"Enemy Mine" was awesome. I had forgotten that one. For an older treatment of the same theme in World War II, there was an old movie entitled "Hell in the Pacific." Two combatants, one American and one Japanese get stranded together on a desert island and go from fierce enemies to begrudging partners to survive and get off the island to friends. Not to spoil it, but that one has a rather bleak and sad ending.

The best years for Sci-Fi in the 1980s were 1984 and 1985! 1980 - Altered States, Battle Beyond the Stars, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Flash Gordon, The Final Countdown, Saturn 3, Superman II. 1981 - Escape From New York, Heavy Metal, The Road Warrior, Outland, Scanners. 1982 - Airplane II: The Sequel, Blade Runner, E.T., Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Swamp Thing, Tron, The Thing, The Secret of N.I.M.H., The Beastmaster, The Dark Crystal, The Entity. 1983 - The Dead Zone, Krull, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Spacehunter, Strange Invaders, Twilight Zone: The Movie, Videodrome, The Man With Two Brains, War Games. 1984 - 2010: The Year We Make Contact, Buckaroo Banzai, Dreamscape, Dune, Firestarter, Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Iceman, The Ice Pirates, The Last Starfighter, Night of the Comet, Nineteen Eighty-Four, The Philadelphia Experiment, Repo Man, Runaway, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Starman, The Terminator, The Toxic Avenger. 1985 - Back to the Future, Brazil, Cocoon, Creature, Day of the Dead, Enemy Mine, Explorers, Lifeforce, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, The Quiet Earth, Real Genius, Re-Animator, The Return of the Living Dead, Trancers, Weird Science, Legend, Ladyhawke. 1986 - Aliens, Critters, Dead End Drive-In, Flight of the Navigator, The Fly, Invaders From Mars, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Transformers: The Movie, The Wraith, Night of the Creeps. 1987 - Amazon Women on the Moon, Cherry 2000, The Hidden, Innerspace, Predator, Robocop, The Running Man, Spaceballs, Steel Dawn, Real Men. 1988 - Alien Nation, Critters 2, Dead Heat, They Live, The Serpent and the Rainbow, Willow. 1989 - The Abyss, Back to the Future Part II, Batman, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Cyborg, Deepstar Six, Ghostbusters II, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Leviathan, The Return of Swamp Thing, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Some of these are more fantasy than sci-fi, but I don't care.

I really wanted to like the sequel but if ppl thought this was slow paced , the sequel was a snail. The movie was amazing to look at just like original was back in the 80s but it was way to damn long and prolly 1 of the reasons it flopped.

@@fordprefect4728 I think Blade Runner 2049 was a worthy successor. It expanded on the "what makes a human" thme by studying K´s psyche as he thought he was born human. Also it broadens the theme to AI. Can synthetics love AI and the other way around?:-) Yeah, slow paced but did you expect a action sequel la Aliens ;-) Beautiful shot, excellent (but second to Vangelis) soundtrack and well written script. OK the move fell 40 million short on it´s rumored 300 million budget (move + marketing) but alss topped the blue ray sales in 2018 (just behind It) with 21 million. Its a slow burner like the original and can still be enjoyed in the home theater.

For me, there are 5 more hidden gems of the 80's 1. Dune 2. Short circuit 3. Short circuit 2 3. Mac and me. 4. Earth girls are easy And 5. Real genius. The last one may not be a technical definition of sci-fi, but the use of the science in the film have yet to be achieved in real life. The level of real world application of the final product is still minute today. But the use of said technology on that kind of scale with the real world components of the time is what i call real intellectual sci-fi. I hope you agree. Plus most of the list including #5 is why i became a tinker and cosplayer.

