I picked up Traveller a couple years ago and I absolutely fell in love. I made tons of practice characters, and bought a ton of modules. Last week, I finally managed to get some friends together for a one-shot and they want to make it into a full blown campaign!

Man, I would love to play in this adventure, but I never, ever, played Traveller. I'm 53 now and well outside of playing RPG's, last time had to have been the late eighties. Still love the old fashioned RPG's though, I have Star Frontiers (blue and purple books), Gamma World (all editions), Villain's and Vigilante's (never fail superhero/villain fight trashing a McDonald's), and many more! Heck, I've got a Metamorphosis Alpha book hanging around in a pristine Gamma World box somewhere. Thanks for reminding me of these oldies and still goodies!

@@RPGElite No problem. Hands down your content is the best out there. I feel like so many RPG channels have become click bait channels pushing an agenda. Many of them make me feel like they are trying to sell me a narrative that has become so mainstream while offering zero informative content. Also I feel like the old school RPG market has become over saturated with the same old product. I mean really how many ways can we redesign the same game, put new artwork on it and sell it as innovative? The games you cover were and still are great games that are timeless and the philosophy you share is engaging, thought provoking and most of all unapologetically honest! We need this these days and not just in the RPG community but it many areas of our lives especially in our shared faith regardless of our denominations. ( sorry for the rant🤣) Anyway, YES the links where to get these products is so key because I love following along as you discuss the game! Hey man keep up the awesome work! Peace and love! Oh and there is one channel I do like to follow when it comes to OSR fantasy and that is Questing Beast. If you haven’t seen him you should check him out. He offers some informative insightful content often, though not always. In my opinion.✌🏽

At the end of the game, the 'best', is the one that we love to play the most, the one that our friends and associates have the most fun pursuing. Having started gaming in the 70's, and having owned and played dozens of different systems, I've learned that it boils down to perspective and accessibility. What you say? Ok, here's my example. Classic Traveller is a good game, but I couldn't afford to 'buy yet another system', even today I still can't. Can't keep up with the Joneses, so to speak. I bought Space Opera, which is deeper then Traveller. So, a friend invested in Traveller, GURPS, Boot Hill, etc, which we played frequently, while I invested in Space Opera; D&D, and Star Trek (all the originals). This way we were both able to play more systems then we could afford to buy. Gamma World Space Opera Star Trek Star Wars (the WEG version, and then later the d20 corebooks) AD&D (From the Red Basic to 5th and sundry in-between which would also include Judge's Guild) Middle-earth RPG (MERP) Top Secret (a fav of mine) Twilight 2000 (Yeah, it's still a thing I hear) Battletech/Mechwarrior Vampire the Masquerade Shadowrun Numerous war games from Avalon Hill and others. Most of these games I still own, though I did give a few to my oldest son. If you and your friends had fun playing, and are envisioning playing again, then in all honesty, wasn't 'that game' the best?

We had a standing reservation for a conference room at the rec center on Eglin AFB in the late 80's. Mostly it was Traveller. Still have all the old books, or at least copies of them. EDIT: Oh, I should mention, also got to visit Zocchi's while I was there.

