@@MeeshDeeReacts I'm going to say I like part one a little better. I have a long history with the book. I read it when I was in a major turning point in my life regarding religion. See I'm a non-believer now fully an atheist and I struggled with whether or not I should try to believe in God. I realized reading Dune that religion was subject to manipulation as much as any other organization that has power over people is. At that time the Catholics and the IRA were blowing people up in England and Ireland, the Israelis were taking Muslim land and the Muslims were committing terrorist acts against the Jews. And I realized religion was a political weapon. There was no need for me to feel bad about not believing in god because it was the creation of man. This wasn't the only thing that went into it but it was a significant contributing factor. I read the book in 1975 or so. Then I saw Star Wars a couple years later and saw Dune's influence on that movie. And I so wished that this book that I love so much would be made into a movie. I've been waiting almost 50 years and it finally came.

Despite the greatness of these 2 parts, I still believe the 4 part miniseries from 24 years ago developed by The SyFy Channel and Hallmark was more faithful to the book material. The one with Alec Newman as Paul Atreides. Please add it to your list as well for reaction.

One thing most people don't touch on is a statement made from the first movie when the reverend mother said "You were told to bear a daughter". What they intended was for an Atreides daughter to be mated with a Harkonnen male (Feyd) and seal the bloodlines. The problem was that Jessica truly loved Leto and knew how much he wanted a son so she turned her back on her orders. This led to Paul effectively arriving a generation before they intended and by the time they realized what was going on they had lost control of him.

Not only that.. but also that the Bene Gesserit teaching gives not only power to change poison into harmless substance (which is described in the book as mental, consciousness task of changing the molecule structure.. awesome) - but also changing the gender of the the embryo (while the Y chromozomes are provided solely by father sperm)..that's some kind of gene engineering, when probably done same way as the poison transformation...

It's not only that, She also went against her order and made Paul the Kw... the chosen one. So not only did she defy her orders and made a Son instead of a Daughter, but she pressed out the Chosen one aswell, and my memory on why is a bit foggy, but i believe she did do that simply to see if she could do it?

Interesting so vanity played a role and that has a certain ring of truth to it. Perhaps too though having now other memory and backed into the corner her and Paul were in she may be justified in thinking that only having a greater ability to navigate the future was the only way out of the mess they were in. The females couldn't see the memories of males and the Kwisatz Haderach could see both. Having a certain pride in ones children is a natural thing and seeing that Paul was performing at such a superior level, the situation they were in, it could be argued that why not arrive a generation early? However Frank Herbert never wrote in the books that humanity would've had a better future without Paul's lineage surviving, in fact without his sons choices all of humanity would've went extinct.

Well, Jessica told us in the first movie. The Bene Gesserit have been crossing bloodlines. Stands to reason there are plenty of Bene Gesserit who are unaware of their parentage (unless the Bene Gesserit want them to know). Since Jessica was either intended for Leto or that's just how it happened, you'd hardly want the let the Atreides know that she's a Harkonnen. :)
@SgtWicket
@SgtWicket 5 ай бұрын
Also it’s implied that sometimes the breeding program necessitates incest, which is easier if the participates don’t know. For example, even though Jessica was a Harkonnen, the daughter she was supposed to have was intended to marry Feyd Rautha.

So all noble women are effectively Bene Gesserit? Are the noble males just supposed to accept whoever the BG throw at them? @@ggCA07 I don't think the book says explicitly if all noble women are BG, but it makes it seem very common at least. I wrote the Dune series because I had this idea that charismatic leaders ought to come with a warning label on their forehead: "May be dangerous to your health." @@leprovokateur7745 Look up Chaos by Tom O'Neill or Through the Looking Glass by Oliver Stone. The CIA was started under Truman because after WW2 it was hard to know when one war ends and another begins. You are essentially always at war and you need a counterintelligence agency to stay ahead of the competition. Problem was is that it was allowed too much power and began to act as a government within our government. Eisenhower after him knew this and he himself said, "Beware of the Military Industrial Complex". War made USA rich and powerful, so they create problems to stay rich and powerful. Just like War is a Racket by Smedley Butler "War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes."

