0:41 This is actually a trick that my friend taught me. You’re able to hold items behind you by holding down the throw button, and if you have a bomb, shell, or banana behind you it stops an incoming shell from hitting you

What I think happened in that clip is that Martyn let go of the BobOmb at just the right moment for the shell to hit it _after_ he let go, which meant it exploded far enough away from him that he wasn't caught in the blast.
