Elizabeth: Was it worth it? I am a very recent retiree, but I am only 50 and researching my next steps forward. I am about to submit my notary application. I view this as a no-brainer, as it is not very expensive in my state, and I believe my state is going to authorize remote notarizations in the near future. However, becoming a loan signing agent is seeming more expensive and prohibitive as I research it. Between obtaining a laser printer, sheet-fed scanner, and taking the course, I have calculated a minimum start-up cost of about $800. I can afford it, but with so many new loan signing agents entering the field, it seems to be less lucrative as time goes on. I am exploring a number of things and trying to be discerning in my considerations. I was a case manager in a court system, so this type of work is likely to be very familiar to me, but I'm trying to figure out if it is worth the effort.

Would not recommend a combo. If you have separate machines, if the scanner goes out - you still have the printer. If the printer goes out - you still have the scanner. If you are printing something you can't use the scanner and vice versa. Just get the two machines separately. It will save you $ in the long run!

I don't use my scanner to scan from my car, but you can if you buy the battery powered Epson scanner OR if you get a power inverter so that you can plug in the Brother scanner. It would be much easier to just scan the documents while sitting at the signing table.

Kendra, I'm not very tech savvy....might sound stupid but what power source do u use to scan from the table with the Brother? Do u have to plug it in? Or do u use your phone as a hotspot? Or do u use power source from the client such as a wall outlet?

what you think about photo scanner like czar or Sceyex one. they can't damage paper, they faster that other scanner (even mobile one, if you include time to make it into pdf).

Hi Kendra my all in one laser Monochrome (with a dual tray) arrived yesterday. My brother's is a MFC-L5705DW. It's connected to both my lap top and mobile Android phone. I have not stacked my dual tray yet but will today and do the necessary configuration. What im not sure of is if I need to download pdf software that way I can convert the loan docs to pdf. If I should need to do that do you have a link.? Last, I would love you to do a printer downlo video. Thank you be blessed and ridiculously ridiculously Favored!!!!

Documents will be sent to you in pdf format! And I have a video module on how to print documents in my Signing Agent Advanced Training Program! Specifically how to download documents from a signing service or title company can differ depending on how each company sends it to you, so I can't do a video on it because there are so many variables. BUT, it won't be hard and you can contact the company that sent you the docs if you have a specific question about their process! 👍🏽

I hope it does too. I spent 20 minutes phone scanning 150 pages. after I was done with loan signing. Then I couldn't send them all in 1 email cause the file exceeded 25MB! Don't want to go through that again!

Another excellent video! Since I am just getting started - still need to get trained - I am becoming ever more aware of all the equipment NSAs need to have. So far, besides, the regular notary stuff, and the things you mentioned in your "What's in My Notary Bag" video, I am now aware of a laser printer and a scanner. But have you done, or can you do, a video that outlines all the equipment that an NSA needs to be successful? I searched within your channel and could not find one. In other words, besides a laptop, scanner, and a laser printer, are there any other pieces of office equipment, portable or otherwise, that an NSA should have?

I went to use my brand new mobile portable Brother printer for my first scan back but it didn't combine the scans into one continuous scan... so i had to go old school.

Even if you have "chunks" of 20 pages you could normally still submit all of the parts to the contracting company. A FEW a picky and will only accept 1 while scan but many will take the scan backs on 4 or 5 parts - they just don't like 150 individual pages! 👍🏾

Oh thank you. I didn't know my Android phone had scanning capability, and it's better than the app I downloaded. One question please. Can the three scanners you presented detect paper sizes?

The scanners do not auto detect paper size, you have to tell it what size to scan the documents. However there is generally no problem if you scan a mixed sized package as all legal size, you don't have to scan the pages back as legal / letter. You can scan the mixed sized package back as all legal size. Do these scanners recognize letter vs legal size pages? I have an all in one printer/scanner/copier that I use when I have to do scan backs and one of the things I don't like is it can't scan mixed page sizes. For the scan to come out right I have to tell it what size is being scanned.

Hi Lalaina! No, they do not automatically detect page size but that isn't needed. If the documents you have to scan back are letter and legal sized just scan everything in as legal sized. It is generally not worth the cost to buy a very expensive scanner that can auto detect the page size.

They aren't bad, it's all about personal preference. If you get a lot of requests that require scan backs it's easier to have a mobile printer you can take with you on the road instead of having to drive back home in between appointments to scan! No I don't teach packaging. In my 13 years of being a signing agent working directly with title companies I have never had any one request that I do it or even hint that they would like me to do it. It is not a necessary skill to be a successful signing agent. Brother printers come with a scanner option. Why not get a brother printer with a scanner built-in.