So there are different “chosen ones” to different groups. To the Fremen, the one is the Mahadi, a messiah who will come and free them and turn Arrakis into a paradise planet. This is largely Bene gesserit propaganda, so they can send their own people in to purposefully fulfill the prophecy and control the Fremen. To the Bene Gesserit, the one is the “kwisatz haderach”, basically a result of generations of selective breeding to create a male capable of accessing his ancestral memories in order to see the future. In a way, Paul is the chosen one in both senses, but perhaps not in the way that either group intended.

One Chosen one is fully artificial, one is just a successful product. Think of it as being an AI firm (Bene Gesserit). They kinda know what they think the final breakthrough will look like. They now create myths that are built around the abilities that their ultimate success will look like. He has prescience... so he'll have kinda semi-lived with these people BEFORE he comes there. That'll be really freaky to them, because he'll kind of instinctively know small things that nobody is taught, like how to put on shoes. Well, lets not be that specific. "He shall know your ways like one born to them"... that sounds cool and like a prophecy So for the AI company, maybe come up with "He will write the most beautiful poetry in Arabic, while doing physics in Chinese, philosophy in Greek, and Shakespeare in English". He shall sound like any one of you that he encounters after a while (duh). Now imagine if the AI is embodied in a human body somehow. This will absolutely seem like a prophecy and a chosen one. We could REALLY easily make a prophecy out of an AI with internet connection that people even in like 1980 might easily fall for, having their minds blown by the level of knowledge etc. Is the "AI" a chosen one? The AI company wanted to build it for sure, and the religious people had prophecies. But chosen one? Not really.

Paul is the archetype of a manufactured Chosen One. There is no otherworldly Gods or bestowing of power &/ prophecy that makes him unique. It is Humans playing Gods to control other humans. Fremen, being the "less educated", get religiously captured by this manufactured myth. And it isn't all wrong. It takes hold of them and catches on so strongly because the promises it makes are exactly what they themselves desire- liberation from oppression and transformation of their home into a livable paradise. And the Bene Gesserit are very aware of this, which they use to their advantage. Their plans for Arrakis with this myth-planting is more/less an afterthought; because they have done the same prophecy-myth planting on multiple worlds in order to secure safe housing for their sisters if at all they get stranded in it. But in the case of Paul on Arrakis, the Bene Gesserit don't realize how much more powerful and capable Paul becomes as the manufactured Messiah, only he himself comes to learn and use it for his own selfish/political gains. Of course, there's more to his swift change after his water-of-life drinking which will be explored more in Dune 3 when it releases.

44:52, In the books, Chani and Paul were together for over 3 years by the time this battle took place. She had his son Leto who was killed by the Sardaukar. Also Chani and Jessica were working together to help support Paul's journey to leadership of the Fremen. They were very respectful to one another. Chani truly believes Paul is the Lisan Al Gaib. So she knew Paul might have to marry someone else for political reasons. At one point Jessica re-evaluated her life choices. She realized that she and Leto robbed themselves of happiness by not marrying each other. So Jessica actually advised Paul to forget about politics and marry Chani. But don’t get it twisted despite this marriage, Paul only loves Chani. He won’t be giving the Princess Irulan the time of day. He marries her but he lives with Chani far from her. There are many scenes from the book that drive home just how much Chani loves Paul and her dedication to him. For example, Chani works hand in hand with Jessica to help support Paul's journey to leadership. Another example, is that Chani ends other Fremen who would threaten for Paul's claim to leadership. There was a scene in the book, where Paul is working on something and hears a scream from outside his tent or quarters. When he walks out he finds Chani standing there bloodied and cleaning her knife over a dead guy. When Paul would ask what's up Chani would reply like "He came to challenge you for leadership. But he was not worth your time." Paul would get mad and tell her it wasn't her place to accept the challenge. But Chani's reply would be "If he can't outfight Muad'Dib's woman then how could he defeat Muad'Dib himself. So he wasn't worth your time". It's hilarious and sweet in a way due to Fremen custom. If you defeat a man in Amtal combat you inherit his material goods, his wife and his children. I guess due to time constraints David Lynch(director of the 1984 Dune movie) and Denis Villeneuve left that out. In the book, after Paul defeated Jamis he had to take on the responsibility for Jamis's wife Harah, his son and his step son. Because of Paul's crush and later love for Chani he never exercised his marital privileges with Jami's widow. He let her be his sisters nanny and treated the boys like his wards. So if some Fremen guy had defeated Paul in Amtal, Chani would have become that guy's woman. In the books and the SyFy channel adaptation, it is very clear that Chani does not wish to be anyone's woman but Paul. Hence, she takes out his intertribal challengers herself...just to be sure.😉

