this. The car tier system severely restricts your choices from the very start, gone is the fantasy of taking your little starter car and upgrading it until the end, now you have to switch and that means you get a lot less cars to choose from. Then there's the card unlock system. Certain parts, vinyls and even cars are locked and cannot be unlocked in the career mode. If you want them you have to play the challenge series. What this means is that the optimal way to play the game (if you want more customization in the career) is to complete the entire challenge series BEFORE you start the main game and that requirement completely wrecks the pacing for any returning player. Speaking of customization it's great in many ways but baffling in some others. It's night time but you don't get neons? Now there's no decals on front and rear windows and decals in general are of such low quality that unless you make them giant you can barely read them half the time. You want to rep most of your parts on a door? Good luck. Then there's the cops. They were the shining jewel of MW but in Carbon they're made irrelevant to the point where the game would've been better off without them. Even the story presentation lacks that over the top charming characteristic from MW where everything was just a little bit overdramatic. Lastly, the eyebrows. Is it me or does every actor in the game have fake eyebrows? I noticed that a while back and now I can never unsee it.

I shed a few tears watching this, Carbon was the last piece to the OG series developed by BlackBox with utmost care... what ever happened during the process of making of it and after that... black box truly lost it magic. (I'm looking at you greedy shareholders and all the C titled in charge at the time.) I forgot about ProStreet... it was never my cup of tea, but it is a solid game despite having an identity crisis. Like they could've titled it as "ProStreet" and add an extra line: "from the makers of NFS Series". All I know is that era is gone and NFS will never be the same again. Oh btw amazing video as always BlueTag ( ̄︶ ̄)↗

Out of all the Black Box-era games I played growing up, Carbon was the one that disappointed me the most. I tried multiple times to play this game to end credits within the last few years, and every single time, I found myself putting it down about two-thirds of the way through and never touching it again. And it’s due to…well…a lot of stuff. But the biggest one for me was and still is the handling model they used for the drift events; The fact that it’s so radically different from the normal handling model used for the other events in the game, combined with the fact that (at least on the PS2 version) the score requirements needed to get first place are absurdly stringent, means that I was not only never able to become acclimated to the different handling model, but also that getting through these particular events was a serious chore, regardless of what car or class I tried to use. (This goes double for the Canyon Drift events, where you now have the threat of falling off the road itself to contend with.) Speaking of cars, though, I feel like the car selection in this game is…*incongruent* with the design of the rest of the game, especially when we’re talking about super and hypercars like the Konigsegg Agera, Audi R8, Lamborghini Murcielago, etc. They all tend to be so fast that by the end of the game, navigating narrow alleyways and tight bends - both on the city streets and in the canyons - becomes a lot more difficult than it really should be. And unlike in the previous games - the Underground games in particular - the heavier and stiffer primary handling model used for the cars doesn’t really allow you to make sudden changes to your direction of movement that would let you avoid slamming into a wall as easily. (And upgrading/tuning the cars doesn’t really solve this problem either.) None of this is to say that I didn’t find *any* redeeming qualities in Carbon. In fact, there are quite a few. For one, the new Crew Racing mechanics - though a little half-baked in some regards - made a lot of the standard race events more enjoyable to play. And since each Crew Member has their own unique perks that you get from having them accompany you in the races, it gives you a legitimate incentive to really think about who you want rolling with you on the streets of Palmont. I also really enjoyed the new Autosculpt feature for car customization, and I’m upset that it didn’t get carried over into future NFS games post-Black Box era. It would’ve been a great way to add in-depth customization to cars *without* the devs needing to spend half their budget on brand licensing deals. Lastly, there are the Canyon Duels, which…as pretty much everyone else has noted…really are the highlight of the game. The tight bends and narrow roads, combined with the weak guard rails that constantly remind you how close you are to falling off the track itself, and all of it wrapped up with a soundtrack that words like “chaotic”, “tense”, and “suspenseful” can only barely describe…it’s still a high that the NFS franchise - and even the entirety of the racing game genre as a whole - has yet to really top. (Though I will say that the difficulty in terms of points lost relative to how close/far away your opponent is could’ve been turned down a little.)

