Two things. 1. I forgot to mention the accuracy. It's gaining just under 5 sec a day, so overall pretty good. 2. This really needs a good nickname. So please if you have something please suggest it. The only names I was coming up with was; The Posidean The North Star The Stick The Narwhal (Min hand kind of looks like a horn)

You are certainly one of the best reviewers on KZbin. this video is once again, very balanced, fair minded, observant and extremely calm/mellow. I bet as a friend you make a perfect good scotch and interesting conversation friend. The type you can confide anything to. If you are ever in Australia, let me know. (do you drink Scotch?) Cheers and thanks for another great watch review. From a subjective point of view I like the hands on this one...modern, and simple, whereas the Triton has hands which seem inelegant and overly aggressive. Having minute markings the whole way around makes it useful for the dozens of non-diving related uses of a bezel. In terms of value, the current prices of Glycine subs, which are half a cm thinner, would make this a choice based on its aesthetics being a strong motivator. The dial is beautiful as is the finishing as you noted.

As an Orient fan, the initial price put me off, they were generally going for around $750+ when they were first released. My biggest gripe was $750+ ... and a pressed clasp!!. I might just have another think about them, now that the price seems to be coming down a little. It's a handsome watch, and I 've been wanting a larger diver, as the small number I currently have are all around the 40mm mark. Thanks for the tip re the TUS site, I'd never heard of them!.😃

@Relative Time I've been anxiously awaiting this review since you posted your pics some time back... I've not been able to forget this model. I have a "grail" watch I need to save money for, and this one comes right next to it. I'm honestly kind of speechless; you've already mentionned everything about it. I think what stands out most to me, is the same as you: the hands and indices. The shape and finish. What I particularily appreciate about the dial is the fact they left out an inner beveled chapter ring. Instead, they focused on a certain "simplicity" to the layout. This is a model I get a feeling had so much work in the design department to get just right... from the placement of the cutouts on the hands to the pill shape and finish on markers and hands. They've managed to keep a very "Orient"-like look, but to bring it to a way sportier level, while maintaining the classy touch Orient divers have. Everything is for you to focus on the dial, and nothing else. The case is perfectly trimmed down and shapped in such a way that lugs are almost an afterthought. And the edge of that bezel... ohh man... Anyways, I could go on, because I fell in love with this one. In my eyes, Orient really hit the mark on this one. To me, it's their nicest watch. Thank you for the review and awesome close-ups!

You asked about the movement… I believe this is the undecorated version of the same movement that’s in the Orient star outdoor. That would make sense I suppose because it has the same power reserve indicator, has a close case back so no need for a decoration, and is in the ‘Starr’ line. Thanks for the great review!

Hi Shane, i have the green one and You´re right with bezel play. It's too light and should be more precise. But the watch is perfectly legible, and the lumens are also very powerful. Despite the size, it is wonderful to wear. I also think the "pressed" clasp is very well made, it is above all comfortable, cleanly made and has no sharp edges. It's the first watch i have with a power reserve display and i have to say: you quickly get used to it and don't want to be without it anymore. The clock rates are also top.

I just bought one at about $530 including shipping (Jomas). Alas, it wasn't available on the Orient web site or any other non-gray-market site. I messed around with the bracelet, but I utterly failed to fit it to my wrist. There is a quirky pin and collar system that is totally different from the usual Orient bracelets that I can adjust in a coma. A jeweler did it for about $20. It is obviously a heavy watch, but I find it extremely well balanced and comfortable on my 7-inch wrist. It is extremely easy to read. The dial is very different from any other. There is no homage to Seiko or Rolex here. I like the open, wide face. So, a great purchase. And yes, I WILL be taking it diving.

@@RelativeTime Travel is such a bother, nowadays. I have forgotten whether you are an American. If so, I'd suggest Cozumel. I have dived there many times, and it's also cheap. (II like to have save money if I don't have too sacrifice much.)

