Matt what a lovely video it's so refreshing to hear your thoughts about the UK and I'm so glad you have a positive experience of our country. I love this country and I'm unashamedly patriotic. It's so nice to hear an independent unbiased view which contrasts the views of some of our politicians who are never happy unless there running the country down.

@@ryancoackley3660 As opposed to what... an antisemitic party? You see how easy it is to play that game? Haven't we all had enough of this sort of divisiveness yet? It's a zero sum game, and we can choose to either keep on playing it and end up circling the political drain, or we can put our differences aside, and move forwards together. @@pyeltd.5457 I think that you should probably recalibrate your detector, as I didn't vote in the referendum. I saw positives and negatives in both sides of the argument. So all that remained was a vote from the heart, and because I felt no great love for either side, I felt I had no choice but to abstain. Having said that, democracy duly ran its course, and one side won. Now if you had pointed a democracy detector at me, then it would read off the scale, hence my earlier comment.

It may not be your thing at all, but Britain has some of the best preserved steam railways in the world - and it is the birth place of railways. I grew up in a railway town and took up engineering (aero-engines) so I love anything that moves and is made of metal. A day out on one can be good fun for kids and grown ups. The Great Central at Loughborough is good but you're close-ish to the Bluebell and the Watercress lines. Visiting during a 'wartime' day can be a hoot.

My parents took me there when I was about 5 and Father Christmas ;¬) brought me a massive train set that year which covered most of the floor in the dining area of our semi detatched house at that time. FFWD quite a few years (in my mid 30's) and I take my wife there. The smell of Jeys' fluid disinfectant in the station and the period colour themes sent me right back to being 5 again. Now in my mid 50's, I am hopefully taking my Godfather there some time soon as the steam engines on Liverpool Loop line (now a cycle path) ran past the end of his back garden when he was a kid. You are very fortunate to live in such a nice part of the country. As for the Shaefer Family, I can highly recommend them a visit there and to watch the film 'The Railway Children' before they go.

It’s kinda similar to people outside the US being upset at the US being commonly referred to as America, as well as people in the US being called Americans. America refers to the entire stretch of land from Argentina to Canada, yet it’s common to see people specifically refer to the US as America.

Lived in the US for four years and heard an occasional comment about “British food”. On each occasion I just asked “Where did you eat?”, only to discover the speaker had never been to the UK. Eating out in the US is generally cheaper than the UK, but the cost of the ingredients are kept down by a heavy reliance on carbs (bread, fries etc). Don’t get me wrong, there are great places to eat in the US as there are in every country, but there is less choice in terms of variety. Having said all that, I do miss Waffle House😆

Awww. Very sweet. I do family history, and I do the DNA bit, and I have loads of DNA matches in America. And, I was thinking about how it is so unusual for the emigration to go in the opposite direction. For instance - I know that if I have a UK DNA match it's really unlikely that they have any traceable ancestry outside the UK. American matches - at some point our common ancestor will be somewhere IN the UK. So I was thinking how, in several generations time, somebody might be on Ancestry DNA and they could have UK matches that HAVE been (for some part of their family history) in the USA. Then I realised, of course, Schaefer is a German name and that non of what I have said makes any sense! :D The future DNA genealogist is going to be very, very confused. Chances are, though, Matthew does HAVE some British ancestors given that he's been American for a while. I wonder where they lived and when, and if, Matthew (and his family) ever stumble across those places anybody will have the feeling that they know the place without actually having been there before. It's quite cool when it happens. I was drawn to, and accidentally ended up living in, a place that features massively in my 'way back' family history and I didn't know about it till after I came here. I had been dreaming about limekilns but I didn't know what they were.

i agree. you are positive and seem to social. that's the problem in the Uk, maybe in the US too, people not being outgoing and making connections. I barely know my neighbours, i must admit that is mostly my fault. if id been more positive like the Schaefer family guy, maybe thing would be, could be different.

You should try and get to the Blackpool Illuminations. It's a lights festival from August to October, ( I think). Blackpool is also an old Victorian seaside resort, it has several piers, arcades, a theme park and Blackpool Tower. A sort of mini Eiffel Tower. People say it is a bit cheesy, but the council has pumped quite a bit of money into it lately and is a great day out if you arrange it round one of the festivals. Check it out!

Our closet friends are a married couple we've know for 30 plus years he's from the UK she's from New Hampshire and they've just spent the last 15 years sailing around the med. There may be an ocean between our countries but our values are much much closer. Merry Christmas to both you and your family. Lee & Christine

I'm glad that you found the people the best thing, when I'm out and about in my home city of Liverpool I always make a point of helping anyone holding a street map with a puzzled expression. I have to say that while working in America I had a similar experience with the people. My favorite example is Thanks Giving, during the week before Thanks Giving everyone from the project manager to the janitor invited me to their homes for the day, I had so many offers that I couldn't choose so they held a raffle with me as the prize, they did the same again for Christmas day.

I agree with E. Mids. I spent a lot of time living between Nottingham and Derby, although I consider Derby more of a home because it's where I worked, at Rolls-Royce. It's noteworthy that when Bonnie Prince Charlie invaded England in 1745, he got as far as Derby and decided to turn back and Herman Göring completely missed the chance to blitz one of the most significant industrial targets in the UK in 1940. I would say that the East Midlands is an area of England that very few from outside the region know very much about other than Robin Hood but, in common with a lot of the country, the history of the modern world has been turned there more than once.

0:55 This is an encouraging sign ~ stopped the video to comment and it's not been a minute yet. Thank you for mentioning the green. I had a french pen friend who came to stay when we were 16. Some little time ago now, I remember two things about it. This Colonel's son was a (psychotic) dab hand at the stupid stunt of firing lit matches across my bedroom aiming for the waste paper basket. Or me. More pertinently was his totally unforced uncool exclamation in the car from Heathrow Wow it's SO green. England is so green. Sort of thing that sticks with you throughout life, especially because it's one of those superlatively simple truths that we natives don't notice until we are forced to. Thank you also for not following it up with the tiresomely crass "because it rains a lot."

It’s great that you’re enjoying your time here because moving here to live rather than just visiting is a huge experience. You mentioned that you’ll be doing videos of travels to different parts of the UK; you could do a whole video of just the Cotswolds ( including Oxford) because although it’s a relatively small area there’s SO many beautiful villages and countryside to see including Stratford Upon Avon to the North. Maybe you could do a video explaining why you moved here and your new jobs here too.

Hi there, you must have noticed that religion is way less important and influential in the UK. Hardly anyone goes to church etc. Do you feel like you are surrounded by godless heathens? If so, how does that feel? I have visited the US several times and I felt like I was visiting a theocratic state (esp. In Texas) except for NY city which felt much more European.

I'm English and I think the standard of our food is not good - there are exceptions, but generally it's not great. It annoys me that even standard English and British food items, not fancy dishes, are often not as good as they can be when made properly (like by my mother!). I'm glad you haven't found our food too unpalatable, because I honestly find it embarrassing.
