When i was a teenager, my family and i vacationed to St. John and made so many memories that i cherish to this day. The place was like paradise. I long to go back, but it's very expensive. The white sand and clear blue warm water, Snorkeling in trunk and cinnamon bay, friendly locals, and the nightlife and drinks in the procelain parrot and monkey mugs, and dancing the night away. Breathtaking sunsets! The place was paradise back in early 2000s.

No, only near the bays is safe to fly. Most of the island is a national park. However, they don't really care if you film there. Granted, we were there right when they announced the new policy for filming in national parks, but all the Rangers we asked and emailed didn't seem to care.

Awesome video! I’m planning to visit in the coming weeks to st Thomas and plan a day to St. John’s. Is it recommended to rent a jeep while driving in the island or would I be fine with a FWD like a RAV4? I read st Thomas is pretty okay with the roads, but St. John has a lot of steep roads. I plan to stop by the places you showed in the video. Btw amazing videos! It’s helping me plan my up coming trip for my gf bday 😁
@TheDetourDuo Жыл бұрын
Thanks. That's an awesome birthday trip! I'm sure you'll both love it. To answer your question it's going to be a bit long winded. . .From our experience it was actually harder to drive in St Thomas than St John. St Thomas had more steep elevation and a higher speed limit so it took more getting used to. (didn't help that our airbnb was on top of a mountain either) St John on the other hand is mostly a National Park so the speed limit is pretty consistently 35 or slower. You don't need a jeep but definitely need to rent a vehicle that can handle that elevation. Plenty of cars there weren't 4WD, but you have more peace of mind with 4WD. All the roads are well paved though. Also: be sure to check with your rental company on whether or not you can take their vehicle to the other islands. We had an amazing rental service called "Dexters" they were great about us taking the jeep back and forth and were even completely understand when a kid hit our jeep while it was parked. For sure recommend them, but just do your research with rental companies. We heard horrible stories about some getting really nasty for people taking cars to the other islands or taking the tops off the jeeps
@bryanquin7972 Жыл бұрын
@@TheDetourDuo I appreciate the long winded response! That is what I was reading regarding the car rental situation and going to St. John’s. Don’t get me started on the terrible 1-star reviews left on the big name car rental company’s by the airport. Glad to hear from your first hand experience and I decided to pull the trigger on a Jeep rental from Dexters. The experience with them so far has been seamless and their fast responsiveness is reassuring. Looking forward to our trip and I’ll definitely be trying the pain killer! 🍹 I’ll be sure to watch your other videos as well. Thank you for your help.

I visited St. John for the first time when I was about ten years old or so. Back in the mid 70's. It was pristine, There were no crowds, we stayed at the campground and there were land crabs everywhere. The coral and fish were amazing. I know this sounds weird but I went back last year and I was let down. The coral was gone,j as you can see it is so crowded. Things change in 50 years.

Great Videos! Going to St Thomas next month and we plan to visit St John for the day. We don’t want to drive while there do we really need a car?
@TheDetourDuo Жыл бұрын
Do you plan on driving in St Thomas? Depends on what you want to fit into your vacation. You don't really need a car to visit St John for the day. The passenger ferry is cheaper and there's a few buses and taxis that go to the beaches. Keep in mind though, there aren't may means of public transport on St John so give yourself enough time to make it back, especially if you want to go to the opposite end of the island. I would aim for at least getting back before the second to last ferry. That way you don't have to worry about missing it and spending the night on the island, and you don't have to worry about it being completely full with stragglers.

We are spending 8 days in the usvi... and I can't figure out how much cash we should be bringing? Are there a lot of atms or should we bring it with us?
@TheDetourDuo Жыл бұрын
Depends on where you're staying and how you plan to get around. We really didn't need cash other than at local restaurants but there are ATMs in the heavy traffic areas. In St John I only remember seeing them in Cruz Bay. You'll definitely want cash there. In St Thomas, I feel like we only ever had about 100 or so on us then found an ATM pretty easily when we exhausted that amount. Plus you don't want to be carrying around loads of cash. Sorry, don't know how helpful my rant was 😅

I went to Rams Head sometime in early 1981 for a 6th grade class trip. I don't know if you know, but that is where the slaves that revolted on STJ threw themselves off of to die rather than be captured. There are stories about those vats in the sugar plantations and "bad" slaves being thrown into them, alive. There was a good chance in the 1700s and 1800s if you ate sugar products, you were a cannibal.