I've been a fan of Traveller since the 80s, and have ran and played it off and on since then. It is hard to find people who want to play because it can be rather different a game than the other fare that's out there. This isn't like D&D, where you make a character, and as you play your character gets marginally more powerful as you progress. Here, it's like you're making a cast-character of a Sci-Fi show, where, by and large, apart from getting new and better gear and ships, your character isn't going to be too marginally better than when you started out. More experienced in certain ways, of course, but not much better. With that in mind, you always have to have a good idea of what kind of campaign you want to play. There are three main campaigns: The Trader, the Scout/Exploration, and the Military. These all speak for themselves, and you can have a bit of mix-and-match of the three. I have a fourth, which I'll get into later, which encompasses aspects of all three. The Trader campaign is the most commonly played, and is generally what Traveller, in any edition, is aimed at. Sure, you can find adventures that is suited for the Military campaign, or the Exploration side, but, by and large, most published material you'll find out there presumes most players are basically freelance traders of some sort. Think Firefly (in fact, rumour has it that Joss Whedon conceived of Firefly from the Traveller games he played in college). If you don't know what kind of game you want to run, have a chat with your players first, so you can get an idea of what you want. The game is so well done that you can make almost anything. You don't even have to have an adventure that has anything at all to do with space. You could easily have the game set in a Wild West kind of setting and the rules work for that, as an example. But this is Traveller, and most people want to play with spaceships and fly around. You can set the game in the OTU at some point in its history. The Mongoose game is set at the near end, "canonically speaking," of the Third Imperium, before the Setting Nuke of The New Era. This setting is huge, so much so that there are plenty of places that haven't been fully fleshed out yet, or partially done, to where you can make up whatever you want. There are plenty of resources out there for new Refs (GMs) to draw from, almost 50 years worth. The OTU is the more popular setting, for one main reason: The characters and culture of the general game are not all that different, apart from the aliens, than people are today; they're just people trying to make a living out there, who like fast food, like pop music, and have lives to live. So, it's easily understood in such a way that players do not have to know anything much about the setting itself to play properly. Whatever is happening to the Imperium vis-a'-vis the Solomani Confederation won't matter to them if they're not near that area; if they're playing, say, in the Trojan Reach, whatever's happening down there isn't going to affect them at all, even if a full-blown war begins (which can take months for news to travel out to the Trojan Reach). A word on aliens. I always start new players playing humans. This is important because the aliens, while understandable, are different enough that if you don't know what you're doing, can cause problems. But if you're going to let someone play an alien, I always recommend either Vargr (humanoid wolf/dogs), or a Bwap (a salamander-humanoid). And I would not let players play a robot until they got their feet wet. Anything else can be a hassle you don't want to have starting out. I highly discourage any player playing the Droyne, which are cool, but to mix them with humans on a human ship poses problems; what kind of weapons can they use, or having a spacesuit for them. They can start with something, of course, but they've been nothing but headaches in all the years I've ran and played the game. You can play the game with just the main Mongoose book, but I highly recommend getting three books: The Main Book, the Traveller Companion, and the Central Supply Catalogue. These are essential. The High Guard book is also essential if you want both more ships and you want to play a Military game. There is a fourth campaign that my players and I love to play: Law Enforcement. As I said, this can draw a lot of elements from the three main campaigns. I've had to write up a lot of in-setting laws and rules of how Star Marshals do their job, which I might one day publish. You get access to combat vessels, weapons and gear, and have a wide variety of adventures to conduct for your players to have fun in, and, most importantly, they get something your average Joe doesn't get: Authority. Let them use and abuse it. It allows me, as the Ref, to make up cool NPCs, especially of the criminal kind. When your players have to deal with a Hiver crime lord, things can get very serious real fast.

One of the core skills for any Traveller Ref is how to properly utilize the Universal World Profiles that are used in many supplements and adventures, as they describe a sector of space in the Third Imperium using a nine-digit hexadecimal code. In many cases, especially in the early life of the game, this was the sum total of information available about these systems. These codes include info about the physical nature of the planets (size, atmosphere, how much water is present) and the social nature of the world (law level, form of government, technology level). This requires several skills that usually you only develop after time running the game and reading science fiction, namely improvisation and its close relative, extrapolation, which is the ability of the GM to fill in the gaps of the codes to make a particular world unique. I do hope you can cover this because its really essential skill for referees.

Nice! Traveller's mechanics are really flexible, and you can run it as light or crunchy as your group prefers. My first campaign in '82 was with my AD&D group, and they started out dashing about the sector just like a D&D party - ship mortgage? Berthing fees? None of that sounded fun to them. Once we're 6-7 sessions in, they're happily scouting the startown for cargo and passengers so they can afford a sensor upgrade, knowing there's a chance that both can cause issues. Characters who died during creation were used as npcs or as the reason for the next character to become a Traveller...

