A great villain yes....but let us give credit where credit is due. Ian McDiarmid is an amazing actor. He played an extremely old Emperor in Return of the Jedi in 1983. Then, sixteen years later, he was cast to play the exact same character but thirty years younger! He did this so effortlessly that when watching Epidsodes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, the progression looks so natural and seamless. Truly amazing!

Must not have been a very good teacher, though. The whole idea behind the "rule of two" was that the master would train his apprentice to one day kill him and take his place. If I were Luke, that would have been more motivation for me to say no thanks to his offer.

That's when Luke's persistent defiance started to make Sidious loose his cool. The cracks are just starting to show, and Sidious knows something is wrong. This young man does not show fear or respect toward him. No one has stood up to him since, who, Yoda? And when Luke addresses him mockingly as 'your highness', it's a slap in the face: 'your highness' may be appropriate for addressing lesser royalty like princes and princesses, but never for a king and certainly not an emperor. Really outstanding performances by Ian McDiarmid and Mark Hamill in that scene. Of course, McDiarmid went on to do more amazing work as Palpatine/Sidious

Yea and the black cloak isn't what most people think of when they think of an emperor. Most think of either militaristic uniforms like of German Empire emperors, battle armor or Roman togas of the Roman emperors, or the glamorous robes of Chinese and Japanese emperors. Imagine if Palpatine wore a uniform similar to Grand Moff Tarkin, Palpatine wouldn't be as iconic as a villain I don't think. Palpatine just looks so out of place as a position as emperor that it just works in an unexpected way. With the Force lightning even more so, nobody expected that for their first time watching that at the theater.
@UToobUsername0111 ай бұрын
@@GothRailfanNope. He is symbolic of a dark wizard which is necessary to keep the fantasy element of Star Wars. Luke is a white knight saving a princess against a dark knight (darth vader) who is manipulated by a dark wizard using mind control spells (psionic powers known as the force). Assisting Luke is a white mage (yoda) and old monk (obiwan who trained vader) who use white magic to bring light to the galaxy to counter the dark. Light wakes Darth from ignorance to fight mind control to fufil a prophecy of the chosen one who defeats the dark wizard. The costume choices are intentional because its a fantasy world. Han Solo the smuggler looks like a cowboy to act as our gateway into the mystical world of star wars because like us he lives in modern time and doesn't believe in magick, preferring to trust his sidearm like modern day people. The magick of the wizard is clearly more powerful than machines and battle droids which are the local peasant workers with low status and low IQ. Star Wars is also a religious movie since the khights adhere to moral codes to never betray the light side guidance or else they become corrupted and fail to keep themselve pure. In martial arts if a warrior betrays the purpose for fighting it makes him rogue and no longer serving the purpose of helping people and defending peace. Like a corrupt cop who no longer has the right to wear the badge. The moral code is what defines knight and so without approval from the light side, you lose your right to be hero now. (just like in religions the high priest needed to be clean to enter the temple where God is to commune with him) It is the moral code that distinguishes light from the dark and if you are seduced by the dark, you lose the spiritual battle and become an agent of the dark. (which symbolises the sinful side of man) Knights would not be virtuous heroes if they did what they want rather than what the light side of the force wants. There is a spiritual connection between the light side and the knights who must do the will of the force. (which is the god of star wars basically - light are good guys and the dark are the bad guys. When light overcomes dark is the balance. Many fans falsely believe light and dark in equal amounts means the force is balanced. (they got the idea from the Yin and Yang symbol) No dark is evil, light is good and good overcoming evil means peace in the galaxy thus balance and people living in harmony together. Like when nature is going according to its order rather than being perverted and used and weaponised to control people. Waterfalls are peaceful because nature created them. But what if you used the nature to make terrible weapons like took wood and stones to make clubs to kill people? That's imbalance since you took nature and perverted it to your selfish will to control and enslave people with it ie the dark side bringing imbalance and disharmony. )

"So be it.....Jedi." The delivery, especially from Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor, makes the whole dialogue between himself, Vader and Luke one of the greatest things I've ever witnessed. I just absolutely LOVE everything in the Star Wars films to lead up to these final moments with the ultimate power in the galaxy finally meeting his match, in a father's love for his son being the ultimate victor........
@GothRailfan Жыл бұрын
If Star Wars was a tragedy in the Ancient Greek style of Athenian tragedy, there wouldn't have been a redemption arc for Vader. But that's not to say that Luke and Anakin wouldn't have that father-son attachment. The love and attachment between father and son is all over in Greek literature. Palpatine would've killed Luke, and then probably Vader afterwards, or have Luke kill Vader, and/or all three of them would die.

I especially like how after he reveal himself in episode III, he just go all out with his mimic and crazy attitude; he's been suppressing that side of himself for a long time, so of course he will go to extreme extends when he comes out. "Everything that has transpired has done so according to my design." That right there is my favorite line from Palpatine. It just goes to cement the fact that he is the ultimate evil in the Star Wars universe. He literally made sure that everything that happened in the Empire was under his control. He's not scared of defeat by the Rebels simply because he *knows* that there's no way short of a miracle that they can win. Had it not been for outside help (in the form of teddy bears, but still...), there's no way the Rebels could have prevailed. The Emperor was simply too powerful.

***** Were it not for outside help, the Rebels would have lost. The only reason they found the shield generator for the Death Star was because the Emperor basically told them where it was. Palpatine was overconfident. He seemed to know how to create his empire, but not keep it. The He supposedly was using a battle meditation that was making the imperial fleet win against the Rebels. After his death it assured the rebel's victory. Palpy also didn't oddly forsee Vader's care for his own son, thus he got thrown into a pit
@HistoricFinance7 жыл бұрын
Emperor Palpatine is such a well-acted and written, compelling character. When I was younger, that scene beginning around 7:00 minutes into this video used to scare me. Palpatine is creepy to begin with, but something about seeing a dark robed, disfigured shadowy figure that is the most powerful man in the universe walking slowly towards Luke (and me, the viewer, from a nearly first-person perspective), while mockingly intimidating the hero, was a very frightful experience the first time. The various laughs he does are also great. I still regard the Emperor as one of the very top characters in the series, perhaps ranked above Darth Vader in intimidating and interesting qualities, or perhaps above all others. I even completed the main quest in Skyrim as Palpatine, in a strange scenario in which he found himself within another world, all for the taking.