Because we a mobile notaries, we meet signers at various locations that are not always close to us. Most companies want scan backs immediately after the signing. It is often more convenient to scan while you are out and about than to have to drive back to your home office in between appointments to scan. Thanks so much for making this video! I bought a Doxie Go SE last year to just have a scanner and it does NOT do a good job scanning a 100 page signing doc!! I can overlook the scanning time and manual effort because it wasn't built to scan that many pages, but the processing time is stupid long (15+ minutes) and the PDF size is ridiculous even on the lowest 300 DPI setting (50+MBs). Before we get a more appropriate designed scanner, I was curious if the Brother ASD-1700W resolved these two issues? Thanks again for all your help and wisdom!!

The Brother 1700W works great for me! I just have to scan 15 pages at a time (any more than that and the pages tend to stick together), but scanning straight to my phone whether wired or wireless over WI-FI is very fast and the PDF is ready to go in moments after the last page is scanned whether I'm scanning in B&W or Color! And then I can either email or upload the docs directly from my phone OR I can upload to Google Drive so that I can send the docs from my computer. I don't know what the dpi is set at, but the scans are clear. The scans are usually under 10mb.

@@ChildofYAH1014 If you are doing direct signings in title offices they will normally print documents for you. However if you are meeting signers in their homes or other out of office location you are responsible for printing. That's why a good laser printer is important for loan signing agents!

Where have you been all my life.....I have been a notary signing agent since 2003 in the commonwealth's of Pennsylvania and most recently Virginia. I have been using a HP Laser Jet 3055 (PCL5). I have recently moved to the state of Georgia (Atlanta Area), and am looking to continue my business here. What type of scanner/printer do you suggest??

Hi when you scan legal and letter mixed is the resulting pdf mixed size only? I have a workforce epson and the pdf is letter size only. im trying to figure out if this is going to be an issue for scanbacks or is this what they all do. thanks for any info.

It depends on your scanner and how you have the settings set on your scanner. Most scanners can scan both letter and legal, you need to look up how to adjust the settings on your scanner. The question is for florida signings are there specific loan packages that will have documents requiring 2 witnesses and if so will the title/closing company specify for each signing what they require for witnesses? Also if they allow me to act as one of the witnesses can i be one and sign even if notarial language is on the bottom of the document. thanks

Question: Is it necessary to have a mobile scanner with you so that you can scan a document right there at the signing? Or do they actually just need it scanned back the same day? The reason I ask is that before I buy a mobile scanner, I will mention that both of my printers have excellent quality sheet-fed scanners. Can I do a signing, then return to my home office, and THEN do the scan and get it back to them?

Most companies want scan backs IMMEDIATELY after the signing. You can't just scan back when it's convenient for you. If you don't have a mobile scanner you will have to drive home to scan which means lost time (you won't be able to schedule back to back signings) and extra miles on your car driving back and forth across town to scan. Do you HAVE to have a mobile scanner? No Is it BENEFICIAL to have a mobile scanner? ABSOLUTELY! Why would you not get a printer with scanning?

Some companies want scan backs immediately. Do you want to have to drive across town back home immediately after an appointment to do scan backs because your scanner is a part of your printer? This means you will make less money because the assignment would take more time. With a mobile scanner you can scan from where ever you're at saving you time and money. How do borrowers feel about pulling out computer and scanner in their space?

I don't necessarily do it at the table with them, but I've found that if you explain to signers the need most are OK with it. And I also scan directly to my cell phone so I don't have to set up my laptop.

I can see how it would be really useful to scan a copy of their IDs if they didn't have copies made before the appointment. I've seen videos where it's suggested you can take a picture of their ID on your phone and email it, but as a borrower I would be wigged out by that. It seems more professional to say "no problem!", take out your scanner, and scan their IDs at the signing.

So, with a mobile scanner, won't it take about the same time as using a scanning app?

Not at all! With a scanning app you have to take a photo of each and every page! Most mortgage loan packages are around 150 pages! That will take a while with a scanning app! The mobile scanners I discussed are all sheet fed - you load in about 20 pages at a time and the scanner pulls them through! MUCH faster than trying to use a scanning app to take a photo of every page if you have more than a few pages to scan!

After scanning 147 pgs, I found that the file was too large to email as it is, I had to break it up in 4 parts...what is your solution to this? How do you handle scanbacks of more than 35MB? Thanks
