So I went ahead and bought 12ft poles at home depot for around $28, and an end cap to prevent water from getting in. Then dug a 2.5 ft hole and cemented the poles in. It was hard work, took me a good 2hrs of pure manual labor, but it was worth it.

Im looking for 4 poles to hang lights that are strong enough fro cable install. May I ask what type of poles did you get? Im also looking to 12ft and cement them in ground. Was thinking of going 4x4 route but not sure I wanted something that big. One more question do you think the poles are pretty much a lightning rod? Thanks

@@LovingAtlanta I went to a store called Popshelf and bought 4 large tin containers. Very cute, I might add. I was going to pour ready mix concrete in it, with a piece of plywood in the middle, all the same height and add the string lights. I was going to stain the plywood, put rocks on top of the concrete, and dirt on top of the rocks so I could plant flowers. I was discouraged when I watch the video to add the cable wiring, hooks, and screws. I just thought it would be easier.

Well thank you guys for sharing your talents and tips for putting up these lights. I can’t express adequately how grateful I am to see a step by step of hanging these so I can add some lighting to my tiny backyard garden and have it look so much nicer than a tangle of plugs, cords and staples. It was also very heartwarming to have two gentlemen from my home state instructing. All of my family still lives in the DFW area and you guys made me feel like I was visiting home for a few minutes.

A good rule of thumb for setting poles is to bury them 10 percent of the pole length plus 2 feet in soft soils, and 10 percent of the pole length plus 1 foot in hard and rocky soils. This is how set depth is determined for utility poles.

After you attach it you could use a pair of vice grips and grab the dead horse. Loosen the clamps until the cable can slide freely, and use the eye screw as a pulley to pull the slack out of the full length. Hope that makes sense - seems like that would be easier with two people up there somehow so one person can hold the vice grips while the other guy loosens the clamp.

I bought the Yardistry pavillion and the Adjust-A-Gate gate kit, then the string lights, now I just want to put them up without spoiling the whole professional look. The vinyl coated cable should do the trick. :-)

One thing I learned before hanging my patio lights is that a one-size-fits-all approach will lead to disappointment. Each video I watched had a different approach. The approach I went with was completely different approach from this one as it utilized removavle vertical pipes (5' or 6' long 1" diameter galvanized pipes or conduit that can easily slide in & out of 18" long 1-1/4" PVC pipes that are mounted in the earth with concrete at various locations throughout my yard/patio). These galvanized pipes/conduit with with hooks attached on the top "for the light strings to hang from" are easily removable from the PVC pipes for storage during the Winter months or if I want to change my light pattern in my yard, that too is easily accomplished since the pipes/conduit easily come out of the PVC pipe sections. Just my two cents.
@mrbill9646
@mrbill9646 Жыл бұрын
Care to share photos- I was considering something like that- utilizing powder coated slotted tubing that would slide into a cement “ pipe or holder” to allow for easier removal as required.

@TrippM100
@TrippM100 4 жыл бұрын
Non-coated could rust and fray over time. Which in turn could 1. Splinter someone with any future handling or 2. slice and/or cut into the light strand cord. The vinyl coated just holds up much better over time and (perhaps more importantly) offers safer handling.