Biggest deviation from the book was that the sister is born, but with the mind of an adult bene gesserit. They did this in the 80's Dune and its part of the campy charm of that movie but I think for the tone of this newer take on the series was probably very difficult to get around. Either its a toddler that wont be good at acting on the required level, or a CGI talking baby. This takes us to the next related deviation, she kills the Baron instead of Paul. 4-something year old Alia stabs the Baron with the gom jabbar needle (from the box test). Prior to that, she allows herself to be captured and is taken to meet the Emperor and relays the message from Paul that he is alive and challenges the Emperor to come to Arrakis. (this scene is replaced with simply the metal scroll sent). Having the child instead exist as a character speaking to the mother that bears her was a pretty good choice in my opinion. Part of me wanted this to be like the book, but I was also super nervous about how campy it would have been. There is plenty more left for Alia's story; what we are missing in Dune part 2 is only a fraction of her role moving forward.

And Chani believed and supported Paul throughout the book, they also had a son There’s a time jump of two years where Paul intergrates and works to earn the freeman’s trust, in this time, Paul’s sister Alia is also born with the mind of an adult. By far my favorite movie of the year. Seeing this on Imax is truly a treat that justifies keeping theatres open. If and when it gets rerun at the theatre, do take the chance to go see it! This adaptation has a few changes from the original books, for example, the reveal of the harkonen bloodline is reveal a much earlier, but it's doing an immaculate job of pitching the setting, the characters and the plot. Denis Villeneuve is a *fantastic* director, a pride to my country and province and if you enjoyed the cinematography of this movie, you would enjoy his previous works, like Sicario and Arrival.

The director who wrote the books mentioned in an interview that Chani's character should have been different to the books because he thought Chani’s loyalty to Paul was unresonably.. Paul was written as an anti-hero and in the books no matter what he done, C,hani always stood by anything he said or done no question. The director here heard what the writer had said so changed the character to have a more irl personality to pauls actions.

One way to think of the Kwisatz Haderach is as you say simply as a male Bene Gesserit. In the books Herbert kinda explains that as males have both X and Y chromosomes, the Kwisatz Haderach can see into both his male and female ancestors' pasts. One point I always liked: People are later recalling a conversation between Duncan and someone else where Duncan said that during sparring, Gurney would beat him six times out of ten. Josh Brolin is really too handsome to play Gurney, who was legendary for his ugliness. There's significant deviation from the books. In a way the deviations make the story stronger; and Chani's character is much more fully developed, which is ALL good. Zendaya is electric.

Chani loses everything in the end, Paul, her people, her belief in them. She has only her moral clarity in the end. Herbert was clear that Paul is not a hero. He’s a false prophet using Bene Gesserit skills and the foresight gifted by the breeding program to fool the Fremen into abetting his plan of vengeance and control. Villeneuve changes Chani’s character from a follower to become the moral eyes of the audience to make that clearer.

