Thank you for coming out and letting me be a part of this educational video. I learned a ton of stuff about the different kinds of emergency beacons and the one that is right for me. With your help I now know the one I need and I plan to upgrade soon. Thanks again.

Hey Jerry. I enjoyed hanging out with you and going through all of these satellite communicators. We put a lot of information out there for people to consider. It's always good to educate ourselves and maybe help other people along also. Rick

I’m super excited to watch this video for the last 10 years. I’ve been using a personal locator beacon. In the truth into the word. It’s not a satellite communicator and the peace of mind it has provided me is been immense. It’s got the built-in five-year battery it’s got the three different satellite, constellations part of a world wide search and rescue effort that specifically designed for church and rescue most of the world government subscribe to it, anyway just recently I’ve been interested in getting or I should say adding a satellite communicator because there are two very different products. I always want to keep my personal locator beacon with me because it’s got a lot more power and then also back up if one of them fails, I’ve got the other one as a back up. So this is gonna be a really interesting video. I also find it very interesting to listen to the different personality types. Even as a young guy I never thought I was invincible. All you have to do is look around there’s young people to get killed all the time we know statistically a younger person is more likely to get killed doing an activity, then dying from the medical issue. But I don’t care how young you are you can get lost. I don’t care how young you are you can fall down and break your leg and not be able to move 10 feet one of the thing I would suggest with any of these devices, whether it be a satellite communicator or a personal locator beacon is keep them on your purse and do not throw them in a backpack think about this you slip and fall in your backpack goes over a cliff now what are you gonna do? You can’t crawl down the cliff to get your backpack so your beacon does no good. Or maybe you set your beacon down and you go for a walk that’s 50 feet away that you fall and break your leg and you literally can’t move 5 feet. Or you break your back again the beacon does no good. What I do with mine as I loop the lanyard through my belt loop and then it is on my person at all times. Thank you guys so much for doing this video I can’t wait to finish it.

Thanks for the great comparison. I have both the Spot Gen 4 and the Zoleo. The Zoleo is much simpler and user-friendly for a new user than the Spot. The Spot interface is clunky. The multiple buttons on the Spot and lack of good ACK on return make it difficult for someone to use who picks it up once a month or a few times a year. The monthly plans are within $10 of each other and the Zoleo adds the benefit of allowing text messages via satellite. I think the Spot Gen 4 has seen it's better days. Maps on a single platform are nice, but I can use my phone and phone GPS in airplane mode with a program like Gaia or Alltrails and get the same or better result as using a connected device for navigation, with the added benefit of having redundant devices. If the phone dies, I still have the Zoleo for SOS, check in's, and real-time tracking with selected contacts.

Also what I love about the Garmin Mini 2 is that it has a dive case you can buy , I take it diving w me 100ft deep, for peace of mind off shore , and all my water sports .

I used the Motorola Defy recently in the boundary waters in northern Minnesota. Works great. I found just laying it in the ground pointing straight up works better than hanging on a tree-even if pointing south. The app needs work though as my wife wasn’t getting notifications of messages so she just had to check the app periodically.

Thanks for the feedback. I was testing it a few days ago here in SW Colorado on a fishing trip. It took a little time for it to find a satellite, plus I had a similar issue when setting it up while talking to Customer Service and they told me to point it to the south. I had to go out into a large parking lot away from the buildings before I got satellite service. My experience with the Defy will be posted this week and I'm going to follow up with a more extensive field test this coming weekend. Thanks again for letting me know. Rick

I just got an inreach explorer+ for Christmas. I’m bummed because I’m thinking I should’ve asked for 67i. The explorer+ didn’t get much coverage here, but I enjoyed this video nonetheless
@outdooremergencytech
@outdooremergencytech 6 ай бұрын
The short answer is the Explore+ has been replaced by the 67i and I would recommend you return it and get the 67i in it's place. The Garmin GPSMAP 67i is now my number one satellite messenger. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick

I have a question. Lets say I start with one Garmin device like the inReach Mini2 for hiking and then later get a Montana 700 for offroading, would I need two subscriptions? One for each device? If I can share the subscription between devices would I need to select the device it's being used on or could I use them both simultaneously like if I rode the UTV to camp with the Montana and then went hiking from camp with the Mini2? Thank you for the video. I thought it was concise and offered up a lot of good info I hadn't heard in other videos.

Thank you for the great question. You could have two subscriptions, but you can switch back and forth between subscriptions as I do now. I have the Montana 750i, the Mini 2, and the 67i, in addition to many others, and in your case, you could use the 700i for navigating (which you don't need a subscription for) then you could have the subscription for the Mini 2 that you could use for SOS and 2-way messaging. You can switch up what you use and which one has the subscription as your adventure requires. I hop that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick

@@outdooremergencytech Thanks Rick. That cleared it up and what you suggest makes great sense. I couldn't find the answer at the Garmin website. Finding a lot of great helpful content on your channel. I think I've decided on a good compromise instead of the two devices mentioned is to just get the 67i.

Would you LOVE if they made the Montana a sat/phone and simplified the in app options AND made it so you could In theory, go from the store/ Amazon/ whomever and add CC And go!!! Maybe add an audio for quick tech support (top-mid tier plan) 95% simple topo/ gps map (option to upgrade) 3% EMERGENCY sos Simple stuff/ simple people Period... Thank you for your time and support

Well, you may have hit on what's coming in the near future. I doubt that the New Montana's will have all of that, but I do believe the Montana series is due for an upgrade and I'm betting that will be coming out this year. Rick

Any of the irdium based devices only need 1 satellite to send an outbound message. If your device has been on, it will send the last known gps position. Ive sent messages with mine in slot canyons. Ive also made calls with my iridium phone at the bottom of slot canyons. I was able to get out a quick phone call.
@outdooremergencytech
@outdooremergencytech 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience. I agree that you only need one satellite, but you will get better results when you can connect to multiple satellites. It's possible that if you're in a dense forest, or like you said, a canyon, that you will do well, as long as that one satellite is in the right location, but if you have multiple satellites, your chances of connecting do increase. I want to ask for one clarification though. You said you were able to get a phone call out. I'm assuming that is a typo and that you meant to say "one message," as these are messengers and phone calls cannot be made on them. Thanks for leaving the comment, Rick

@@outdooremergencytech I think you are confusing how navigation and communication satellites work. In regards to the call statement, I meant both a message and phone call. I sent a message from my inreach and made a phone call from my iridium phone. I did it simultaneously from a slot canyon in az just to see if it would work.

I appreciate the clarification. There's no confusion here, I just don't cover satellite phones but that's something I should add to what I cover on this channel. Thanks, Rick
