It kinda makes me wonder what the internal mechanism for tourettes is like and if there are similar mechanisms in play for neurotypicals. I don't have tics, obviously but when i get really tired or disocciative this is very much how i manage to talk. im very bad at actually saying what im thinking, and my mind will be in its own world while my mouth spouts nonsense. i once had a very sudden urge to say something, anything, to a friend when i was very sleepy, and i ended up saying i was going to liquify the soles of his shoes and inject them if i stop to calm down or think about it, i can control it and get my thoughts back on track, but oftentimes its too much work and i just sit on autopilot bc ppl find it funny, and i end up finding a lot of the weird shit i end up saying funny too. a lot of the human mind is son a spectrurm and it makes me wonder if tourettes is similar to a muscle spasm of a neurological type, where its a common connection or conventional thought pattern that is involuntarily triggererd.

​@@kaestral I'd guess it is, as you say, a "muscle spasm" of the brain, but it's because it wasn't blocked, not because it was generated. All of us, to compose our reality, have to iterate and associate just the same, most of it's just filtered out. It seems to be a dysregulation of filtering in cortico-striatal-thalamic-cortical loop. Loosely speaking, the thalamus acts as a high level multimodal filter and compositing hub of functional systems. A smart multiplexer per se, that seems to be directly correlated to your conscious state. (mode networks) The basal ganglia deal with motor, emotional and executive control, part of planning and reward. I'm just making vague statements so you can keyword, but these paper comes to mind: "Selective Dopamine Filter of Glutamate Striatal Afferents", "The Substantia Nigra Conveys Target-Dependent Excitatory and Inhibitory Outputs from the Basal Ganglia to the Thalamus", "Prefrontal Cortex Regulates Sensory Filtering through a Basal Ganglia-to-Thalamus Pathway". Any number of papers if you look up "Thalamic Gating" will be contextually relevant. Keep in mind none of these systems ever work in vitro nor does it always make sense to try to characterize the function of one without the other. The whole is more than the sum of its parts, in the dynamics of interaction the brain does so much processing. What we do in computers, is naive, to have storage and processing? The brain never wastes any of itself on something so rudimentary as just one thing. Heh, studying neural pathways is also somewhat never-ending, it just keeps leading you down an ever broadening tree and then you find recurrent loops.. Consider her alphabet video, how she said her expectations(planning) made her tic the most, and how attentional focus, like her telling a serious story can affect it. Those at least confirm to me that the mechanisms lie among the circuitry I bring up. I have a hunch tourette's would be more glutaminergic than dopaminergic in contrasting with parkinson's or schizotypy. I read a paper on the enlargement of the thalamus in tourette's patients, but my intuition would be that it's a symptom and not a cause. If the thalamus was wholly disrupted in operation we'd see a much more psychotic behavior than a normal person with some uncontrollable actions. Perhaps the enlargement is the thalamus trying to compensate for the lack of the expected filtering by doing extra preprocessing itself.