Paul is the hero and fulfills every prophecy. He really can see the future. He really does bring green paradise. He really does free the Fremen. He brings the evil harkonen reign to an end. @@HanselLeiderhosen His choice of becoming the Emperor is responsible for him killing millions. He says that he only had limited choice is largely due to the fact that the only path he's choosing is the one where he gets his revenge. Paul is a thoughtful and likable person, but he was born on privilege and was raised to rule, he's as much product of the system he was born in as everybody else. To him, regaining his place as Duke Atreides and restoring his family name are non-negotiable. Even if he saw parts of the Golden Path. In the end, Paul is not a "hero". Neither is Leto II. Since the whole point of their visions is to become the ultimate villain to force humanity to grow up. You're taking Paul's visions at face value, assuming that just because Humanity needed to escape Messianic figures, that it meant having Paul sparking a Jihad that killed Billions. That was his Golden Path that Leto II inherited, but I highly doubt that there were not other avenues of progress that didn't involve Paul and the Atraides.

Regarding the Bene Gesserit order's overarching goal, it goes beyond simply seeking power for the sake of power. The order's motto as stated in the books is "We exist only to serve." In the first Dune book as well as the sequels Frank Herbert elaborates a bit on what this means. Basically the Bene Gesserit are dedicated to covertly influencing the politics of the imperium so as to ensure there is a "thread of continuity in human affairs" that will promote "the maturing of humankind". They truly believe their work will benefit the human species by making it stronger and more capable of overcoming any future threat to its continued existence.

I think there are two big huge changes from the books. First Chani, she's the first believer in Paul, she's completely in love and devoted to him. But Villeneuve needed to show casual viewers that this is not a hero's story, it's quite the opposite, in many ways Paul becomes the villain. There is an emperor but he still has to obey the rules of this universe, the other houses have rights and power. Not Paul, he completely subdues them, he exterminates like 100 planets, tenths of billion of people, he becomes a complete dictator... So somebody needed to voice the issues with Paul's journey and Chani was the obvious choice, as long as he reigns her in and returns her to where she is in the books for the 3rd movie. Another one is the timeline of events, it takes years for him to learn and take over the Fremen... so his sisters is born and is around 2-3 by the time of the battle, she's the one that kills the baron, her grandfather. That's a defining moment for the future books.

Kwisatz Haderach: The mind the Bene Gesserit have been breeding. Lisan Al-Gaib: Voice from the outer world. Fremen Messiah concept created by the Bene Gesserit to pave the way for the Kwisatz Haderach. Paul is particularly special, because he is trained as a mentat (brainiacs who calculate things in their head), a Bene Gesserit, and a Fremen, and is sensitive to spice, while still being the duke of a great house. And THEN on top of that, when a man takes the water of life, he receives twice the memories, which is probably why it kills men. While Bene Gesserit women receive the memories of all their mothers, a Bene Gesserit man would receive the memories of both his mothers and his fathers. What's cool to me is in the last movie, with Jamis, he could look to the future and see himself being taught by Jamis and learn from that. But then ultimately that future didn't come to pass when Jamis challenged him. So Paul was able to learn things by looking into a future that didn't even happen. By the way, this is also how the Guild Navigators do their navigation. They are bathed in a constant cloud of spice, and mutated by it. They look to the future to see possible paths. When they see a path that works, they can basically find the coordinates from that future and give them to the pilots in the present. The mechanics of it all is insane. And one thing this movie did for me, more than anything, is show that we can be entering an era where film can finally catch up to weirdness and imagination of mid-century sci-fi. And I hope there's more of this to come.

