Mountain Fisher, My old mate Jack Dog is now around 17 years old. He was 8 years old when my soulmate passed due to aggressive brain cancer. Jack mum was Tina's girl and the father was my boy, so Jack was family before he was born. Jack was always Tina's dog. He listened to me and did what I asked, but his Alpha was Tina. She could look at him and he knew what he was being asked to do. Tina would talk to him like he was a human and he listened to her every word. The three of us lived in a 4WD for about four years or so and he's had many the adventure. Hiking through remote forests, rock climbing (that was interesting), caving and generally being by our side on most journeys. He's a lot slower nowadays and his back legs are not what they used to be. He still chases a ball, albeit at a slow trot rather than a sprint, and I have to lift him in and out of my bus because the steps are too steep for him. But he's still happy and has a zest for life, so we'll see how the next few years go. He's a good boy and has been by my side for most of the past 17 years. Yep, like a son. So anyway, since 2011 it's been me and him really. It's going to be a hard day when he goes, but I'm trying to steel myself.

@@BradGryphonn My sympathies Mountain Fisher and my heart goes out to you and your fellow coming future Brad. I went through the same thing with my mother. She had a 8 y/o rescued cat when she passed away prematurely from breast cancer. I don’t consider myself a cat person per say (definitely a dog person) , but I kept, cared and loved that little guy for another thirteen and a half years. During that time he became to be trained to nearly like a dog, Lol. Come, sit, speak, play dead, fetch, “hi-five”, kisses, no, stay, go away and eventually “roll over” on command. He lived to nearly 22 years old. It was tough losing him after so many years together, like any loved pet... but the losing of the hugely significant emotional connection to my mother, made it all just that more difficult to process.

@David P. Sorry man.. Always keep children and animals away from manual work.. I lock my cat in a bed room when I suspect that what I do might endanger her our she has tendencies to go out of the apartment door. To honor your cat I suggest you adopt another cat. It is also a good way to break any complexes that might have formed due to this accident. My condolence, pal.

There is an official Sandrin KZbin video on sharpening their knives, you can look it up easily . Basically, they use diamond lapping films starting with 30 microns, then 9 microns, and finally 3 microns. Seemed pretty straightforward and not too difficult. My condolences for your loss. Excellent review and we are so glad you like the Torino and sorry for your loss. Our furry friends are part of our family too! The Torino has been a hit so far and we were really trying hard to do something different. And congrats on sharpening TC, your method is very effective and we have seen success with grit as large as 30 microns to make serious progress on chips and nicks and then working to 9-3-1 to hone and polish the edge! If there aren’t any nicks in the blade 9-3-1 is great to return the cutting edge without having to work too hard. Thanks for all you do for the knife community.

I know this is a very late response but I want to express my condolences for your loss. We lost our golden doodle right at the beginning of the pandemic. He was 15 which was a good stretch for an 85 pound dog. I owe that dog my life, as he kept me just barely alive when I tried to take my own life a few years back. This may not be your cup of tea but I will pray for you and your family. Thank you so much for all of the great testing and content you have put out. It definitely helped occupy my mind when I was going through the worst part of the grieving process.

Really cool , working in a factory fro 40 years had a couple of jobs where you cut hundreds if not thousands of cuts in rubber in 12 hrs. Standard fair was a course stone on a handle acerbic rod a homemade strop and some people got their hand on tungsten carbide about the size of a crayon. It worked well to keep a razor edge. You learned to sharpen fast and often. A dull knife was murder.

