I think you mean a rim tap. A rimshot is hitting the snare drum and the rim at the same time for a "cracky" backbeat. Thanks for explaining your church kit!

Ludwig will always be No.1 , I use the Ludwig Blackrolite model , Ludwig brought back there original 18 strand 1963 fine wire snares, that's way their drums have the bright crisp sound. If you like a crisper brighter sound for jazz lighter playing or with brushes use the Remo Diplomat thinner head, but it won't take have hitting, it will dent in the plastic head with hard playing