I have a love/hate relationship with Traveller. While I might have grown up with Tolkein, Howard, Vance, and Leiber, I also grew up with the holy trinity of Clarke, Asimov, and Heinlein (and maybe more than a little Andre Norton). I played D&D, but I was waiting for something like Traveller. I already played the miniatures wargame, Starguard! by McEwan Miniatures, loved it, but was hoping for more. Traveller was what I wanted... mostly. In one of my early games, I had a character pull a shotgun on the pilot of a scout and realized that it was impossible to hit at point blank range. The negative modifiers for unfamiliar weapon and armor were too much to overcome. That's when I realized the limitations of a 2D6 system. It only takes a few modifiers to create and auto-success or auto-fail roll. If I could modify it to lessen that effect, I'd probably use a 2D10 roll and make the base roll an 11+ instead of a 7+. Despite what I considered a major flaw in the system, I happily played hour after hour of Traveller and dutifully bought every book or game GDW produced (Mayday, Azhanti High Lightning, and probably others I don't remember). Today though, I have access to a whole host of nice modern sci-fi rpgs. If I were playing today, I'd probably go with something using Fate Core (I can neither confirm nor deny that I have the entire set of Mass Effect Fate Core rules), but I do like the Modiphius and Free League entries into the market. I have played Coriolis and Alien, although, oddly enough, I am having a blast playing co-op Starforged with two other players. It was designed as a solo rpg, but works well with two or three players without needing a gm.

I played classic for many years. Great system. I do prefer the newer character creation, though. Dying outright in creation was cool but we have much more fun with the event tables. I ran a 10 session mini-campaign focised solely on the characters allies and nemesis that they gained during creation. System is about perfect. Havent felt the need to look into any newer versions. Currently running Alien, and if you havent checked it out yet, you definitely should. Game is SAVAGE.

2d6 systems are my favorites when it comes to Scifi RPGs, with plain and simple rules. Classic Traveller in its Traveller Book and Facsimile Edition are great, but I also love Cepheus Engine (regardless if it is EE Deluxe, standard, Light, Faster Than Light or Quantum Starfarer), Zozers take on classic 2d6 or Rogue Space from 2012. My prefererred style of play ist Proto Traveller, so the corebooks, Citizens, Patrons, 1001, Animal Encounters, Scouts, maybe Robots. What's your IMTU btw? I am not a big fan of mercantile or military campaigns, but stuff like Patrol, Safari, Scouts, exploration are my style of play :)

Excited for Traveller :D But sadly I'll not be applying for the game, since I'm on the other side of the planet and me actually having time to play (and be somewhat awake) is probably not going to happen. I'll certainly not further cluster your inbox when the chance of me making it are rather slim :) I've been playing the current Mongoose edition and it might be my favourite system. I don't know details about classic Traveller, but I've heard that Mongooses version should be quite close to it in general. Though I've header that the idea of task chains is something Mongoose added (please correct me if I'm wrong on this) and that might be my favourite idea of the entire system, and I've stqrted using the same concept in my other games as well. The idea is that a player can help out another players task, but they'll have to roll their own skill check for the help (sometimes you make it harder to succeed even if your intentions where good) and that secondary roll doesn't have to be the skill of the "main" task. For example: the sensors operator wants to run scans on the nearby asteroids to find out if there is maybe a hidden base on them (Electronics (sensors) would be the skill), and another player gets the idea that they could use their Electronics (Computer) skill to enhance the sensors for this specific task, so they roll their skill check first and their result translates into a bonus (there is a table that translates their result into a modifier ranging from -3 to +3) for the main roll. This chain of checks could even be longer with a 3rd player assisting the 2nd one, maybe the engineer tries to give more energy to the sensors to improve their range and rolls Engineer (power) for that. This mechanism has really gotten my players to consider how they want to do things and if somebody attempts something important, everyone thinks about how they could possibly assist them and they do get to some great ideas :D

So, I'm surprised that one of the rules of the 'Play Traveller' entry isn't 'you must own a copy of the 1st edition rules. One of the reasons that you stated that Top Secret didn't get a one-shot/mini-campaign was because the 1st ed rules are hard to come by. The 1st edition Traveller rules are still being published, so there shouldn't be any excuse, right? And, I'm surprised you didn't provide a link to where the 1st ed Traveller rules can be purchased.
