cant believe you made me purchase this lens within hours of watching this 😭
@rkdazet Жыл бұрын
Thanks Miguel! I purchased this lens not very long after it's introduction. In large part because I love the 100mm focal length. This is Sony's only 100mm FE mount prime. It fills the gap nicely between 85mm and 135mm. It's extremely sharp and has wonderful bokeh. It is a very specialized lens however -- though not just for portraits. Shooting any object wide open, up close results in very pleasing, smooth background blur. It's not going be the same totally out of focus background that you would get with a faster longer lense like the FE 135mm f1.8 GM. See Miguel's comparison of these two lenses. It is a great 100mm landscape lens stopped down. I recommend trying before buying to see if its right for you because it is expensive and is a very specialized lens.

Thanks for making the video. I never really thought about how this lens does makes senses for portraits and smooth bokeh. The 135mm 1.8 blurs out the background but you are correct you get really think DOF. With this lens you can still get decent bokeh and keep the face fully in focus.....Look forward to your other videos.
@PavelR25 жыл бұрын
DOF depends on focus distance - I can get whole body in focus on 105 @f1.4 and get smoother background because STF have distracting contrast in bokeh as seen also in this video.

As always, nice work man! My favorite portrait lens is the Sony Zeiss 135 f1.8 A-mount on the Alpha 99-II. Perhaps because I’ve shot with it for a few years, but I just find it magical and it produces results that blow me away. Having said that, I’ll have to check out this G Master 100 f2.8. Falls squarely between my 135 and 85 and could be a great add to my kit. Keep rockin, bro!

Agreed with your assessment of this lens, it's definitely on my list of future purchases. In the Miami sun I could use a little less light. Great selection of music at the start of the video, very Cinematic. I just uploaded my first KZbin video going over the new glow box 43 inch from Adorama, and compared to the quality of your video ,I definitely have some clean up to do. Great information!

Due to I am still using the ILCA77M2 (A-mount) my favorite ever lens is the 135mm f/2.8 [T4.5] STF I always wanted to use that kind of lens with the eye AF. So SONY give us the 100mm f2.8 [T5.6] STF. Without any hesitation, when I get the ILCE9, my first E mount lens is going to be this one. I have to mention too that the Zeiss Sonnar T* 35/2 attached permanently to the RX1, RX1R & Rx1RM2 is great to get portraits including the environment. Thanks for your videos.

I'd love to try this lens. Right now, my favorite portrait lens for Sony is the 85mm f/1.8... I also like using a 135mm f/2.8 Meyer Gorlitz - especially with a Kipon focal reducer on an APSC camera which results in an equivalent 135mm f/2.0 lens...

Miguel Quiles I wish people could understand its capabilities, for film work the subject separation you get is effortless. I shoot 90 percent of my outdoor work with this lens which is about 60 percent of my work. 85mm gm for indoors and 24-70gm for tight space hotel room shoots. Soon to invest in the 24mm 1.4. The 100mm makes your work stand out from everyone’s it accentuates your personal style and leaves clients wanting that look. I really can’t speak highly enough about this lens. I’m glad it’s the sleeper lens of the Sony world. It gives me an edge.

You forget the most important aspect of this lens. Its gives you more DOF on the face (so no unfocussed nose tip and back hair line) with the full smooth bokeh in the background, Otherwise we could just shoot with a 135 f/1.8

I understand the main intent was to consider this for the Sony system, but I wonder how it compares to two other lenses: * Sony FE 100mm f2.8 STM GM OSS [release date 2017 Feb] * Fuji XF 56mm f1.2 R APD [release date 2014 Sept] * Nikon AF-DC 135mm f2.0D [release date 1990] The Fuji has an apodization filter, just like the Sony. The Nikon has "defocus control", using the same word but likely different optical technology as you suggested with the Sony.

@jannsander Жыл бұрын
Although I share your enthusiasm for this lens, .25x is far from macro capability. Lenses that can focus on close (in relation to their focal length) objects are far to often considered "Macro lenses". Macro is from 1x onwards. (the FE 90 2.8 for example is a true macro lens)

Am I understanding it right that the light transmission all over the frame is compromised by two stops? Does camera compensate for that difference when reading the exposure? What about the metadata? Thus, this lens is not particularly suitable for shooting in relatively low light, correct? Thank you. By the way, the models are disarmingly delightful.

Been using this on the A7riii. The detail was so sharp I had to edit the model's fake finger nails.(cosplay) I seen thought red contact lenses and saw my clients brown eyes. I'm not a fan of the T5.6 however I enjoy having the f2.8. I never missed a shoot with this lens. I found my 85mm batis at f1.8 would just be a little off at times which made me miss the shot! Over all I'm happy with this lenses. Used it a few times at Anime North last week. Thought I think I would only use this for paid slower shooting. Run and gun I found it to be not the best option. I save run and gun with the 24mm f1.4 GM and the 55mm f1.8.

My 63-cents worth: For me it all started with a 50mm and a 135mm. All was manual focus. All was silver halide (or better). Today I have a 105 macro that does me just fine via digital. Stay focused on what you need... as to say, what works for you. One day it may be 50, yet another day it may be 85. Heck, 200 may have to do it for you one day, but another it may be 35. No one lens will ever be everything.

The Sony 100mm would be my pick every time for any Sony camera body. I'm not a fan of the Sigma line of DSLR lenses (including their 105 1.4) that they adapted to E-mount. Its simply not as accurate or reliable on Sony cameras. Just my two cents 😀✌️
@PavelR25 жыл бұрын
I have Sigma E mount 105/1.4 and 85GM, 135GM and I must say that I like the 105 images the most + 1.4 is 4 Stops faster than 5.6. STF produce much lighter (clipped) highlights in the bokeh and pretty distracting bokeh with grass or tree leaves in the background. (The overall AF performance is the same as 70-200GM and the sharpness over whole frame is better than 135GM or 85GM.)

It would be my favorite, but I just can't justify buying another lens at this cost at this time. I have the 135 STF (A-mount, the predecessor of this lens), the Zeiss Batis 85 F1.8 and the Sony Zeiss 85 F1.4 (A-mount). I hardly ever use the 85 A-mount anymore, just still have it from earlier times, and keep it for the case where I need F1.4, which has not happen yet since I have the Batis :-D And... everything I want to do I *can* do... thats the problem… I just don't *need* the 100 STF, even though it is cumbersome to use the 135 STF, since it is manual focus only. Sometime however I will get it, I am sure ;)

Still not clear- The Lens is officially embossed as 2.8 , but the actual ring doesnt go further f5.6. No other way to reach f2.8 which is strange, and then you give the assuarance for the f5.6 that "it does not matter when the body is A7r III by cranking its ISO". This is kind of contradictory amalgamation between the technical aspects of the lens which are not understood clearly, and, the advancement in the company's technology in their body which allows you to crank up ISO without giving noise. In short- Does the lens give shutter speed related to f2.8, even when it is on f5.6, appart from the body's ISO capabilities?
