One thing I have to say is don't always rush forward just because you have or got higher end equipment. Like when i got my MIDI controller (which happen to be an Arturia Minilab 3) it also came with higher end software like Ableton Live. But when I ended up actually trying to make a full track i gave up and went back to BandLab cause it was easier and didnt have to use as many externals.

Just start with whatever you can, but practicing everyday would really get you far. I promise. Stick with what you're familiar with. starting with an iOS device is solid advice. just be sure to get a dongle that has usb, charge, and headphone out. and make sure the midi controller you choose has lots of reviews or videos showing it hooked up to an iOS device. you’ll want some wired headphones and a power bank for your iOS device for longer use on the go as well. PRO TIP: connect a powered USB hub to your iOS device using the USB, charge, headphone out dongle. this will open up so much hardware for iOS device. It’s truly a game changer. just be sure to pick up a laptop power bank for longer use when on the go.

Me personally, I do see the Arturia minifuse as a good interface, but the M-Audio M-Track Duo is a budget-friendly alternative, for headphones, the Samson SR850 headphones are superb for music, the iPad mini is probably the best device you can use for dedicated music on a budget, mic-wise, a Shure SM57 or SM58 would be great for you if you're doing vocals, instruments, or both
@pkbreeze08 Жыл бұрын
As someone starting out, I was introduced the M-Audio products as they are very budget friendly. I picked up an M-Track Solo Interface (although they have a Duo version for multiple instrument input) as well as a Axiom Air 32 Mini, which has 32 keys, dials and pad bank (only thing missing is an input for a sustain pedal, although it has a toggle switch for this). I presently don't record vocal (too shy about my voice to record it) and record guitar by input rather than mic'd up, but I would look to get a mic next I think. I bought a cheap pair of Roland headphones which I think come with their keyboards. All of this cost me less than £100. I do own a 2019 Intel MacBook Pro, so I take advantage of Garage Band as my DAW, but having seen your recommendation for Band Lab, I might give that a go.

Get the MPK mini plus instead as it has transport controls and a real mod wheel which is critical, and it's only slightly more. The ATH m50x headphones are a studio standard worldwide, I wouldn't say they are that basic, and I'd agree that they really are the right entry point for headphones. You can't fix what you can't hear and they have a pretty good faithful reproduction. They're also specifically a good choice because you can wear them for 8 hours without your ears getting sore. You can skip the Audio interface just by getting a USB mic like the m-Audio one unless you need to record instruments direct in like synths. And even then, for starting out, the line in isn't that bad. I even have tracks where somebody used the onboard mic on a pair of AirPods and with a little audio processing, once it's layered in - you can barely tell. If you have a fancy juicy Mogue synth, sure you want ever curve of that delicious analogue smoosh, but then you're not just starting out so... I'm not so sanguine about the software choice. I haven't had the best experiencing with editing software on a touch surface system personally. That might be the place I plunk down some cash an just get Logic Pro. Being able to effectively manipulate audio and midi really makes a massive difference in your ability to develop a fast smooth workflow which is crucial for an enjoyable experiencing making music. When things get in your way, it starts to degrade the vision you have in your head on how the song should hear, and you start thinking about annoying software instead, and you loose what you have in your mind's eye which can be frustrating.

add a powered usb hub then you can run both your audio interface (adi) and a separate usb mic at the same time. This allows you to maximise the possibilities with a single input adi like the ID4 and similar devices. However, the gain noise will be an issue. If you are just starting out in music and instruments, get a two input adi for more versatility. IF you are ONLY interested in VO then a single input adi is ALL that you need. Don't waste money on extra features you'll never use.

The Minifuse's USB port can only deliver up to 250mA of power (considered low-power USB), which is only half of what a standard USB 2.0 port provides. My Keystep won't work either. Hello. I just bought the same setup as displayed in your video but it seems it is not working with an older Ipad with lightning port? Do you have any tipps how I can make this work or do I need a ipad with usb-c port? or are there any powered adapters or something so I could make this work? maybe you have some advice - thankx for all your videos! great inspiration and very welcome for a beginner like myself.

Do we need speakers? Love the breakdown, I got a final price and am ready to start making some music!

speakers are nice to have, and you'll need them once you start to get more advanced, but you can survive with just headphones if it's a budget issue

Taetro this was great, thanks! I’ve got my digital gear set up now after about 40 years of learning and playing various acoustic instruments. Excited to start bringing the two worlds together!

Great video! Food for thought - a Zoom H-series recorder can function as both a standalone recorder and a class-compliant USB audio interface/mic

All of this sounds cool. I’m a child from the 80s who thought it was amazing to get a 4track cassette recorder. That being said I’m also a 53 year old that lives as a completely immature child who actively is regressing back to the early childhood who will only record music on said cassette 4track. I dismiss technology and make emphasis on learning music and only listening to music pre 1970.

If someone only needs one mic input the IK Multimedia IO would be an all in one solution with any cell phone or computer plus you get free software with it. I agree the Arturia audio interface is also good because of the usb port. Saves you from a usb hub.

Very helpful video. Thank you! I am starting on a project I have been dreaming about for more than 40 years. I am 60. I am a pretty good singer with some experience in choirs and leading singing at church. I have 2 Acapella songs that I have wanted to sing with a group of men but I don’t have the group. So I am going to learn and record all the parts and put together a multi track video. So I have to learn the audio recording and the video recording as well as learning each part. I have an iPhone 11 pro max, I just bought a iPad Pro 11”, and I am updating a 2011 iMac. I have a usb studio mic, and now I have to figure what else I need and how to make this all work. This information is a good start. Any additional help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

For anyone not musical ie cant play instruments , but wants to add their sing voice to some backing music , just go to garage band , for beginners its just easier in my experience to create format a song using all the sounds it offers otherwise yes band lab next etc etc
