Terrific! I thought the VR gossamer wood shavings was funny until I saw the treadle lathe. Credit to the "straight man" for not cracking up.

You just perfectly described crafting a house in Skyrim! Also reminds me of using a CNC and then saying you carved something.

Hard times create hard men. Hard men create good times. Good times create weak men. Weak men create hard times....and/or IKEA. Appreciate your guy's dedication to the trade. I have learned much about hand tools and craftsmenship from your channel.

When I see things that were obviously made with a CNC, 3D printer or other robotool. I can appreciate the creativity of the design, but I don’t value it as much as I would if it was made with at least some manual craftsmanship. I want to make things with my own hands as much as possible. I work at a computer all day. So I don’t want to spend even more time sitting there programming a CNC only to do the assembly and finishing myself. I might as well just buy it from IKEA at that point. Is the next step in woodworking just designing the piece and uploading it to a website that then gets it built in a factory in China and delivered to my door in a few weeks? “Hey Honey, the wine cabinet I built for you arrived today!” I’m not saying that technology doesn’t have a place in professional woodworking. In fact, it’s probably necessary to make any money at it. But as a hobbyist, I’m drawn to exploring what I can make with my own hands as much as possible. Although I have to admit I didn’t start out that way. When I decided I wanted to start woodworking, my focus was on what machines I needed to buy. I bought a track saw and a router pretty quickly. Next on my listed was a planer. But then I realized that dust collection was going to be a problem. And I began to worry about how annoying the noise of the machines would be to my family and neighbors. So then I would need to do something to reduce the sound escaping from my garage. Then my daughter got engaged and I realized that I can’t afford all that. (I really couldn’t before then, but I had the fever for the dream.) Then I found the M&T podcast and listening to their mellow music and voices talk about hand tool woodworking was peaceful and relaxing. So I decided to attempt to restore some rusty old bench planes my Stepfather gave me. The jack plane is still not good. I had some success with the Stanley Bailey #6 though. It was fun to slice off nice wispy shavings without annoying noise. I didn’t get saw dust in my eyes and I was surprised how smooth the surface of the wood was. I think it will be more fun, less stressful and cheaper. It might take longer to finish each project, but I’m not trying to sell anything so it doesn’t matter.
