Being a delivery driver can be great, but before you really invest a lot into it, there's something you should know. Today Pete's going to break up advice every courier driver should hear before starting out. You need the right van before you succeed with courier delivery.

The truth of the matter is, it depends on which way you want to go. Do you want to go the multi-drop route or do you want to go the haulage route? If you're going the haulage route, you want to get the biggest vehicle you can.
If you're thinking about getting in, get yourself a Luton with a box, with a tail lift. Or if you can, they're not easy to come by, a Luton curtainside tail lift. And then you're going to be looking to do two or three jobs a day. Drop, next drop, drop, next drop. Maybe on the night before for the morning, that kind of thing.
You don't have to go for the Luton. Some people don't. Some people prefer to go for the long-wheelbase or the extra-long wheelbase or even a small van. Haulage can be done in small vans. You're pottering around from here to there, but you're going to get less for every load. They're going to pay you less money to move one box than they are to move 100 boxes because it stands to reason.
But that's if you want to go down the haulage route. Alternatively, you might want to go down the multi-drop route. Now, if you're going to go down the multi-drop route, you don't really want a big motor, because if you're going to be doing 200, 250 drops a day, you don't want to be trying to get around windy streets with cars parked on either side. You're going to have to be stopping everywhere.
You want a tidy little motor. So you're really going to be looking for something from a small van, medium wheelbase, maybe. You can even do it in a car, in fairness, up to maybe a long wheelbase. You've got your side door then, you've got those so you can actually pull up, open the side door straight out, have it in the back door, that kind of thing.
If you are going to do the multi-drop, get yourself a decent multi-drop app. The Circuit one's very good. That's actually got a little feature, where it's called Package Finder, where it'll find the package in the van. And it's also got another feature, whereas if you want to only pull up on the left-hand side where your side door is, it'll always put you outside the house.
But the other advantage with doing it the multi-drop way is the fact it's easy to get into, if you haven't entered the game before it's a good way to learn. And also, if you want to use the van not just for a van, say, for example, you want to use it as a van, but you also want to use it at weekends to take the kids to football, or you want to go down the cinema.
If you get yourself a medium wheelbase with a regular-sized roof, it'll still go into car parks, you can still park it on a driveway, you still don't upset the neighbours. Try and park that on the driveway, my neighbour's going to get the hump.
So it really depends on which way you want to go. If you want to go to haulage way, I recommend you get yourself a bigger van. Bigger the better. Worry about the lorries later, get the van thing under your belt first. If you want to go down the multi-drop route, then a tidy little van, even a car, going up to a long wheelbase van, so that you can get in and out of the parking spaces easier.
You can park easier, you can get the parcels off quicker because time is money. That's why you want your route minimised, quick as possible. Like I say, get yourself Circuit, it'll get you there quicker. But you get yourself a little van or a normal van, get the route done quickly, get the hang of it, and then progress.
And also, you've got to bear in mind, whichever vehicle you go for, and I always say buy the vehicle and don't go too mad. Because if you buy it and then you realise you bought the wrong one, you can change it. If you go and get yourself an expensive lease or something like that, you're tied in for four years. It's not so clever.
So buy it and try it, and then see how you go. And if you don't like it, you can always swap it, you can sell it, move on to the next one.

Hi Pete , it’s my understanding that law is going to change regards 3.5 t vans for tacho , Will my Luton need six week maintaince check , The same as HGV . The information I been told is new vehicle by2024 Then older one following year .