Book spoiler alert: major change is that in the book, Alia kills the baron, but obvs in the movie Paul does this. There's other changes but then that would spoil Dune: Messiah so I won't say anything else beyond that, but it's truly amazing that Denis implemented changes that makes book reads happy while also having the movie experience significantly improve because of those changes. Thousands of years prior the Bene Gesserit began a genetics program to create the Kwisatz Haderach. Someone who had the ability to foresee potential futures and the actions which lead there. It was a foundation for all their work. Of course like any such group, they leaned into control and power as much as their goal. Over centuries they planted the concept of a chosen one through the various religions across the galaxy. Essentially inserting their genetics project into faiths. One a carefully planned, cause they’re planners, and one a belief.

The Crazy thing about this story is that BOTH of you are correct. Paul is the "one" but also not... In easy terms: The Bene Gesserit expected the "next guy" to be the one (they knew they were close on bloodlines), and they expected to control him to take power over the empire, but Paul used their own religion against them to fill the role (because they killed his father). BUT Also: Paul's son (a movie that prob' won't be made) is the REAL "ONE" and takes humanity in a new direction (positive or negative) after he does something NO ONE has ever tried to do before (becoming all-powerful).

I am SO here for all the Benedict-gism geserims wisdom you two are about to impart to us!! 🤣 So good! You guys are such an adorable and fun couple. Not 12 books, actually over 20. They jump forward and backward in time and only the first six were written by Herbert, a few more by one of his sons, and then random authors after that. These two movies are JUST the first book. I only read the first three books but trust me that it gets SUPER weird by the third book (although still very good fiction). There is also a series coming out on Amazon (???) in a few months that deals exclusively with the history of the Bene Gesserit order. It looks really promising. Great reaction guys! Thanks so much for doing it. @53:12 (Deviation from book question - SPOILERS about first book only) - The films are largely consistent with the book with a couple exceptions towards the conclusion: A) In the book, Paul's sister is birthed prior to the end and is essentially a fully cognizant reverend mother (with all the past memories that entails) walking around in a four year old's body. She actually kills the Baron rather than Paul in the book and is also a very powerful character. If I'm not mistaken it is also her who shouts "SILENCE" at the Bene Gesserit Mother in the voice and is subsequently called "abomination" and not Paul. B) It is much better explained in the books why there are no mechanical computers anymore. In the book an evil AI had taken over and enslaved humanity for a thousand years, thousands of years before the events involving Paul. Computers were outlawed and replaced with human calculators (the guys whose eyes roll back in their head when they calculate - called the "Mentats). If you have ever played the RPG Fallout, the drug "Mentats" which improves mental performance is a nod to Dune. C) Much better explained in the books why everyone is fighting with edged weapons. If a personal shield is struck by a laser it causes an explosion akin to an atomic detonation, destroying shooter and shootee both. They stop all fast moving projectile weapons sending us back to the stone age of hand to hand combat. D) In the book, there was an additional firearm-like weapon through which "the weirding voice" could be channeled like a concussive weapon. If you watch the original 1980s film "Dune" you will see some of these differences. After having seen these two films you would also probably find it pretty amusing too. It would actually probably make a pretty good reaction as I suspect you would both be cracking up like crazy at quite a few points. It is very campy and entertaining in its own way.

I"m not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but keep in mind that Dune is a metaphor for colonialism and the exploitation of oil reserves (spice being a metaphor for oil) by Western powers. Frank Herbert was in the navy and worked as a reporter and a political advisor. His knowledge of the middle east was encyclopedic. Speaking as a Muslim, I must say that reading Dune without an Islamic background is like reading half of the book. Herbert demonstrated a depth and breadth of understanding of Islam and North African/West Asian culture that suggests years of study. The point of Dune is that any occupation, no matter how well-meaning, is to the detriment of the native peoples of the colonized areas, especially if they possess desired resources. And on the side of the colonizers, some may come with good intentions, as Leto and Paul did, but this kind of exploitation can only end in corruption, as Paul becomes the very thing he despised.

