Hospitals are my go to. As a solo female traveler safety is always on my mind and hospitals are very safe! I have also been trying out nice hotel chains with big parking lots and nice apartment building or condo complexes. I roll in late and go to their overflow parking. Haven't had a problem yet! Great conversation and thanks for the tips.

Small auto repair shops & used car dealerships are priceless! They typically close early and often open up relatively late or are closed entirely on the weekends, especially Sundays! PLUS no one EVER pays attention to random vehicles being parked overnight because any old cars and trucks parked in their lots will change on a daily basis. EVERY small town has at least one!

I did van life 3-4 months at a time for about 10 years in my white Ford E-250 "work van". I was able to blend in well in city neighborhoods because I looked like an average contractor or delivery van: i had a vent hood and a small ham radio antenna on the roof. My main adventure was Natl Forest and BLM land where you can camp at random spots for I think 16 days at a time before you have to move to a new spot, but I never stayed for more than 5 nights in a row. FREE TIP: If you take your van on forest service roads you will want to have a "magnetic sweeper" with you, which is a magnetic push broom on wheels used by roofers to pick up nails in the grass. People have bonfires and burn pallets on national forest roads and if you see evicence of a bonfire, you’ll save yourself multiple flat tires (and being stranded way out there) by "sweeping" the road / pulloff area before you drive over dozens of nails. I never once used an app to scout camping spots, instead I would look at topographic maps, forest road maps, etc or ask locals at the diners, bars, or other small businesses in town. I always had a handgun and a rifle on my trips, no matter what states I was in (looking at you, Cali!). I agree about being discreet in neighborhoods and not "setting up camp", that's idiotic. In over 10 years, hundreds and hundreds of nights in all 48 states and 5 provinces of Canada (no I didn't bring firearms into Canada) I've never been hassled by the cops or locals. But I was sleeping in a Walmart parking lot in Albuquerque once when there was a shootout! God bless y'all and stay safe out there! These trips were some of the best times of my life.

I used to do this, before it was a thing. Fifty years ago, I camperized a van and lived in it, although only for a few months. I would usually just park in front of an apartment building and everyone assumed I was visiting someone else in the building. That would probably not work now that van-life is so widely practised. However, van-life was not really a great long-term idea for me... I soon learned I was better off working a full-time job and buying an inexpensive apartment, to build equity. Here's a reliable tactic for finding parking in residential areas. I'll take a drive around a residential area in the daylight, looking for "for sale" signs that realtors install on the boulevard in front of their listings. Check whether lights are on anywhere, or if a vehicle is parked in the driveway. If it's in the winter, I might park briefly at the curb, while I take a few minutes to shovel snow out of the driveway (realtors bringing buyers around for a showing will appreciate this). Another way to find these places, is to drop into any local bank with an ATM foyer. Commonly, the bank will post real estate listings here, complete with street addresses and a photo, so you can tell in advance whether the parking terrain will be level when you get there.

@AdamxSoldo I never stay the same place 2 nights in a row if I can help it ..but it was probably a city that deals with travelers often .. I was in a ford ranger with a topper. Kind of stealthy .... but that was befor 2020 . Idk how things are now

@ That’s a smart strategy to avoid staying in the same place two nights in a row - it definitely helps avoid drawing attention. A Ford Ranger with a topper sounds like a pretty stealthy setup! A lot has changed since 2020, though, with more places cracking down on overnight parking. Hopefully, there are still some good low-key spots for travelers like us.

@@MonicaHernandez-yn8ct Some Planet Fitness locations are still open 24 hours, though this can vary, especially during holidays or for specific locations. It’s always best to check with your local gym for their hours!

Plus, a lot of the patrons who arrive at the 24 hour gym or big box store at 2am for a workout or shopping arrive with their bass pounding, and they sit in the car for an eternity before turning it off and going in. Then, when they get back in their car an hour and a half later, the bass starts again. PF is not my choice... ever! Hospitals and medical facilities are choice overnight spots. Just park on the street in any neighborhood if you have totally blacked out window coverings. Banks are another spot most people overlook. 24-hour boat ramps are nice naturey spots to wake up in.

@ You nailed it about the gym parking lots! The bass-pounding cars can be so frustrating. Love your suggestions, especially the idea of boat ramps for a peaceful wake-up!

Thanks for the feedback on the volume! I’ll make sure to look into that for future videos - your input helps me improve. Let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to see adjusted! I was experimenting with some cool shots by the river but it was a little louder than I expected.

How about strip malls?
@AdamxSoldo
@AdamxSoldo Ай бұрын
Good point! Strip malls can be great for overnight parking, especially if they’re quiet and don’t have ‘no parking’ signs. I remember there were a bunch of these in Las Vegas that seemed pretty safe, would have slept there if it wasn’t 100°F at night

Parking in rural neighborhoods is NOT a good idea! We REALY do NOT like strangers in Vans or other vehicles in our spaces, we tend to defend our neighborhoods, don't do it.

Thank you for sharing your perspective! I understand that parking in rural neighborhoods can feel invasive to some residents, and I always recommend being mindful and respectful of local communities. This video focuses on safe, legal, and considerate options for overnight parking.

Nonsense. Overnight parking is being banned at commercial establishments all across the country. Even truck stops are cracking down on anyone not driving a tractor/trailer. Been doing this for years and have seen things change drastically. Street parking is an option in some communities but don't be surprised if you get the knock from police. "Suspicious vehicle". Complete nonsense but people can't seem to mind their own business.

@@jeffnorbert1871 Thanks for sharing your perspective! It’s true that overnight parking rules have been tightening up in many areas and the changes can definitely be frustrating. Street parking does seem to work in some communities, but you’re right - it’s always a gamble depending on the local laws and how residents or law enforcement view it. It’s unfortunate that so many places are becoming less welcoming to travelers, especially as van life and road trips grow in popularity. Staying respectful of the spaces we use and trying to build understanding with local communities could help but it’s a tough balance for sure.

I live in the forest in Santa Cruz mountains. When we first bought this place, the road was a little bit better couple of times we woke up and there was a car backing up out of our driveway. We have 3 acres so I didn’t care. It was just interesting.

It doesn’t matter where you live or how you live. You just need a place to lay your head. Go to the bathroom take a shower couple suitcases of clothes and place to cooking. Make sure you’re safe. I live next-door to a career criminal. At least when you’re in your van, you can drive away.