So glad to see someone finally talking about The Hidden! It was absolutely terrific! Hilarious, unnerving, sexy, creepy, full of action, and also eerie. Kyle MacLachlan said he was trying to convey with his weird acting style what it might be like for an alien to find himself in another person's body/world, unsure how it all worked or how to handle it. And he did that brilliantly! Very existential, as we all do that in our time on earth, don't we? An interesting mirror to our own experience. At one point, if I recall correctly, over dinner he asks the cop who invited him home to dinner and starts to get more and more rattled and borderline pissed off at not understanding him, "Do you love your wife?" and then seems to ponder and consider the answer as if solving some sort of esoteric puzzle. It just freaks out the cop even more! He doesn't know what the hell is going on with this guy! Plenty of fun scenes and twists and bits of humor, both big and obvious and small and sly. Just a great movie with great acting and great action and humor. Really something special!

Another that may have fit your list would be Space Camp (1986). It is cheezy and campy, just like a good 80s Sci-Fi should be. I don't think it deserves the low score it has on IMDB (5.7). And a big thanks for having *Batteries not included on here, I saw it in the theater with my Dad when I was a kid. I remember getting pretty emotional watching it, absolutely a fun film. Repo Man (Emilio Estevez) is a great sci fi 80's film. I think it suffers a bit because if you saw it in a video rental store, the cover doesn't make it look like it's Sci Fi at all. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension is quirky and neat. It's not for everyone. Also, no mention of The Last Starfighter? Who knew you should put Robert Preston into a Sci Fi film? Also it was groundbreaking CG for its time.

1. Predator - everything is true. I'd say even with all appreciation it is still heavily underrated movie. Masterpiece of action and building up true suspense. 2. Back to the Future - Well, mostly true, but Terminator dilogy (sic!) has some valid arguments about best time travelling movie. Anyway this competition is so close that there is no real point in arguing. Both are timeless classic at this point and both are must see for everyone, period. 3. T1 - Speak of the devil, lol. I just write this comment as I watch video. Yes, you can't talk 80's sci-fi movies without mentioning Terminator. Just like you can't talk 80's sci-fi animation without mentioning Akira. You can't overrate their impact on future generations. You just can't. 4. Wrath of Khan - Never was trekkie, so I'll just pass on this. But with all those memes I guess I need to watch it someday. 5. Robocop - Oh my god yes. Great sci-fi and even better social commentary, which is valid up until this very day. Paul Verhoeven at his best. One of the most criminally underrated directors of all time. Yes, all praise considered, still too low. 6. TheThing - Another insanely underrated director showcasing how to pay homage to movies you love with really great remake. This is one of really few remakes I can safely call better than original. And that is not to say that original wasn't damn good. 7. Blade Runner - you may find it boring, but this is another cult classic you just have to see. Too bad it won't live much longer. But then again - who does? 8. Aliens - James Cameron showing how to make proper sequel to cult classic, while making it cult classic again it it's own right. Fun fact: both Ridley and James made it to this list before this point. And rightfully so. -------and now to the reasons why I am subbed to this channel------- 9. The Hideen - no idea, must see. 10. Flight of the Navigator - I remember watching this as a kid. That is it, lol. Gotta refresh my memory to say something certain, except this movie's title became meme of bad piloting for my generation. 11. Innerspace - I have strong deja vu vibes with this one. Must refresh. 12. The Wraith - no idea, must see. 13. Weird Scince - I remember this as moderately fun sitcom, less fun than Alf, but with hot chick and... And that's it. 14. Batteries not included - same as #11. I know I watched it at some point. And that's it. Anyway, keep doing what you do. I can't say that I have found many good movies via your channel (Zardoz, Cherry 2000, Logan's Run and Outland are hard to call "good" in general terms) but those still were good in more than one way if not overall. Yeah, if someone wants to see generally praised movies, he can go to watchmojo video. But HyperDrive is mostly educational.

Great list of movies. Regarding The Terminator: After a friend and I saw it, we had one of "those" discussions (liberally lubricated, of course) in which we discussed the violence in the movie. We could not identify a SINGLE CASE of gratuitous violence. As violent as it was, there was never a scene we thought was there solely for the sake of violence. The relentless nature of the T-800 was solely focused on eliminating his target - if only if he knew who she was. The Terminator is an absolute gem.

