I still use the rotating DVD shelves, because they’re cheaper and easier to move around in my house, and I can organize hundreds of movies, since my bookshelf is now used for analog media like books, vinyl, cassette tapes. Also I use the rotating shelf for physical video games.

Bookmarking these for later. Currently I'm someone who is 25 years old and because of my work I constantly move all the time every 6 months or so and only have storage space for whatever I own to fit in a honda civic. Because of this my about 450 discs worth of my physical media collection are mainly all stored in binders and the empty cases are in storage bins in my parents attic across the country. Once I am able to find a stable job and living situations, I will definitely consider buying one of these shelving units if they are still being sold in like 3-4 years from now. I just want to be able to proudly display all my physical media by then, but for now I am stuck with binders unfortunately.

@weldonyoung1013
@weldonyoung1013 6 ай бұрын
Hello @ebinrock , I decided to come back to this comment and replace it. I have use a Prepac shelf - the Slim Barrister Tower, a single width. As far as particale board style shelves go they are very good. No voids or delamination. After I got one I started looking for more. In my area they are not possible to get. If you get the Barrister style be aware the last disc case on each end of a shelf can only be removed if another is taken out of a full row. Also, with wider shelfing in the Barrister type there is a strip that is wider at each division that can hide some titles. And if you want to improve you shelving from any manufacturer, replace the tack type nails holding on the back with #4 screws 1/2 to 3/4 inch long (do drill 1/16" pilot hole for those). Secondly, get some plastic (push-in or screw-in type) feet to slide the shelf around on (will protect from clean water too, preventing the corners from deteriorating).

Finding a good way to store my precious discs isn‘t easy. I like how well done and stable these shelves look, but I‘d never use something open, since you have to clean them regularly so they don‘t collect dust. Also, which maybe isn‘t a problem in your room, since it doesn‘t seem to have windows, I don‘t think that permanent sun exposure is good for longevity of the discs.

Those were perfect as you could get them as your collection grew and they were around 40 bucks, but, alas, they discontinued them. I gave all mine away after an eviction a few years back ( I kept the movies, priorities and all 😎) but they’re a simple build. I think later I’ll make my own with some quality hardwood. Nail gun 1x2 to the wall for the height you need. nail gun the plywood to the 1x2. then the 1x3 are the supports on the sides. I am not crazy handy and they are still easy as hell. Then I painted them and added led ribbon lighting to the edges.

The shelving looks pretty good, but I'm concerned that the metal brackets will likely scratch the boxes of the movies that are at either end of each shelf. There needs to be a solid panel at each end of the shelves, that covers the brackets for the full height of each shelf. Aesthetically, I think the brackets would look better if they were slightly shorter, in line with the length of the shelves and finished off with some sort of covering at the front of the bare metal.

All considered your shelves look great but I don't think it's worth the upgrade and maybe a little overkill
@distantearth
@distantearth 9 ай бұрын
Seems sturdy but I don’t really like the design with the shelf supports a different colour and sticking out 🫤 I own 4 particle board based media shelves by a brand called Artiss. They have adjustable shelves. Mine came laminated with chestnut brown laminate. And each unit is about 1 metre wide and 2 metres tall. Resulting in about 9 shelves per unit which you can adjust to suit Blu-rays, DVDs or CDs. Once setup and against the wall, they are sturdy and safe, and in the exact same condition as when I bought them (5yrs ago) - no breakage. If you look after them they last forever. I did not need to screw anything to the walls for them as each one has a wide base ensuring it can never tip or anything. So I put soft felt pads on the top of the back of each unit to ensure there is no minor wall rub over the years. Each unit costs about AU$150 on eBay. And the end result looks expensive, and all dark brown. But I believe they come in a variety of shades.

@@moviemaster00000it was a definitely a low IQ idea to take your advice, I will admit that. Thanks for ruining my Blu-Ray collection with your advice on cheap shelves.

I don't like the looks of the brackets...looks 'unfinished' Perhaps an end cap or just not having them protrude so far out from the vertical rail. Otherwise, looks like solid, long-term product.

Appealing shelves/storage can make or break a collection, so I am happy you found some you are satisfied with!

Moved into an apartment earlier this year, and haven't bought (or watched) DVDs or Blu-rays since-in part because I don't have shelves for them anymore. I had built myself a cheap media shelf when I still lived with my parents, but it had less chance of surviving the move than my Walmart prepack shelves, haha. Recently I decided I really need to unpack and display all my movies again. This aluminum shelf would be tempting even on my tight budget, but as a renter, I can't drill into my walls. Your video did remind me of those rotating shelves you were using, though, so I think I'll use those, at least until I can move into a more permanent space.

Hmm…I bet it would be easy, and significantly cheaper, to use aluminum T slot extrusion to do the exact same thing! Maybe three hundred bucks.

Custom bookcase works really well. Lot less expensive you can build it better than you can buy it. Yeah I'll never buy anything made of particular board. A lot of furniture is made of that and you still have to put it together. Might as well build it like you want with better material. If you are handy with woodworking.

I built my own shelves so they'd fit the walls exactly. It's of course crooked in a few places. I'm not a good cabinet maker so I'm not surprised. I can't decide if I try again or just buy some shelves. I do like that the shelves I can make fit exactly rather than a store bought pre-set dimension. Aluminum sounds like a cool idea.

Ugh your speaker placement. I would buy some speaker stands and put them height wise to the middle of the tv. And your tv is to high for my taste.

These are not bad at all. But shelving with vertical beams supports are also available at Lowes and Home Depot. I built a couple myself throughout the years for media and books and they're pretty sturdy

How about this idea… the wider shelf set with the top half as a SteelBook display (flat sheet of metal with a pre positioned magnets and a material cover) and then the normal shelf storage on the bottom? Even better an included top shelf with a lighting system to light up the display????
