Freeze dried food is pretty convenient. My favorite survival food is Indian food. It is amazing what you can do with rice, lentils, beans and spices. All the ingridents last for 30 years. You just need to do a little cooking.

@@Nothandlecraziness any Indian dry goods store for lentils, rice, flour, spices and coconut oil and then find some freeze dried onions, tomatoes, vegetables (spinach cauliflower green peppers etc) and whole milk powder and potatoes. All you need then is a good recipe book

Absolutely! My brother taught me to make a lentil curry thirty years ago. All my actor friends were eating crap and I was cooking up fabulous curries with basmati rice for ten bucks- last a few days. Indian food is the best. Well, real Chinese is pretty damn good too. And Middle Eastern, that’s tasty too!! 😂

Glad to see any other great video . I'm keeping up pace, with your advice , thanks . I have 50 years of cooking and know that this is vital to survive and not waste your supplies . Also learn now how to grow food and keep it . When your food runs out , you can grow delicious food and survive for a long time , now that I am 70 , I won't have to depend upon others , I'm hopefully that people half my age will do the same .

Thank you once again for producing an excellent SHTF food video.....Since I started prepping a very long time ago. I have found that being able to cook is a tall order to ensure a long life ahead during a long term SHTF event/s. What we have put away can be used in so many different recipes that we will take forever to go through them all with what we have in storage while we rotate old to new. Being an "old salt" here can give those newbies the confidence to use these items and learn how to cook too. These products are great for those out there who are young and dumb and have the resources to afford this stuff. Good to know it is out there for me to add to my companies suggested product list after I do my own taste test and video review. Cheers fellow preppers.

For all you know, we are already out there. Now don't forget to wear your mask, stay 3 feet apart, and lock yourself up in your house like a good little unemployed slave. Yes - freeze dried food is the best for long term storage. I bought a large Harvest Right home freeze dryer last December and have been running it almost 24/7. I think a lot of people forget there are "personal Armageddons." For example, in August of 2014, my beloved mum passed away from NonAlcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. In November 2014, my beloved wife took sick after suffering for years disabled from strokes, passing away from pneumonia, COPD, and sepsis. I went into a very dark low place. In April 2017, criminals broke into my house while I was out of town with my son for 2 weeks. They cleaned out EVERYTHING with the precision of a moving company. What they didn't take, they destroyed. Its taken a few years to regroup emotionally, but I have my precious son to care for. A stockpile of good quality, freeze-dried food could really help tide a small family over when things got tough. It doesn't have to be a nuclear war to come in handy. JA

You can make even a plain meal of cooked beans with cooked rice and cooked wheat taste great if you use the right seasonings. If you stock up on some cooking fats (olive oil in small glass bottles with metal caps and coconut oil in small glass jars with metal lids, stored in a cool dark pantry), start saving your bacon drippings (store in a cool location in a metal drippings can with filtering tray), stock up on small bottles of soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, oyster sauce, hot sauce, small containers of granulated garlic, curry powder, dried herbs (rosemary, oregano, bay leaves, comino ...) and get some #10 cans of dried onion flakes, dried sliced celery, dried diced carrots and tomato powder, you can give that plate of beans and grains an Asian flavor, Indian flavor, Cajun flavor, Italian flavor or Mexican flavor. No need to buy expensive pouches of pre-assembled ingredients if you borrow some ethnic cookbooks from your library and practice cooking different styles of food.

I'm going all out here because I really never comment but that skit with your new character; the phone chord + "hallucinations" was seriously GOLD. I had picked up some Backpackers Pantry Pad Thai for a weekend backpacking trip with some friends and can agree it's definitely a 60%... I'll have to peep this stuff you talking about. however I know you're Canadian... but you still gotta get some fresh fruits (seasonally), leafs (cabbage, arugula, kale or whatever) & root tubers (sweet potatoes) into ya man what's up with the garden now?I heard that McDonalds remark man and I'm worried. I'd totally like to invest in a harvest right freeze drier. Reason one, I am a picky eating, so I don't want to get a bunch of freeze dried food that I end up not liking. I know what I like, and I can customize my food. Reason two, you can freeze dry your favorite fast foods. This helps if you're like my uncle, and you got kids that'll only eat Chick-fil-A nuggets. I'd imagine it also be a real moral boost to be sitting in the ruins of civilization and eating something as familiar as a big Mac. Third and final reason you can save (and even GAIN money). Imagine only ever buying the half off food that is about to go bad, and then cooking and preserving it for future use. Plus you can sell it because I garantee others will feel the same things I mentioned earlier.

I just had to note that it is in fact the freezing phase that destroys the food. Slow development of ice crystals causes the crystals to grow larger and due to the slowness of the crystal growth they come out as larger jagged crystals, like a knife, which punctures the cell wall. So when you thaw it out, everything that was inside the cell will leak out. Freeze dryers, the actual machines, are also blast chillers, they freeze things really quickly so the ice crystals that do form are very small and comparatively smooth, so they don't puncture the cell wall.

Do you think they've gotten any better since this review? If so, which specific ones do you recommend I try? Thanks.

If you don't want to wait so long for your freeze dried foods to rehydrate then start rehydrating it earlier, before your hungry. Duh see that way it's done and its ready to eat by the time you get hungry. It's all about planning ahead.
