Man I gotta play through G2 again this year, I got it out of a bargain bin on PS2 as a teenager and it was my first real church-defying/godslaying RPG (even though I'd already beaten FFX it just didn't sink in because of the many wrinkles on top). As far as I remember the pope wasn't possessed by Valmar he was just straight up crazy because he knew (to avoid spoilers) what the result of the old holy war was.

True I may have misspoke, I do believe he is possessed at some point because we fight him but that may have come right at the end. I'm an old man who forgets things easily.