@@RelativeTime I have now taken it diving. It's extremely functional: easy to set the bezel and easy to read at any depth. It's obviously over-engineered. While it has no crown guard, I expect it just doesn't need one. Also, the blue dial pops under brightly lit underwater conditions. This is a "diver's 200m," and, in every way, it feels like one. While Orient told me not to take my Kamasu diving (and so I haven't), I've used it in water, and it's just not as functional, no matter how pretty its red dial is.

As usual a great experience of a review from you. I love your shots in various elements and different straps. I've mentioned your narrative some times here, so not again lol. I'm usually not a pepsi guy, I mostly prefer black bezel inserts. But here it actually looked really good. That said, I'm usually not a blue dial guy either (usually to bright blue for my taste), but this was a really beautiful dial with that dark sunburst blue yet still vibrant. Orient Star always seems like premium quality for money even though this is a little steep for me personally, and also a little too big in size for me. A beautiful diver never the less. Keep up the good work.

I plan on keeping them all, plus my green Bulova Oceanographer (Devil Diver), Citizen BN0191-55L and Glycine Combat Sub Ambush. @@valentind134 Probably my black Triton/Neptune. Unfortunately, it has been discontinued. I did also buy its replacement, the RA-AC0K01B10B (sometimes called the Triton Lite). It does not have the power reserve meter, the DIVER’S 200m rating or the diver extension on the bracelet. If those are not important, I would recommend it. I do prefer its longer minute hand, thinner case and its lighter weight. If a person has a smaller wrist, I recommend the Kamasu or the new RA-AA0810N19B (an update to the Ray II).

Just subscribed and thank you for a great review. I am a orient star single brand collector and caught both of your reviews. What got me into the brand is the power reserve and dial designs esp their older models ... Initially, I thought this was too simple of a design unlike their earlier 200m diver - air revolver but still purchased their limited edition (blue dial with black bezel) and the longer i wear it i fell in love with it. Now have the green and black and yellow edition as well. I realised with orient star is that there are many who never owned one but never met one with just one orient star watch...hahaha

The orient diver is a very high end , well put together watch. Change the bracelet thats all. None of those other watches come close to this orient star. An this orient star will be highly collectible in the coming years.

Absolutely fantastic review video. I think the watch has too many negatives for the price though. What I noticed first is that the bezel appears to be clearly misaligned. And I'm not crazy about seeing a single-link "pseudo-oyster" bracelet on such an expensive watch. But it's good to know that is has the best pressed clasp 😉 And although I do like a touch of colour on dials and hands of a watch I think the yellow "Diver's 200m" writing looks a little bit out of place here. Finally the new Orient dive watches shown at the end of the video look pretty much like Orient want to offer something to the numerous SKX fans, hopefully with sapphire! 🖖

There is an Open Heart Orient Star Diver. It's a similar size, but way different case and supposedly a better bracelet. I might look at one in the future, but unfortunately they went the 21mm lug route there. The new ones say they are sapphire, which is one of the reasons I was thinking it's a Triton replacement. Although unfortunately it looks like took out the Diver's 200m along with the power reserve. Serious Watches already has them up for sale for 299 euros (~$350). So a little high, but not too bad.

Your reviews are so good...different than any other in terms of delivery, but you provide all the info required for a watch review. The way you discuss the look and feel of the various aspects (dial, bezel, finish) are what sets you apart, and I totally agree with you on this watch, I was thinking a lot of the things and then you were saying them in the review. Kinda cool. It is a looker for sure, love that dial, hands and the bezel (which surprised me, but I still think it looks great on that watch) but it does indeed have some serious competition given its price, you threw up some killer ones in your review. My only complaint is the strap show for this one, it was weak by your standards.... 😂 and it was the first time I didn’t like the look of a strap that you added on (not the rubber or braclet). But you are the king of straps, so it must be me...😉 I think this one could be a strap monster with that dial and bezel combo.

