I have a great ambivalence towards Jeremy Clarkson. He was 100% wrong for punching a Top Gear producer and deserved to be fired from his job. However, I support 100% his decision to punch Piers Morgan. And I would encourage others to do likewise, whenever the opportunity presents itself.

So to attack him like that was very undignified, and quite sophomoric. One final point: In the U.S. the "Left" has a lot to learn about consumable imagery. Someone like Osman, should be on a list of people (Entertainers) who DO NOT go on political humor attacks like what we witnessed here because - physically - he looks like the image of what Right Wing people associate with the Left. "Ivory Tower Elitist" is a phrase that's thrown around a lot among people on the right. The Left has to learn to put attractive and neutral faces forward because as juvenile as it sounds; it works. I don't know what Osman does on British Television - like what shows he's on - but Clarkson is a world famous celebrity. Translation: People love him. Top Gear as BBC's highest grossing show according to 60 Minutes. Additionally they stated that TopGear brought in 350 million viewers world wide. That viewership brought in a huge amount of revenue streaming into the BBC that enabled them to underwrite a lot of projects they may not have had the money for otherwise. Osman may be talented - I wouldn't know - but what I do know is that his name does not ring out like Clarkson so he should have known better.

@@kettle_of_chris You do understand what the word 'satire' means, don't you?
@kettle_of_chris3 жыл бұрын
@@lidbass (sighs) oh for fucks-sake! There's Satire, and then there's being verbally abusive. Clearly Osman has skills in the Satire department as demonstrated on plenty of other shows in which he was a guest, or even better still; as host. The exchange between Clarkson and Osman that included Osman's remark that Clarkson's new show was [to be aired] on "Amazon Past-Their-Prime". Okay YES that was funny and YES it was satire. I didn't think I had to clarify or acknowledge that first before making the point that Osman is not famous like Clarkson. He may be popular in the UK and I am not saying he's a bad guy, or lacking in talent, it's just that he's (at best) a C LIST guy attacking an A LIST guy. Yes I said; Attacking because while what he said was funny, it was mean. And you would have to be blind, or irretrievably stupid not to see that Osman's tone and demeanor while he made that statement clearly demonstrated a pe-existing dislike for Clarkson. Whether it's motivated by Clarkson's politics, I wouldn't know and I don't care. People around the world love Clarkson. Myself included. In the mid 2000's something like 300 million people tuned into to TopGear. Clarkson is mobbed by fans (like Hammond and May) wherever he goes and this guy (Osman) thinks he's got the CV to attack Clarkson like that? I don't think so. Osman didn't score any points with that remark. Maybe he didn't lose any either. Anyway who cares.
@lidbass3 жыл бұрын
@@kettle_of_chris Ah, so you DON'T understand what satire is. Osman is perfectly right to make fun of Clarkson, since satire is laughing up, not down. Are you really suggesting that Osman should have kept quiet just because a number of people find Clarkson funny? Or because he earns more money than him? Right, so none of us can ever have a laugh at Elon Musk ever again. Got you. In case you didn't know, Osman was a hugely recognised producer and creator of some very popular programmes for the BBC, and only stepped out into presenting because they couldn't find someone to do a pilot, he did it and turned out to be very good. So, while I won't pretend that he has made as much money for the BBC (since that seems to be your yardstick) he certainly has created more programmes with more varied content than Clarkson. And is therefore in a position to criticise him. I would also point out that Clarkson was perfectly capable of coming back to Osman - which he did - and also came on the show at a moment when he knew he was going to get ripped to shreds by all the panel. Which he did. He was actually quite brave to do so, and you should be concentrating on that, not on a few witty barbs thrown out by a panel member. Whether Osman likes Clarkson or not is beside the point. His job there and then was to take the mickey out of Clarkson, which he did to great effect apparently since it's managed to piss you off so much. If you want some better examples of preconceived dislike, check out the episode when Johnson presents and see how they have a go at him, or any of the episodes where Farage appears (while I dislike him utterly I have to say that he does take the jokes against him in good spirit) or the wonderful moment when Hislop has a go at Johnny Mercer (which is not even funny!), or even worse when the whole lot of them spend thirty minutes ripping Angus Deayton . Then compare those to the relatively light treatment that Clarkson got. If you are simply saying that Osman went to far, well I would even agree with you. It would have been much more effective had he just got out a couple of gags and then moved on. But there you go. It was the heat of the moment, and it's easy with hindsight. But if you are really trying to say that Osman shouldn't say anything because Clarkson earns more money than you, well I can only reply that you must be an American. With, of course, a grin on my face, because that is satire. Have a good day, y'all.
