You're not actually wrong. He stopped being able to learn things regularly at the age of 10 when his mum committed suicide. He is as intelligent as any his age, he just isn't as knowledgeable, and at some point he must have realised that this can come off as charming when combined with his looks, so he likely plays it up even more, to be likeable exactly the way Joey Tribianni is on Friends.

He disrupted a whole episode once and even got Dara in on the act. Look up 'scenes we'd like to see' compilations, they're hilarious. Just like to end with a Thank You to our American friends for 'friends,' 'big bang theory' and 'how I met your mother,' all of which have humour and pathos due to the ensemble cast members familial affinities!
