People are missing the point. The condition for when this works is when money is not the problem. The question puts a person back in the space of thinking about if they want it (and not about if it is practical), which is the root of most sales.

@@lilitsogomonyan3860Well...........ya because it was something you didn't like/want/need... The point here yet again is if it were the opposite... It didn't work for you because you didn't fit into the customer criteria this is referring to. Hence the question. If your answer was "NO" you wouldn't take it for free.... Then it's NOT about the money...... It's about the fact that you're clearly not interested..

As much as this is true for the most part of sales conversations, it also has to be aknowledged that sometimes people will just take something for free BECAUSE it is free, not necessarily because they have a use for it.

Glad someone said! Most people would take anything expensive for free!
@Jaydddeanda10 күн бұрын
I hear you, but guess what? The true value is realized when you use it or give it away
@lisakim272710 күн бұрын
@@willmartin4430but that's because of the perceived value. You just said it in your statement, that people would take something expensive for free. What if someone offered you a free used dirty toaster? What if it was a dirty old couch? Would you take one of those? Almost certainly not. It's perceived value is typically as trash. Maybe cleaned up, so refurbished, you might consider it however. Even if you already had a toaster, you might take another toaster in mint condition because either it could be a replacement in the event your current toaster breaks or you could either regift it to someone else that you know who could use it or sell it. There's value to be found in almost anything. Even in a dirt filled bag.
@jared042910 күн бұрын
Except people with money. If the cost doesn't matter to them in the first place, they're not going to get excited about something free. I'm assuming this was a high-end shop they were in based on who they are. So the salesman had probably use this tactic before

I believe the question was not redirecting back into the sale but an ego poke. It's an ego poke to the buyer who said money is not an issue, which is him being prideful, but when you are forced to acknowledge that you'll take it if it's free, then you are being "humbled". And to prove you're not a cheapskate, you'll buy it just to back your original statement and keep your pride. Not taking away anything from the statement, but I believe the intention is very different from what you construed it. It can very well backfire because the person you used on might feel insulted.

guys don't miss the point of it. it's a question to potentially save a lost sale. guy tells you I don't need it, you ask if it were free would you take it, if yes then it's a value question. no doubt selling winter jackets in texas is a questionable business but the prospect might have a black swan like a home in alaska, or travels a lot, or plans to go skiing in Switzerland or needs a Christmas gift for dad. if the jacket gonna last him a lifetime and is nice looking it becomes an attractive purchase.