46:01, Three important conversations that are missing from this final throne room scene. 1) Thufir Hawat Duke Leto’s Mentat advisor (the older light skinned chubby guy) actually survived the Fall of House Atreides. The Harkonnens captured him and forced him to work for them. In secret despite being brutalized and drugged constantly, once Thufir discovered that Gurney was still alive he made plans to strike back. For almost two years, Thufir was feeding Gurney vital information that allowed his smuggling business to hurt the Harkonnens spice trade. Because, the Harkonnens thought they fully controlled Thufir, they handed him a poison needle with to harm Paul. Instead of betraying Paul, Thufir jabbed himself with the needle. In his final scene, Thufir lives long enough to stand at attention in front of Paul and address him as “My Duke”. It is a bittersweet moment for both of them as Thufir was like a grandfather to Paul. Thufir died happy to see Paul live to avenge his father and reestablish House Atreides. Denis Villanueve did film this final scene but left it on the cutting room floor. 2) After Paul defeats Feyd in single combat, the Emperor Shaddam asks his best friend and personal assassin Count Hasmir Fenring to challenge Paul. Hasmir is the husband of Lady Margot Fenring (the Bene Gesserit who seduced Feyd) and a potential kwisatz Haderach. He is also one of the deadliest people in the Imperium and has some Bene Gesserit training from Margot. Margot also has made him somewhat aware of the Bene Gesserit breeding program and its goals. However, due to a genetic defect he can't father children with his beautiful wife or any woman. When Margot came back from Giedi Prime pregnant he was well aware of what had transpired and why. In all of the years that Hasmir and Shaddam IV had been friends, he had never declined to do some wet work for his friend. However, when Hasmir looked across the throne room to look Paul in the eye something unexpected happened. The two men connected on an almost spiritual level. For a moment Hasmir looked at Paul and saw all of the things he could have been if not for his defect. Paul in turn shared that epiphany and sent back a feeling brotherhood. With this revelation, the Count knew he could never raise a hand to Paul. So Hasmir declined to challenge Paul. His refusal to fight Paul so angered the Emperor, he struck Hasimir in front of everyone. However, because Hasimir truly was the Emperor's friend he told him he would let it go and not retaliate. Denis Villanueve also filmed scenes with Count Fenring but left them out. 3) Paul and Jessica explaining to Chani that the marriage to Princess Irulan is merely political. They let her know that Paul will never spend time with Irulan, show her any passion or sire children with her. The Imperial marriage is all for show. Paul basically marries her then goes home to Chani. They never mistreat the Princess but everyone knows that she is Empress in name only. As Paul would one day tell Princess Irulan in a moment of peak "You know you were picked to play a role. You also know who my real wife is".

I am looking forward to the third movie, which will be named after the second book. It will however be interesting to see how Villeneuve will adapt it. In the books, there is a long timeskip after he becomes emperor where the 1st book (movie 1 + 2) ends. And I think the tone of that book is quite different. It is less broad in scope, and has a lot of intrigue and inner monologue in the source material. So I wonder how it will be adapted, and whether there will be included sequences that were part of the original time skip in the books.

While they are that evil, the Baron and Feyed are both VERY intelligent Rabban is ordered to kill all the fremen, in the movie that's about it, in the book, the Baron understands as well as the bene gesserate that the key to taking control of arrakis is only possible thru an alliance with the fremen Rabban is meant to be hated by the fremen and justly so, the plan is to replace him with Feyed, who will genuinely win them over, at least for a while. Paul was not intended to be the Kwisatz Haderach; he was born a generation too early. The Bene Gesserit breeding plan intended for Jessica to have a daughter, then that daughter would have a male child with Feyd Rautha and that child was supposed to be the Kwisatz Haderach. Therefore Paul wasn't the perfect culmination of the breeding program and was imperfect; his prescient ability wasn't always 100% accurate.