The Neptune is more of a pure tool watch with its matte dial, where this is a tad more elegant with a bit more flash. Although some of the Orient Star colorways will be more toned down than this. I think TUS watches mentioned that the sunburst effect isn't as dramatic on the standard blue and black.

Not that it matters in the States, the watch received Japan’s Good Design Award in 2019 that awards designs that are beautiful, functional, and have improved/innovated human lives A great watch from Orient!

Great review, Shane. I find myself looking to brands other than Seiko, these days; for best value set for your dollar. I am more than just a little off put by the price gouging for an SKX series. In excess of $325 for a watch with a 7S26? This watch is probably where Orient wants you to go after the Kamasu. Sadly, I have also heard the rumors about the Triton. I had taken that with a grain of salt until you said it. Now, it appears; to be somewhat more than just a rumor. Nevertheless, it was a good heads up for your viewers. Good job!

The date placement is unfortunate as it highlights the diminutive size of the movement. This watch suffers from 'big watch/tiny movement' syndrome. The clasp is 100% seiko. Looks to be an exact 1:1 copy of the clasp on my seiko prospex samurai.

Orient are great, no doubt about it, but sometimes I really wonder how they manage to put milled clasp on $140 watches and pressed one on $700+ ones.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 4 жыл бұрын
I'm still guessing that they went this route because they wanted that diver's extension. So they probably used the design or stock clasp for a turtle. Supposedly the other open heart Orient Star Diver has a milled one, but haven't seen it for myself.

Pricey Keeper.....Orient Star Preeker 👍.....yes I don't work in marketing as you can tell! Lovely watch, even with the slight disappointments. Love Orient Star. Orient is a great brand but the star line is definitely a step above. You should have kept your Retrograde mate! Great thorough review

@@RelativeTime I still have my Retrograde. I did also have an Orient Star classic white dial with blue hands. I loved it, but ended up selling as I don't tend to wear a dress watch, and have a vintage Ricoh 70s automatic that I tend to wear when needed. I do kind of regret selling. But as said love Orient Star look forward to hearing about your new purchase mate if and when it happens 👍

I briefly show and talk about the diver extension about 13:45. It's very similar to what Seiko uses. Only desk diving with this one so far. Most of the pools around here are closed, and at least 6-7 hour drive to the beach. So probably won't for a while.

I’m a huge Seiko fan I have an entire box dedicated from low end prospex to grand seiko SBGA diver so naturally I’m drawn to orient I love all the details but to put a cheap stamped claps on an orient star is kind of disappointing I think the open heart diver is more dynamic and refined for a negligible amount of money more. You can’t go wrong with an orient star though

Curious. Why do you think Seiko should take note of the watch’s signed crown? I think for the most part Seikos come with signed crowns at this price point, no? Perhaps on a reissiue you wouldn’t get a signed crown. My Sumo certainly had one and it was similarly priced.

From my own experiences, I can't really say when Seiko includes one and when they don't. On my Turtle (~$350-$400), and the sport watches below that I don't think I've seen one. As well as my new 2020 Alpinist (~$650) it didn't. Although strangely I remember seeing it on a Cocktail Time (~$350). So far I haven't quite figured out when they do or when they don't.

as an owner of the ray 2 and triton, i've wondered about this one. my only problem is how similar in size and weight it is to the triton. i like my triton for it's "tooliness" look and my ray for it's more classic look. my question to you is, where does this one stand?

Somewhere in between, but more towards the ray 2 as it's less "tool"

Clearly a lot more design effort was made on the OS than the Mako, Ray, Kamasu, Neptune, or Triton. That combination of Pepsi and Bond NATO is a look only a mother could love. Nickname: Orient Star Submarine. According to Gnomon Watches on the F6N47: "The 22 Jewels, 50-hour power reserve F6N47 Automatic runs at a daily tolerance of +25 to -15 seconds per day, beating at 21,600bph with a power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock (somewhat iconic across the whole Orient Star flagship line), a date display at 3 o’clock." I have no idea where they got this information except from Orient itself.
