It look like the hat was still a bit wet when you blew up the balloon. Does the hat have to be completely dry before you put the balloon and starch on? Or can it be a bit wet still?
@genxthings4 жыл бұрын
Should be damp. That is an error on my part in the video. When that hat stops dripping or is minimal is when you should put a balloon in. That way the hat can still for without starch if you choose, but starch is best. Thanks for watching.
@andrewsusedik89684 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Do you prefer washing it in cold water before sticking the balloon in? Or not using soapy water?
@genxthings4 жыл бұрын
@@andrewsusedik8968 If it is a lighter color hat, it has less chance of bleeding so I try to use warm water, but most of the hats are done in cold water. By the time it finishes drip drying it's usually cold anyway.

Well, as long as it gets big enough to shape the hat and it has to be round. Some balloons look like light bulbs. Don't use those.

@@genxthings Hi. I went shopping for balloons today and couldn't find any "round" ones. Where do you get yours & what size do you like best?

@@genxthings They only have the 12" size at my Dollar Tree. I thought that would be too big, but I guess you don't have to blow them up all the way. My Fred Meyer had some 9" ones so I picked them up. They were $9.99 for 72 of them. (Seems expensive) If these work, then I'll try to find some less expensive ones on-line. Thanks for responding and have a fantastic day!

How would you recommend going about this with a wool, fitted hat? (It’s just a braves hat, however the owner wore it to a playoff game in the 90s)
@genxthings5 жыл бұрын
That is hard to say without seeing the hat. Is the hat from the 90's or older? With wool hats I would not use oxiclean. I would use dreft baby laundry soap. If it has stains, you may need the dreft stain remover. Dreft is a detergent meant to take away baby stains of all types and it is very gentle on the fabric for the babies themselves. Always use cold water on wool. Then rinse in cold water then put the balloon in. Instead of having the balloon come though the snap hole, place right at the edge of the hat in same area.Then you may want to invest in a hat stretcher just in case it tries to shrink. You can find $10-$15 on ebay. I was going to do a more in depth video on the cleaning since I have had a ton of DM's on IG. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

@@Oakleaf700 Vanish is a stain remover which I'd only recommend to use on touch-ups. Not sure what your son's hat looks like, but it kind of sounds like you may have but too much oxi clean. without seeing it, hard to say. I would rinse or soak in a nothing but water bath (COLD Water) every so often agitate it. Then empty the water and do it again. Sometimes if you use too much oxi clean it will stay in the hat. Try that and let me know what happens.

Much easier than the balloon is simply stuff a plastic bag from the grocery store full of other plastic bags.
@papertimemachine38655 жыл бұрын
@@rasnrecycling7956 Yes about 15 to 20 Walmart style bags stuffed in a hat. You can just reuse the bags full of bags after each use. I just think if you are doing 20 or 30 at a time, its much easier than blowing up the balloon. I ran my own vintage hat shop for years and thats how we did it. Even when we stopped using the starch, they still maintained their form when they dried with the bags in them. Other than, that your video pretty much is the same method we used as well.
@genxthings5 жыл бұрын
It may work with bags, but I will guarantee the balloon works better. The bags can leave lumps if not done properly. If the bags start to fall out of the hat so will the hat. The balloon is a tight fit and will not say or fall out. I do 100 hats at a time. With the balloon not only will if work faster, but it will work better. I have done hat restorations for 20+ years. I have used balls, towels, craft paper, hat molds mannequin heads tissue paper etc....the balloon works best. Not to mention, I'd need a ton of bags to shape the hats I do. Different strokes for different folks. Tons of people have praised me for this method. You don't have to use it, it's just showing how I do it. Thank you for commenting and giving people another idea.
@papertimemachine38655 жыл бұрын
@@genxthings We don't do hats anymore, but have done thousands and thousands when we operated our shop. We would buy a case of the bags from Sam's club and just supplement them with ones we got from the grocery store, plus from friends/neighbors. I just can't imagine blowing up 100 balloons at a time when we could fill the hat with bags in 2 or 3 seconds. Your hats look great, my only point was time.
@scann135 жыл бұрын
@@papertimemachine3865 Tried the bags and tried the balloon, Balloon works 1000 times better than bags, and hat keeps a much better shape with balloon. Also it's 1 breath to blow the balloon up so its very quick. You say 2 or 3 seconds to stuff the hat with bags and do it properly.. I call bullshit on that lol balloon is much quicker:)