Tungsten Carbide in a Cobalt matrix : WC/Co. The cobalt makes it less expensive (more possible) to form the solid pieces, so most carbide teeth on circular saw blades are from WC/Co in small bits and then welded on to the blade or tool. The big issue is temperature. The cobalt lets you sinter (compress hot powder) WC at much lower temperatures. You can't have much/any oxygen at these still rather high temperatures and probably no nitrogen. Real molten tungsten would just want to burn, so it would also have to be in an exotic atmosphere, driving up the price again. There was an old SciFi story where a stranded alien was enlisting help from a sympathetic earthling engineer to fix his ship so he could leave. Everything was going great until the alien needed a large part made of cast tungsten. The engineer was scrambling to find a substitute because at the time we didn't have any casting mold material that could withstand molten tungsten. Today we just barely might be able to do it with our best weird composite ceramics, but really just theoretical, not practical. So tungsten processing is full of temperature dodges, usually employing some alloying metals to bring the temperature down and sintering so you never have to fully melt the tungsten stuff. This is one big piece of WC/Co, so that is challenging enough. Apparently the Co is also part of making the blade less brittle. And how they manage to sinter to a non-brittle WC/Co would be a great story if they could afford to tell it. Blade warping prevention is probably another good one. Of course straight WC is significantly harder [1880 knoop] than WC/Co [1500 knoop] or better yet W2C [2800 knoop!], but the blade would be even more expensive and probably too brittle. BTW, I used Knoop hardness because none of the Rockwell scales work on these extremely hard materials. For reference, a good alumina stone is about 1700 Knoop and diamond is 7000. Cubic boron nitride (the great white hope) is supposedly about 4000.

The ancients believed that your beloved companion would guide you to your place in the afterlife. A dog knows only unconditional love and loyalty. As they were speaking, a dog that had been lying asleep raised his head and pricked up his ears. This was Argos, whom Odysseus had bred before setting out for Troy, but he had never had any enjoyment from him. In the old days he used to be taken out by the young men when they went hunting wild goats, or deer, or hares, but now that his master was gone he was lying neglected on the heaps of mule and cow dung that lay in front of the stable doors till the men should come and draw it away to manure the great close; and he was full of fleas. As soon as he saw Odysseus standing there, he dropped his ears and wagged his tail, but he could not get close up to his master. When Odysseus saw the dog on the other side of the yard, dashed a tear from his eyes without Eumaios seeing it, and said:'Eumaeus, what a noble dog that is over yonder on the manure heap: his build is splendid; is he as fine a fellow as he looks, or is he only one of those dogs that come begging about a table, and are kept merely for show?''This dog,' answered Eumaios, 'belonged to him who has died in a far country. If he were what he was when Odysseus left for Troy, he would soon show you what he could do. There was not a wild beast in the forest that could get away from him when he was once on its tracks. But now he has fallen on evil times, for his master is dead and gone, and the women take no care of him. Servants never do their work when their master's hand is no longer over them, for Zeus takes half the goodness out of a man when he makes a slave of him.'So saying he entered the well-built mansion and made straight for the riotous pretenders in the hall. But Argos passed into the darkness of death, now that he had fulfilled his destiny of faith and seen his master once more after twenty years.-Homer, Odyssey, Book 17, lines 290-327

As far as Ada goes, if you're down for getting another pet, maybe a cat is a good idea if she's socialized. Side note: l don't give a damn that Cedric was "just a dog", what matters is how you feel and if you feel sad because of your loss, you're sad. The green chromium oxide bar may be hard enough to strop (2955 knoop). So your Tormek power strop wheel with diamond paste or green chromium abrasive may work. I have no idea if there would be overheating/chipping issues, so be careful. There is no iron in that blade, so it is a new world.

Watching Ada was a little heartbreaking. She always seemed so aloof, but she seems lost without her bud. Hope everyone is getting along okay, I know that had to be rough on the whole family. Good insight on sharpening tungsten carbide. The knife itself looks interesting too (a first for me with Sandrin, their other knives have been meh in design). I like a lot about it, but would prefer if the milling was internal and I don't understand what they did with the sharpening choil and the weird unsharpened bit behind it. The finish on the blade looks really cool in pictures/video, I'm curious to see one in person.

