The Best Overland Build Under 10k | Toyota Sequoia

After seeing how much money people were spending on gear to strap to the side of their cars we wanted to make a video to show you guys that you don't need a 50k Jeep Gladiator or anything super fancy to get out there and explore. We picked up our 2005 sequoia for $5500 a year ago and have spent about another 5k building it into the ultimate go-anywhere vehicle. We love to take long road trips in it and can finally camp out of our car.
So instead of spending your money on a fancy car or gear, spend it on a trip and go enjoy the outdoors.

You are exactly right about the gas mileage. 14 MPG for a 6000 lb vehicle is pretty good. Then again, if anybody is worried about gas mileage with an overland vehicle, they probably should forget about overlanding.

Over the years I've owned Toyota trucks powered by... 20R, 22RE, 3RZ, 5VZ, 1FZ, 3F, and 2UZ and oddly enough, they all got in the low to mid teens for mileage. With that knowledge in hand, my advice to anyone looking to get into a Toyota for off road is that you might as well just get one of these big bastards because going small isn't going to get you any better mileage and won't have as much room for all your graded dirt road fauxverlanding bullshit. :)

Brilliant video! I'm lucky enough to be able have 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road, with an amazing build, exclusively for overlanding and off road adventures. However, I have friends that complain they wish the could afford to get into overlanding. My husband tells them they can do it for $10k to $12k, easy, and always recommends a used Tacoma. If the person wants an SUV then he recommends a used early Lexus GX. Land Cruisers keeps higher resale, because "Land Cruiser" lol. However you can find a 2000s LX for decent prices, if you look. Well, depending on where you live, I guess.

I was lucky and found an 02 with 160k miles for $3800. It needed new shocks all the way around which is why he had it discounted. That worked perfectly for me since I was planning on a lift right away anyway!

I sold my 3rd gen for a 05 sequoia just for the space and engine... they eat closely almost the same gas mileage after lifting , putting on off road tires and hauling some weight inside the car. V8 got more torque and hp..

I have a four-wheel drive 2002 Sequoia I picked up for $6,000. Unfortunately I had to replace the motor and some other maintenance so. I have not gotten my suspension yet still stock. Working on my electronic battery setup. 1200 watt inverter install. I have a 80 as amp hr. lithium titanium oxide battery. To replace my main battery. I'm putting a 100 amp hour life PO lithium battery inside.

They are from roadrunner fiberglass. Originally made for the tundras but bolt on to the sequoias as well!

It is a modified coastal off-road bumper. We modified the sides and reduced weight in some areas as well as strengthened it in other areas. We love it.

Sequoia is absolutely horrible for gas mileage. The power train is amazing but gas mileage is exactly opposite.

No hate but a LAND CRUISER is 10/10 better. I mean if you want to compare something to start off with, go compare a sequoias front suspension componeints to a LC. Theres a reason a 97 LC with 250k sells for more compared to a 05 seq with 120k. I personally own a 07 sequoia. The sequoia is a AWD (RWD biased) (A-TRAC System). The button you're talking about is the "center diff lock" and the rest are self explained 4WD.

The Landcruiser might be better but we like the fact that the sequoia can be 2wd and with a press of a button it can be 4wd. Another great aspect to the sequoia is that we can fit a queen size mattress in the back and sleep in it during winter trips.

For sheer space and interior sleeping the Sequoia beats the LC 10 out of 10 times. I can take my Sequoia on pretty much any CO trail I want to. (Note: I do NOT want to take it on Holy Cross or BBP so...... )

Its a good video just a few misleading things. My sequoia gets 14mpg fully loaded with my overland gear, not sure if that helps with any insight.

Yea we agree the gas mileage is not good! Was trying to be sarcastic and optimistic since we had even worse gas mileage with our Discovery 2 in the past.