If you included The Wraith in this list then Mad Max 2 should have been mentioned, too. Star Wars Episodes 5 & 6, Tron and Ghostbusters are some of the most famous sci-fi flicks but some hidden gems are not usually beloved but are considered classics in their own right like: R.O.T.O.R., Virus (Fukkatsu no hi in Japan), Videodrome, Dreamscape, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, Zapped!, Anna to the Infinite Power, D.A.R.Y.L., The Last Starfighter, My Science Projecct...whew! Too tired to type the other hidden gems as these were too many to mention.

its hard to believe... that the 1980s was about 40 years ago.....! I had grad from High school in 1980. Was done with college in three years, to continue later. Had some early bum jobs, though but had money from an inheritance.. Wanted to watch good sci fi. Had just moved toa new place. Didn't know a lot of people or had few friends. But got involved with a local sci fi club and we had good times watching movies in the theaters and collecting stuff from pop culture.

Anyone recall a film, staring Cheryl ladd, who plays a flight attendant from the future (a very heavy smoker, because the atmosphere in her time is dodgy, so smoking aids her lungs). She and her team are charged with the task of travelling back in time, to known air disasters to swap the passengers, before they die, with dead people from her time, and take the survivors back to the future to help repopulate the human race. The problem is that on one flight, there was a survivor, a young boy. So traumatised was he that he grew up to be a flight investigator, who sort of remembers what happened. But no one believed him. I've asked a few people about this, but have drawn a blank. I don't think I imagined it. So any help....? Thanks.

That is a good microphone, for sure. It is probably better than many radio studios have, so that isn't the problem (unless it is malfunctioning). Still, you DO have an audio problem. I've listened to this video with that same sound card and headphones that I listen to every other video and song-- Komplete Audio 2 and Audeze Mobius. (also, I have listened to you through my JVC computer speakers and it sounds just as muddy). I am not complaining, mind you, I just thought you would like to know. I can still understand your vocals, just fine. They just don't sound very good. So if it isn't your microphone, perhaps it could be in your sound card or, more likely, your mixer... I don't know, perhaps try turning down your gain and lowering the compression, a bit. Usually, videos sound great, to me, but for some reason, yours sounds like you are either overdriving something or you've got a bottleneck in the line, somewhere. P.S. After listening to your other vids, more closely, I have noticed that even the male actors in your film-clips sound a bit muddy. So I suspect the problem is in your post-editing-- too much gain or too much compression, perhaps. You might add a low limit filter or remove any high filter that you have. There is no crispness in your audio...none. Try listening to your YT vid through some normal, non-professional equipment like most of us have. It could be that your pro headset and pro sound system don't have a problem with your video. Most people don't have pro sound cards or phones, though. Again, I like your content; you are easy to understand, and I have subscribed. This is not a complaint. But if it were me, I would want to know.

All choices on this list are well deserved. Innerspace was certainly weird but I liked the comic relief and thought the premise was unique. The Wraith reminded me of Mad Max but the enigmatic, supernatural themes added a layer of creativity to it. Batteries Not Included is great if you like charming family-friendly sci-fi. Never seen The Hidden. Never seen Weird Science. Both sound intriguing though. Back to the Future and The Terminator were both defining when it came to fictional time travel, while Terminator also brought up themes of Artificial Intelligence. Blade Runner's production design and overall visual aesthetic would set the standards for cyberpunk films, while also being a critique on the ethics of biotechnology. Robocop is, again, great with social commentary and perfectly blends the action and cyberpunk genres. Predator and Aliens are both excellent if you like a mix of suspense and action, and the extraterrestrial antagonists are both very menacing and compelling in their own way. The Thing is a classic example of John Carpenter's mastery of suspense, and the film's nihilistic and Lovecraftian elements give the film a tone so dark that you might become paranoid after watching it.