So mad I had to return mine. The lock kept malfunctioning and it lost detent while it was in my pocket twice. If one of the body screws or the pocket clip screw wasn't tightened to the correct tension the blade would lose detent and swing freely. I really loved the knife but obviously didn't trust the lock at that point. I'm sure I probably just got a lemon because I haven't heard of anyone else having that problem. Condolences buddy, losing a dog is tuff

that sounds super weird given the lock design, do you think it was missing the spring??
@jonr1510
@jonr1510 3 жыл бұрын
@@utrak no, the spring was in it. I think the little cut out that holds the spring in place was just a bit too big or not milled out all the way. I could hear the spring slipping around inside. It was weird

A point is reached where time sharpening the super steels or in this case carbide takes more time then just sharpening simple steel once a day.

It's not unusual to miss a dog. My favorite dog died 11 years ago, and I'm still upset. I'll get over it, soon. (?)

Electric chainsaw makes so much sense. Unless you're planning on cutting down trees in the wilderness, I feel like a petro chainsaw isn't necessary. Sorry to hear about Ada. She'll snap out of it soon, I hope! 😃

You can actually start rougher than that as per an official Sandrin sharpening video about tungsten carbide - they start at 30 micron diamond film, then 9 etc.

About the sharpening: So according to some quick research, Tungsten Carbide is the same hardness as Ceramics (Alumina/Aluminium-Oxide), a 9 on the Mohs Scale. This means that both Diamonds and Silicon-Carbide "should" be able to abrade it. Silicon-Carbide isn`t "much" harder, so I would stick to Diamond, which is like 2 points higher instead of 1. The Atoma Diamond films would probably do fairly well, Venev Diamond Bonded stones should also work, I`d be more careful with Electroslag Plated Diamond Plates like the DMT or Eze-Lap variety because in their case the weakness of the plating might cause them to shed their grit when abrading Tungsten-Cabide. There`s a good chance that whatever abrasive you use would turn into a fairly fast consumable when sharpening Tungsten-Carbide, I`d have to test that, but I am confident it can be done by the end user or a professional.

Very interesting. Have you ever used a Shosui Takeda knife?? I’ve got a couple and perhaps similarly to the Tungsten Carbide, they’re the only knives I own that I can legitimately resharpen repeatedly with only diamond loaded strops (1M and .25M). They’re 63-64 HRC in Aogami Super Blue and will carve wood for hours and still shave. You can find the Kogatana for around $160 - highly recommended!

Interesting results with this material. It is always much nicer to be able to get real use out of an item, and be able to restore it, so to say, instead of just looking at it. That can always be done, that is the easy part. :o) Understandable feelings. We lost our dog after 15 years, many years back now, but he was ill, unable to be cured, so we had the wet take care of it, gave him peace, so to say, in the morning. We lived in a smaller town in Jutland, Denmark, at the time, and my father had to drive to work afterwards. This town is split in two, so he had to drive over a small bridge, that can open for yachts and so, to get there, and it was about to open, as he approached. Instead of stopping "normally", in the right position on the road, he drove past the blinking lights and so, and stopped the car directly on the bridge itself, completely confused, not noticing the mistake at all, so the operator had to come down and ask him to drive on, so that he could actually open the bridge. So he told me, at least, my father, after homecoming at the evening. Just a little story about this kind of situation, it can be quite hard hitting, actually, with these animals. Anyway, nice day, no matter what.

I have similar concerns with my Rocksteads. I want to, and do use them, but I live in, if not fear, but at least trepidation that eventually even 67 Rockwell knives will need sharpened, and I can only, realistically strop them. I think you hit on the same plan that Rockstead recommend. They say ‘strop’ with a denim strop impregnated with metal polish. Ie you are polishing it sharp, in the traditional Japanese sword style, rather than the western ‘grind’ style. A thought though, wouldn’t it make sense to strop it back often, rather than letting it dull? Still using the KME 1 micron obviously.