3:28 i actually find scouts to be the most useful out of all crew members, but not for their intended purpose. blockers usually dont catch up with me and drafters often mess up in their driving which has me mess up too, but scouts are usually the fastest since they know all the shortcuts and they often even get ahead of me and win the race for me

one thing that a lot of people miss is that in this game the performance of your rivals even the bosses are adjusted to what you're driving. so if you're driving a stock 68 camaro darius r8 is going to perform like a stock 68 camaro too. last time i played this game i got an evo as soon as it got unlocked and finished the whole game with no real effort with it, i didn't even installed nos on it but since it had superior handling it made all canyon races a piece of cake

Carbon is still my favourite and I replay it from time to time. It's absolutely not perfect nor is it the best one from an objective standpoint, but I still love it. After I finished Most Wanted, I used to have high expectations on Carbon. While it didn't fully meet my expectation, it's still has strong point for me: THE MUSIC for each type of car (like the tuner & exotics one are my favs, canyon battle really giving me intense feeling), talk about canyon battle, it's one of my favorite part of the game, reminds me touge battle from Initial D. Autosculpt is nice addition. I agree with you on the physics, it's feels more heavy and I don't dig the differentiations handling between each type of car but it's understandable to give more charactersistc to them (I mean, Muscle car is fit for Drag race that not even in the game!). Drift mechanic kinda weird to in my experience. It's like just drifting in mobile games back in the day. The crew mechanics is alright. But I think it could be better. Plot/Storywise, yea.. it's kinda anticlimactic. That douchbag just get away with it. And what pisses me off is WE DON'T GET THE AUDI in the career mode. It could be make sense that we get the revenge for our stolen prize money by took the Audi that (probably) bought with that money. Also no M3 GTR in career mode? I thought we could use it more in Carbon, but no. It's just ended in prologue. 😞 Anyway. Great video Blue.

@CyanRooper
@CyanRooper Жыл бұрын
This game definitely needed at least an extra year of development time. It had potential to be as good, if not better than Most Wanted 2005. IMO they shouldn't have reduced the money players got every time they redid races (500 is simply too low a reward for winning races) since players are forced to redo them due to rival crews attacking territories. The reward money should have been the same as when you first do those races every time you redo them. That would have made it easier to buy cars and upgrades. Remember how you had to beat the previous crew leaders in their new cars in canyon events before getting the chance to race Darius? They should have done that for every crew in the game. They should have made the player race against 2 or 3 sub-bosses of each crew (one of them being one of the members of the crew that you can hire later) and after beating them give the players 3 reward cards to choose from with one of them being a pink slip to the sub-boss's car. This would've allowed players to have more canyon races (which are the best parts of the game) and the opportunity to have more cars added to their garage. The highways in the game felt underutilized to me. They should have had more races on the highways and they should have added drag races back to the game and have them set on the highways. They also could have introduced a game mode called Bounty Hunter where you play as Cross as he takes down racers in Palmont to collect the bounties on their heads. There would have been Hot Pursuit style races where you as Cross have to chase down one or more racers with bounties while they are racing several other street racers and smash their cars until they get totaled to collect the bounties without totaling your own car as the racers fight back. The players could even use the EMP thing that the police used in the flashback cutscene to make taking racers down easier as well as spike strips dropped from the back of Cross's car and they could also smash up the other racers to receive bonus cash from the Palmont City Police Department while crashing into traffic cars would reduce the bounty as they would be fined for traffic collisions. The money earned from collecting bounties would be used to fix Cross's car as well buy new ones to use, including the bonus cars like the Zonda, CCX, 911 GT3 etc. The final Bounty Hunter race would have Cross take down Darius as he leaves Palmont in a Canyon Duel with final cutscene showing Cross tossing Darius in his car and telling him, "and for the last time, it's CROSS" and then slamming the door shut in his face.

I think it would have been a good way to flesh out Cross even more as he was (up until that point) the only cop to be given any kind of personality and character before Need for Speed Heat showed up plus this was the first game to ever show cops using EMPs to take down racers (albeit in a flashback sequence) so they could have turned that into a mechanic to be used in game.

NFS: MW is to MW2 (2009) as NFS Carbon is to MW3 (2011): the predecessors are better but there's something about the successors that keep people's attention. I go back to this game with the R34 customized like Brians in 2F2F with the manual transmission getting chased by cops (not as much tire screeching, IYKYK)

for me this is the BEST in the franchise, the only deffect is the progression and the time to beat that is too short, if that had another area to beat one more boss it will be more enjoyable, but THIS IS PERFECTION

I thought this video is about a game that I never seen because of the tilte lol. Anyways, good video still. Remember I always set my tuning to drift and acceleration and also with manual shift. Sometimes the car did not even loose speed while drifting in the corners haha. Definitely was an OP build.