Paul's visions are actually pretty precise after taking the water of life, as certain events in Dune Messiah make clear. However as he explains to others, there are fundamental aspects of prescience that have the effect of rendering his visions imperfect. One issue is that prescience can reveal future circumstances that are "repugnant to the intellect" and therefore he must labor to prevent his conscious mind from rejecting them (and is sometimes unable to do so). Another issue is that cause and effect are not as neatly correlated in the real world as we imagine -- effects arise from a combination of causes and random chance -- and this can cause inconsistencies in his visions that are difficult to understand or interpret. And finally, as individuals gain prescient powers they also gain the ability to veil themselves and their actions from other prescient individuals. So even though Paul's prescience is stronger than anyone else's, it's not powerful enough to completely prevent other "oracles" from hiding some things from him.

Also his visions were often metaphorical and more esoteric rather than literal, such as the one in which Chani stabs him, and Jamis “the friend”

They aren’t looking for anyone specific to be the chosen one. As long as they can control him they don’t care if it’s Feyd or Paul

There is also a 1984 version by David Lynch that is worth watching. It is less cohesive and choppy due to keeping a demanded timeline by the studio. But afterwards I was both confused and intrigued enough to read the book; both are well worth the time.

Funny plot related gag is that both Rebecca Ferguson (Jessica) and Stellan Skarsgaard (Baron Harkonen) are Swedish.

There were several changes made from book to movie but some of the most notable to me anyway were: the age of the emperor. In the book He's some 70 years old but he looks like a man in his mid-thirties because of the Spice. Rabban dies in a different way in the book. The emperor has his head cut off before the baron is summoned to him. The baron is actually killed by Paul's l sister, who is around 4 years old. Several changes were made to Chani's character. She was not an atheist to the prophecy she was in fact a loyal disciple. She never doubted that Paul was the Messiah.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this in other comments but in case they haven't. The year that they give 10,191 should be the year 10,191 AG. The AG stands for After Guild. The reason why that has significance is because it actually takes place some 10,000 years after the standard calendar which is the one we use now. So the year according to the Gregorian calendar, which is the one we use now, would be the year 20,191.

The reason why they do not use Shields in the desert is because of two reasons. 1) it attracts the worms and 2) if there is a Lasgun (the laser weapons you had seen in part 1) fired near a Shield it causes a thermonuclear explosion.

After Paul drinks the Water of Life, he does not become the Kwisatz Haderach. As he puts it in the book, "I am something else, something unexpected..."

In the books Chani is completely supportive of Paul, even when he marries the Princess Irulan. Paul assures Chani he will never show Irulan any affection her give her any children. Jessica then comforts Chani that although they were concubines to the men they love, history will call them the real wives.

Jessica was told to have a daughter with Leto. Instead she had Paul. The Kwisatz Haderach was always expected to be male, wielding the power of the Bene Gesserit where only women had been capable up to that point. So Jessica kind of accelerated things a generation or two faster than was intended. From what I've understood anyway.

Technically in the books the Saurdukar all wore Harkkonen armor to hide their identity but they were still identified by their fighting. The emperor wanted to hide his involvement.

The ceremony of becoming a Reverend Mother, in the books was known to Jessica. The ceremony doesn't just transfer the thoughts of the old Reverend mother but the entire lives of all of the Reverend Mothers that are part of her genetic line. As is conveyed in the movie it's only the female line not the male. A theory of mine is that it's because women only have the one chromosome, but males contain both chromosomes, so that is why I believe Paul after being genetically bred and trained in the Bene Gesserit disciplines is able to survive the test, and be able to see both male and female genetic lines.

The only disappointing thing about part 2 was the ending which was so different than in the original story. Chani actually understands the politics and what marriage means here.

The movie doesn't really go into it but there's more than one reason why Paul has to ride the worm. He has to show that he is an adult. In Freman culture 12 year old children ride the worm for the first time.

In the book Paul's sister is born and actually kills the Barron. Chani and Paul have kids at that time too. Chani was never as resistant to Paul's ambitions in the book, was more supportive.
