Opera2 was the second performance of The Singer competition in 2017 in China. The song is in Russian. A language he also speaks fluently. The original was from the famous Russian singer named Vitas. The song is very famous and popular in China. The audience already knew what to expect, but were very surprised when Dimash raised the pitch three times. Vitas but only once. The man who raises his fist in the air at the end is Dimash’s father. He came from Kazakhstan to support his son. However, Dimash knew nothing about it when he performed. I think it was very difficult for him at the beginning. You have to imagine, until this competition in China in 2017 he never was alone. Dimash, like many other Kazakhs, has the tradition of living under one roof with the whole family all together. He lives with his grandparents, parents, a sister, a brother an other relatives in the same house. And now he had to go to China alone, didn‘t know the country, didn‘t know the language, didn‘t know the traditions or livestyle in this country and up to that point he spoke (almost) no English, except maybe „Thank you“ and „My name is Dimash“. Only one interpreter came along and that at the age of 22. He was almost a kid to me then (my son is 20 so I can imagine…). And after that performance he saw his dad. So beautiful and emotional. BTW the audience is also the jury. During the Opera 2 performance, he flirted with the audience in a way that wasn’t really his habit at the time (fortunately that has changed in the meantime). And afterwards he said that he was really uncomfortable that his father saw him like that🤭. Luckily he didn’t find out until afterwards because I love it when he’s like that on stage🥰. I love this video because he still seemed so innocent. Just a boy and he didn't seem as serious as he sometimes is these days. He still looked carefree. The man who often is playing the kobys in Dimash’s performance is the best on this instrument and a good friend of Dimash. His name is Olzhas Qurmanbek. Stranger is another masterpiece Igor Krutoy wrote especially for Dimash's vocal skills. Or another masterpiece written by Igor Krutoy at the request of Dimash. He performed this song on the same show as Stranger. If you know any of the many versions of this song, this is not the same. But definitely a must if you want to hear an angel sing. I love this performance SO much because there's a lot behind it! This was his second performance on "Singer" season 5, the Chinese television competition that put him on the map! As the youngest competitor in the history of the show, only the second non-Chinese contestant in the show's history, and the only competitor that was a virtual unknown to the audience at the time he just absolutely blew the socks off of everyone from the word "go"! Two things I love about this: 1. His father can be seen hiding in the audience. This was Dimash's first time being in a foreign country on his own for any extended time and he was feeling homesick and was concerned about not being received well by the foreign audience. His father, Kenat, came to support him but didn't want to add any pressure on him in the competition so stayed out of sight until the end of the song. In the extended versions of this you can see the moment when he spots his dad in the audience and does a double take. The exchange between them after that is so touching and really shows their incredible bond and how humble and sincere Dimash is as a performer. 2. The original song is by famous Russian singer Vitas. When the song first came out it was wildly popular, winning 114 awards in Russia, so many people in this audience were familiar with it and prepared for some stunning vocal acrobatics. Vitas performs only one key change in the song so it was absolute insanity when Dimash did THREE! Imagine being Vitas and seeing this performance; your award-winning song outdone SO WELL! Yeah... Vitas was so upset that he banned Dimash from ever performing it again!

You can get a version with subtitles. Vitas wrote it; it’s about a lonely house in the woods and the storms, bad weather, howling winds are coming after him. The vocal upsweeps are mimicking the howling winds trying to get in.

This is a gimmicky song. The lyrics don't matter except to set you up for his soprano gymnastics. He starts complaining about the strong wind, slamming his door shut behind him, howling at the windows, and then Dimash becomes the wind. Since the show gives you Chinese and the language sung, they didn't bother with extra subtitles, but a week or two after the Chinese shows air, someone adds English subtitles. If you add "Eng subs" to the search box with Dimash + song lyrics, you can usually find it. You start to recognize audience members because they were the judges for the contest.