In my opinion tho, Darius should drive a Bugatti Veyron in the final race. His R8 concept is fast, but imagine beating him when he drives a Veyron. It would be one of the hardest races ever. Not just his circuit race, he should've added more races like Sprint Races.

Palmont is the next city I'd love to live in (second only to Bayview)... Bayview is my favourite for the cozyness and the "stuck to the 2000s prosperity" vibe it gives, but Palmont is simply a city that looks well thought of when it was designed (I mean if it would be a real city). The buildings are large and by that, I mean take any car model and place it next to an office window - It's almost double the size of a rl window and the building overall is maybe triple its real life counterpart. So take the roads! Although they have lots of turns (not as many as Most Wanted), some of them are big and open, even in areas with small narrow streets, they look somehow wider than anything that exists irl... I guess whoever works and lives there have solved their parking problems and I'm guessing that if it was a real life city, it would be truly one of these "Top 10 most resident - friendly cities around the world " I also think it looks a lot like a combination of Ih Ju and Dalian City somehow, especially when moving outside of the city center and the construction zone and going to Fortuna... btw Tag, which of all these cities would you choose to live in? 😃

Most wanted was best NFS for me. That said I spend way more time in carbon. Night and neon and some rain is my thing. This game had everything for me except the length. Fast forward to future, NFS 2015 gave me some kind of same vibes so after years of being away from gaming I decided to buy a PS4 and I gotta say despite all criticisms around that game it's my favourite ghost NFS, by miles I might add. I'm yet to see a new NFS or maybe tdu to convince me to buy ps5.

I was never able to play MW since my copy was borked, so instead I stuck to playing Carbon and Underground 1 & 2. First time I beat Carbon was with a near-maxed Evo IX. That last race was panic inducing, taking several retries especially on the canyon section, but I still managed to beat it. Never took care of the challenge mode tho :3

The oversteer/understeer options were flipped? That would explain why most exotic cars were undrivable for me, I always tried to tune away their understeer! I had the game on Wii and played it so much when I was a kid, I remember being upset when I found I didn't get Darius' car in career mode, but I absolutely loved driving around listening to the soundtrack (especially ‘are friends electric?’). I got the PC version when I was a bit older, but I ended up loosing interest in it, most races were too easy to be fun for me by then…Might've been more fun if I'd known how to tune the cars to oversteer, though. I'll play around with that if I ever get the game again. Thanks for making this video, it's a nice game to get reminded of!

There were only two things I really liked about this game... Canyon races/duels and customization. Palmont was an abysmal city layout, I found myself getting stuck in pointless loops in each area that got you pretty much nowhere and the map itself extremely limited the actual speed you could maintain. Heck, even the original UG definitely has a better city layout and you can't even free roam it... Ok, there's a third, that main menu theme and menu are just ASMR masterpieces.

Nope. It doesn't make logical sense. When he flees Palmont City, he got rid of Darius's Toyota Supra MK4 to be discreet and avoid suspicion from the cops. Then sometimes later, he bought his own BMW M3 E46 GTR before going to Rockport. The reason why it's a nonsense is because the Underground saga happens in a different continuity and the main characters of the UG and MW/Carbon saga are separate persons with their own goals. Plus, Adrian Vershinin which is the scenario writer of NFS MW 2005 confirmed that the Underground saga and NFS MW 2005/NFS Carbon aren't connected to eachother and are totally from separate continuities. That means the MC of Underground games and the MC of NFS MW 2005/NFS Carbon are 2 different persons.

I absolutely love Carbon, even without nostalgia bias, i love not only its gameplay, graphics, soundtrack, variety and story (despite the duration), but also the clever ways it circumvents the restraints of deadline. For example, the map needed to be entirely new, but they couldn't make one as big as in MW, so they just made it smaller (like, no shit Sherlock) but the clever part is that to make it feel bigger, they reduced the speed, but a slower car in a map as full of wide corners as MW, it would be boring, so the map is littered with corners. Now we're only left with sense of speed as a problem. Don't worry! The visual treatment makes use of light in a similar way to Blur (albeit less intensely). Also the motion blur, wind effects and camera shake were amplified, making it feel alright with the graphical settings as intended Camera shake might be an annoying thing to some, but imagina a hyper-stiff camera at Carbon's speed
@minaco2772
@minaco2772 Жыл бұрын
for the sense of speed we can just use extended cams. or a mod that moves the camera values of MW to Carbon that helps a lot to make the game feel faster.
