@@ottoforyou Oh man, it's even worse in Greece. In 2014 by a survey from the U.K. research and analysis institution Economist Intelligence Unit, we were ranked as THE WORST education system in the entirety of Europe, and for good reasons; awful school buildings with only the bare minimum facilities (only classes, bathrooms, teacher offices, and depending on the school, possibly a court for sports too), teachers who have been in the system for years to the point that some are not even interested into teaching anymore, the teacher salaries are god awful, textbooks are outdated for over a decade, and the whole system is based around remembering stuff you will forget sooner or later, tests, exams, homework, all that shit. Can we get real information sometimes? We stress alot, only reason they say we have a good system is because people treat other the same way and schools are free, no need to pay for school lunches and they get high education. If our school system is different it doesnt mean our life is full of happiness and joy. Life doesnt work that way. If someone thinks in making this up, go ahead complain but i can promise you you will meet alot of finnish people who agree with me. Because such a change is expensive and difficult to implement. Their general educational success comes from the focused, engaged environment that has become in-school norms. If you look at your school, your learning environment, how easy do you think it would be to set that standard of behaviour and learning so that it is still economical and doesn’t take an absurd amount of resources and time. Myself, from a country with a good education system and a good school, can’t fathom such a change. It’s exactly like prison systems in most Scandinavian countries. High security US prisons would never be able to or find it extremely difficult to implement such a system. The overall prison culture, whether that be inmate or administrative, is not open to much change and changes that can be made are costly and often have uninspiring, unsubstantial improvements to re-incarceration rates.

As a Finn, Finnish school system does absolutely not care about students mental health. The homework is BS bc high school students are showered with homework. Also HS students have to learn whole text books in 6 weeks. After that the examinations only test how good your reading memory is. Yes, Finland has better school system than many other countries. Most of the info in this video is not from actual student experience.

@@sta1RR Yes, a little stress is always needed. But what I meant was that video itself is not made based on student experience. Like saying that we have no test (that have a higher meaning), nor little to no homework is just purely wrong. Based on our middle school grades average we get go to high school or to vocational school. Where do we get this average? Based on every single test done in middle school. There are quite many of them from each subject. We have to study our asses off like any other student. Some students have learning problems which makes it even more difficult. The video reminds me of our elementary school which is much more child-friendly than other school system I've heard of. But after that it's a hard slap on the face of tons of homework also big exams and small tests quite frequently. Cannot forget the due projects etc. Just like any other school in the world. What is positive is long breaks (like summer break is 2.5 months), school food is free of charge, and our schools are pretty clean. But the biggest unfairness comes when you finally "graduate" from comprehensive school. High school is just an absolute prison for someone with mental health problems or learning difficulties. The amount of work made so many students drop out and the time limit for coursework being 6 weeks only. This going on and on for 3 years. Even having homework on holidays and breaks. The amount of stress you go through in those 3 years + money problems if you come from a poor family is high enough for someone to commit suicide. (Even in my HS there was a few cases). Finnish high school is just middle school all over again but the difficult level being the highest in the game. Vocational school is pretty chill. It's kinda like work like its supposed be. Depending on the field you're studying to. It workd very well and I've never really heard anyone complain about it. But not everyone can go there. They don't have education to every profession, its quite limited tbh. So anyone who wants to work in a profession that the vocational school doesn't cover have to go HS. Last year our goverment made secondary school mandatory. It has many good sides to it, everyone has chance to study in the place they want. But what about the people who don't know what they want yet? Nor don't have the ability to study through high school? They are forced to go to one of them. Either you go to vocational school and study a profession you don't want and end up not going to school while taking someone elses place on that class, someone's who would have wanted to study and learn it. Or you go to high school to burn your mental health to the ground with stress and the learning speed of a sports car. So are our school really that student friendly? While we're kids yes, but when we hit to teenage years.. oh boy.. Everything changes with a hard slap on the face from the World. Just like anyother students life. We're not special, we're not treated in a different way by schools. Look up our suicide rates lol, most of them are teens and young adults. It's not rainbows and unicorns like this video gives off.

Eh, as a Finn I'd like to point out that these type of videos often present an idealistic version of our school system. Sure it's better than US, hut it comes with it flaws. The little to no homework claim certainly was not true when I was in school (graduated upper secondary school in 2017). Also in the recent years our PISA results have been in decline.

I saw a video where Finnish high school students said it took them like 20 minutes a day max to do their homework? Is that true?
@hammasharha
@hammasharha 2 жыл бұрын
@@strawberrymilk2864 Might be the case in their specific school. The amount of homework also depends on the teacher and the courses you're taking. Science focused students tend to have a lot more homework compared to humanities. For me, well, I rarely did my homework in high school 😅

@@hammasharha oh lol, okay then😂. But if you're saying that could be true in their specific school then I guess it's pretty safe to assume than on average in Finland it's still less homework than in other countries. I'm a science focused student in Italy and barely have time to get out of my house lol. Thanks for the info tho :)

@@strawberrymilk2864 I would say yes, we probably have less homework compared to most other countries. I guess what constitutes as "little homework" is very relative and since we are used to the relatively small amount that feels like a lot more than it would feel for someone used to a lot more. I'm sad to hear you have little time for other activities, but I do wish you good luck with your studies!

As a Finn, and like many others have already pointed it out, the homework thing is not 100% accurate. Some teachers want to see the life drain from their students' eyes while others do mental CPR in the background. It's a mixed bag and depending on if you're from a city or a small town, the quality of education can also vary. I've seen quite a few, ahem, "interesting" individuals in teaching positions in my 11-12 years of attending school, so yeah.
