I’m 67 years old and grew up in a neighborhood filled with WWII veterans who were my friends’ fathers. When there was a block party (in the early to mid 1960’s) all the Moms and Dads would bring out their big band music vinyl, and would blare it and dance to it all night long! None of us kids could believe OUR PARENTS could jitter-bug that much AT THEIR AGE!! (They were actually only in their late 30’s and early 40’s but to us, they were old Mom and Dad…..until we saw the jitterbug queens and kings!!). ❤❤❤ I still tear up whenever I think back on those memories. 😢

My Mom and Dad danced to "Moonlight Serenade" at their fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration in 1990. A few years later, when I moved in to care for my Mom after Dad passed away, she and I danced to Glenn Miller every Saturday in the living room. When she was in a nursing home with dementia, which held her for at least fifteen years, we danced again to the tunes as we hummed, until she could no longer walk, or dance, or sing. What warm and wonderful memories Glenn Miller's music evokes! It will always lump my throat!

My first recollection of Glenn Miller and his Orchestra was a rainy evening. I was five, sitting in front bench seat of our car, between mom and dad. Dad had the radio tuned in to a station nearby as we drove into Los Angeles. I thought that the music was beautiful. It happened to be Moonlight Serenade. Back in those days patriotism was pretty high. It was the fifties and the future was bright and hopeful. This is how I first experienced the magic of Glenn Miller and his Orchestra. Somehow that music was a part of a larger picture in those days, summing up our love of life...

He witnessed the war front coming over his village as a twelve year old and the American soldiers bringing the children chewing gum and chocolate and peace in the end. When he was grown up he bought a vinyl LP with Glenn Miller's greatest Hits. He often listened to it when I was a child. I listened to this music for myself when I was a teenager. Now I'm a grandmom myself, my grandson's father (my youngest son) is having his 25th birthday tomorrow and has been a soldier himself. Sometimes I think that is strange, because he lived in USSR, but he not just listened jazz, but also palyed this music. In the piano, drums and guitar. Already I am adult and now, also love to listen Glenn Miller or Benny Goodman. Unfortunately I can't play these melodies on the piano or other music musical instrument for my grandphather, but I turn on this or another videowith a good music, and he could remember his young years. More than one year, I lost him. And now, when I listen this music, remember my dear grandphather. Sometimes it's very difficult and even now, I'm writing this comment and cry.

Just sitting here listening to Glenn Miller's stuff. Trying to picture my Dad who served in the Navy, stuck in Iceland working as a radio relay operator from 1942 thru 1944. Miller apparently was top in the charts. Getting a feel of my Dads life at 20 years of age or so stuck in that lonely place. Was a completely different world then from today, just 80 years later. This was what he rocked out on, the American sound track of World War Two.
